View Full Version : How to run a CD player through a Mixer

I recently bought a Peavey PV6 mixer for a small PA system setup. I want to run the CD player through one of the 6 mixer channels to have the individual controls but the only way I see to run the CD through is with the standard 1/8 L/R inputs offered on the back of the Mixer. This then only lets me use master volume control for the CD. Is there some type of adapter that will let me run the CD into one of the channels of the Mixer?
thanks

You need a direct box. Whirlwind makes one for just what you need that has 1/8 in and RCA in going to XLR for the mixing desk.

Yes, it looks like channels 5 or 7 on your mixer have RCA inputs. You just need a cable like this:

Or a standard, stereo RCA cable if your CD player has RCA outputs.

Given that the PV6 doesn't have channel 7, I don't know what Rupert is answering :-)

However, looking at the PV6 image (http://cachepe.zzounds.com/media/quality,85/brand,zzounds/PV6_catalog_shot-f0941487fa73fb4e2e5895d1a46f1aa8.jpg) on zzsounds, both channel pair 3/4 and channel pair 5/6 has line level inputs. Those look like mono quarter-inch plugs (although they could also be balanced TRS quarter-inch -- mono unbalanced plugs will still work in such inputs).

So, pick a channel pair (3/4 or 5/6), and then get a cable that goes from whatever your CD player outputs (stereo RCA, or 1/8 inch stereo) to quarter-inch mono plugs, and plug into the "line" level inputs on the picked channel pair. Hosa typically has cheap (<$20) cables that do the job; you should be able to find them at your local music store, or online.

It _may_ be that the "line" level signals want +4 dBV, and your CD player outputs -10 dBV, which may lead to a "weak signal" -- in that case, you want something like the EbTech LLS-2 (line level shifter) in between. It's something slightly different than a Direct Box -- a DB is usually used to go into a Mic input instead of a line-level input (and you often need two to get stereo).

Whoops. Looks like I was looking at an incorrect picture of a PV8! :)

Musician's Friend needs to fix their website. (Click on "Zoom")

My friend, Rupert was answering it correctly. PV6 DOES have RCA Out and In jacks at the back of the unit (http://cachepe.zzounds.com/media/quality,85/brand,zzounds/PV6_back_panel-8dbe29b080ec6290aafb531378aee931.jpg)

Life is easy (with RCA jacks, that is!).

Skywalker,

The problem with the RCA ins, as SStilwell already claimed in his original question, is that those only give him master volume. S actually wants "to have the individual controls" which means going through a regular channel strip. Thus, he needs a CD-to-channel cable, which likely is a RCA-to-mono-1/4-inch pair (assuming his CD has RCA out).

I think it's a little confusing in that S talked about 1/8 inch ins -- he might have meant RCA ins in the original question.
