View Full Version : Oppo 970 & Panny XR57 - how to apply bass management?

I seem to repeatedly buy products which are somehow the only incompatible models of their respective classes. For e.g. the monoprice switcher & the Oppo 970 and now the Oppo & the Panasonic SA-XR57.

To cut the story short - I bought this receiver yesterday as a cheap solution to multi-channel audio over HDMI. I tried Norah Jones SACD & a Chesky DVD-A sampler yesterday & there was nothing coming from the subwoofer. I played around with the subwoofer settings on the XR57 but it didn't make a difference. I tried 'Raw' & 'PCM' settings in the Oppo too. How do I apply the BM adjustment for this oddball dvd player-receiver combo?

I searched and found dozens of threads on the Oppo but all of them talk about BM with receivers capable of doing so. Also, I am using only HDMI for all audio - DD5.1, DTS, LPCM. Do Oppo settings have to be changed everytime?

Thanks

SACD over 5.1 analog. Should work very well.

David,

The main reason I bought the XR57 is to simplify connections with HDMI. And to take advantage of the Oppo features. I tried 5.1 analog from the Oppo to my old Yamaha RX496 & it had the same issue with (lack of) bass.

I've had 5.1 analog hooked up to my XR-55 and it dosen't lack bass. I've used an SPL meter to verify my settings. If you've got the Oppo hooked up to the Panny with 5.1 analog and you've got issues with bass, then it's time to start looking for the problem. It's not the Oppo or the Panny. Do you have an SPL meter?
You aren't going to get SACD or DVD-A over HDMI with this equipment. It's specifically designed to use analog connections. Don't know what led you to believe otherwise.

David,

There are numerous threads about the Oppo & one really long one on the XR57. It is well known that the Oppo 970 can output all audio (SACD/DVD-A/DD/DTS) over HDMI. It is also a fact that the XR57 can accept & process multi-channel PCM streams over HDMI.
I have the following media - Norah Jones (SACD), Chesky surround sampler(DVD-A/DTS), Eagles HFO (DTS) and Gladiator (DTS-ES).

I could play all of these cd/dvd's audio over one hdmi connection. The only issue was with SACD & DVD-A, there was no bass being transmitted. Bass management needs to be done either at source(Oppo) or receiver(Panny). But since Panny lacks this feature on multi-channel audio, I need the right settings for the Oppo.

Search for the terms "SACD" & "HDMI" in the Oppo 970 faq & you'll see what I am talking about.
