A woman licking here way up (or down) your belly should give you chills. If a fade to black does it, it may be time to re-evaluate your life.

Well I just got another brand new M8500 Green tube delivered yesterday from VDC so the Sky in my neighborhood definitely isn't falling. :) I also got an e-mail from a guy who got his first 8500 a few weeks ago. He just added a Lumagen scaler, hooked up a dozen or so sources to it, and is totally pleased with the fact that he can pick a resolution which makes each one looks it's best. From 720P, 840P, 1080i, etc. Oh , most importantly it can do from 12FL down to real Inky blacks for 10,000 hours with no bulb replacement.

Ok, I just got an email from Tim directing me here, and it was me he was quoting... If you deny that you take pleasure in the insane blackness your PJ throws, I guess you're just not looking at the same image I am... Well, maybe I exaggerated about getting chills, but I am still very impressed regardless. Long live the CRT! The fat lady already sang...and left the building. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a romantic night on the town in a horse and buggy. But when one insists said buggy is superior in performance to a BMW, a trip to the mental doctor might be in order.

At least HDTVFanatic just had some fun and made something up.

I believe only the mentally challenged would be unable to see the above quote was tongue in cheek. But wait a minute - I posted that it was tongue in cheek a few posts later and I know you read that. You see, what you and Churfuf fail to get which Clarence and Phil and Energeezer and others DO get is that my posts are usually mocking the attitudes of those like you, who are convinced that only those who you who belong to the church of CRT know what good video is.

I've said it about 100 times but I'll say it again. All that matters is what makes someone happy. In the world of projection *IMO* there >currently< is no best. CRT, DLP and LCOS each have their strengths and depending on ones priorities (absolute black verses detail for instance) one might prefer one to the other.

and i see once again poor Q is being unfairly maligned,
he has said more than once that the best hd system
he has ever seen were vertical stacked runco DTV 1200
projectors. of course he has also referred to crt projectors as buggy whips and i believe though
i may be wrong dinosaurs, but what he has said in jest
is true in fact. as far as the home theater market is
concerned a crt projector know matter how good the
picture is how well built it is or how long it will
last is a very costly buggy whip
that can not compeat with the price of smaller digital
projectors or rebuilt high end crt projectors being
sold buy resalers . it`s the same with my 12 foot c band system it may show a better picture but i do not belive that dish network and dtv is loseing any sleep
because of this,at least the makers of digital projectors are making improvements
each year :)
and it really does not matter what you buy all it is ,is a
BIG TV

PS

NOT WHEN I AM WATCHING TV AND I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO POST

You were responding to QQQ. The fact is, he is not looking at the same image as you. Unfortunately, QQQ is not blessed with the taste nor the sense to have a CRT projector. Thus, he is looking at a crappy artifact ridden image that only does black twice per year (when the bulb blows).

So, since he clearly does not understand the value of black, you cannot expect him to share a videophile's delight at well executed projection.

Explaining what contrast is in technical terms doesn't mean much to a non-videophile but if you show them a picture like this it helps them to understand pretty quickly.

100k:1 is one insane CR, but who knows how black that can really go. the brightside pic on the right seems to have a decent black, but as good as CRT? probably not. Certainly brighter, but at $50k for a 37" set, i'll be happy with my 9500 for a good long while.

I suspect we'll see devices with different brightness levels. There's no reason to believe these will be light canons. In fact if it's LED based that's one of the challenged with regard to FP.

The relevance of Dolby purchasing Brightside is obviously that the technology will be incorporated into main stream products. As economies of scale increase it will no more needs to cost 50K than a line multiplier any longer needs to cost 25K. Samsung has LCD TV's coming to market in a few months that incorporate whatever is shown in those pictures and the pricing is in line with comparable TV's (I think they are LCD based, not 100% positive).

I suspect we'll see devices with different brightness levels. There's no reason to believe these will be light canons. In fact if it's LED based that's one of the challenged with regard to FP.

In my light controlled theater, when it fades to black, it's totally black. In order to increase the CR from 35k to 100k, you're going to have to significantly increase the light output. I also think that it's possible to have a 100k CR without having total black if the image is bright enough. hey, it's possible it does totally black out and have an image nothing else can compare to, i'm just a skeptic until i see it for myself. I actually hope there is a technology that is superior to CRT as it's not going to last forever, but i have yet to see one that accomidates all my current viewing needs.

The relevance of Dolby purchasing Brightside is obviously that the technology will be incorporated into main stream products. As economies of scale increase it will no more needs to cost 50K than a line multiplier any longer needs to cost 25K. Obviously the price will come down, but it's going to be quite some time before you can get a monster display with that technology at an affordable price. We'll have to wait and watch how it develops.

OLED is great, but I haven't seen a 10ft wide panel yet.
QQQ of course you could have 100,000:1 contrast ration and still have raised blacks, it just means a far brighter top end.

The brightside displays can do true black though as they have an active LED backlight so you can set video black to be LEDs OFF, so you can get a real black out of those.

The Brightside display I saw demod crapped all over CRT, DLP, LCOS you name it, the picture makes everything you look at later seem lackluster and disappointing. I strongly recommend no-one looks at the brightside displays, you will never be happy again.
