The television I plan on getting is the Sharp D92 (I know about the banding I'll be trying the set before I buy it :) The macro blocking is what is moving me away from the 981. So I guess what I really want to know is there a significant difference on the upconversion between the two. I'd also appreciate any other advice on the issue.

Thanks

Macroblocking is rare on LCDs. Have people been reporting it on the Sharp?

I would try the 981 first. If you don't like it Oppo has a 30-day return and will exchange it for a 970 plus refund.

Seems certain displays cannot accept 1080p, despite having no problems with 720p or 1080i.

I didn't read anything about it, I was just assuming that it probably would since it uses the Faroudja chip. Anyway, there is a review of the it on hdtvexpert (can't post URLs yet) and they used the the D62 as a display (if anyone else is curious about the same combination) and no mention of macroblocking. So it looks like the 981 will work out fine.

It seems the majority of the people reporting the macroblocking issue are owners of Panasonic TV's.

Well, Panasonic is big in plasmas and most macroblocking reports come from plasma and DLP owners. Sometimes from rear projections CRTs. Much less often on LCDs.

Another thing to consider... If you ever get a video processor then you need to go with the 970 since the 981 does not do 480i over hdmi. I have a VP50 and was about to but 2 981s until oppo tech support said it was a hardware limitation due to the Farouda chip. Now I am looking for another brand since I don't care for the 970.
