Run! Don't walk to pick this up! This is the most incredible sounding disc available to date. I am literally having aural orgasms while listening to the TrueHD track. For those who are concerned about video quality, I can tell you it looks absolutely great. And unlike ATCHB, the editing is not "a million MTV cuts of inconsistant picture." The cutting is more smooth and natural. It feels exactly like it did in the pit, night after night.

For $17 at BB, you can't go wrong.

Just picked up the NIN @ BB ...

I'm running my PS3 audio thru fiber optic but decided to try the true hd audio feature...

While the std 5:1 sounds great I can still tell the difference running it thru true hd even without an HDMI connect...much better sounding...

I have an older Pioneer Elite VSX-41 and was considering goin the HDMI switch box route or just buyin a new receiver but decided to wait until more HDMI 1.3 receivers hit the market...any reccomendations for a replacement receiver are appreciated to...say in the $1k range...

What would be the explanation for the better sound with just a std connect..just curious...

Well TrueHD on BD has more bitrate than the HD-DVD; so that could be why.

I thought the VC-1 encoding has a slightly higher bitrate on BR.. So it has an "edge" with this and the instant video angle thing.

The tracks are 24/48 on both the HD DVD and BD versions. The DTHD tracks should sound identical. The BD version's video bitrate is slightly higher, but the difference is nearly imperceptible, according to the NIN website.

While that is true, look at the specs for DD TrueHD. TrueHD only Blu-Ray has a higher max bitrate than HD-DVD does. That's why I'm sure it sounds better.

Kris Deering
03-02-07, 08:38 AM
The TrueHD tracks are identical and from the same mix. Lossless is lossless. The only differences you may be hearing are upsampling or the way the signal is being handled in either the player or AVR. Bitrate has nothing to do with it since they are both lossless.

darkjedi664
03-02-07, 10:14 AM
Hmmm, if lossless is lossless, then why does DTS-HD and DTS-HD MA have different bitrates for Blu-Ray (24Mbps) and HD-DVD (18Mbps)?

Those are MAX bit rates as allowed by each particular format. Depending on the audio source, the bit rate can vary quite a bit. For instance 96/24 6 channel audio will probably have a much higher bit rate than a 48/16 source. It's up to the content producer to make sure their audio doesn't exceed the max bitrate.

BTW, when testing a lossless codec, there is really only one valid test, and that is a bit-for-bit comparison with the original file. If they are the same, the codec works and the audio will sound identical.

If the two files are not the same, then the codec is broken and is not lossless. All this talk about lossless codecs sounding "different" is just nonsense.

I'm gonna make sure that the levels are matched between the A1 and the PS3 and test it again tonight. But I gotta tell you, the PS3 has a touch more punch. But they both sound great.

This is definitely a reference disc. I can't call myself a rabid fan of NIN... I prefer the material from Pretty Hate Machine and my taste for Trent's music has declined ever since really. However, from a performance perspective these shows are top notch, and the technical quality on both picture and audio is astounding! I applaud all those involved! Watching this Wednesday night with my girlfriend was the best time we've had soaking in the home theater in a long time!

Like Jim said that has more to do with what the data transfer rates a specific format can handle. Just like BD can have a higher video bitrate as well overall.

Saying "that is why I am sure it sounds better" just comes off as solidifying your ignorance on the subject. If the same master at the same resolution was used on both and they are both lossless, they are identical. If you are hearing differences, it is in your playback chain. In THAT case, pick the one that sounds better to you in your system, but don't make the mistake of saying one is better than the other from a technical standpoint.

I think people get too caught up on numbers here and don't realize that at a certain point the numbers don't mean anything anymore. CJPlay talked about this before he went away as well. At a certain point with video you reach a point that no matter how many more bits you throw at it, it won't make a difference. Each video codec (and audio codec) has this and they will all be different. So just because one can go higher doesn't mean that it is better than another at a lower level, you would be comparing apples and oranges.

I would say over 99% of the people on these boards cannot in any way do valid objective reviews of any of these formats from an audio or video standpoint. I know I can't. My reviews on HD are subjective as I have no access to the masters to do a comparison with. What we have are opinions that are all over the place and I would be that the majority of them come from people with equipment that cannot take full advantage of the sources, is setup incorrectly, or don't even know what to look for in the first place. But this is always the unfortunate side of a public forum. Most of the people here seem to think that whatever they see is the best thing out, until they see the next thing

I just got TDS too (to go with my new Panny.) The Closer video's cool, but for pure raw talent, I like the video for March of the Pigs. One camera, no cuts, played live. Nice...

How's With Teeth? I'm thinking about ordering it for the DVD-A side (can't get enough now that I've tried it.)

I switch my PS3 to digital bitstream and let those 7.1 channels just melt around me. Trent does AMAZING things with those rear surrounds. From what little I've gleaned from With Teeth, the surrounds aren't quite as active as they are on TDS, but they're still cool. There's only one video on it and we have a better version on the BD. As for the music, it's good but with two huge highlights, Only and Every Day is Exactly The Same. There's other good stuff on there but I have to spend more time with it.

This disc is spectacular and makes you realize just how great Blu-Ray can be compared to regular DVD. I have the "All That Could Have Been" DVD concert video from 2002 and the video quality was always disappointing to me. The strobe lights and fog always created pixelization / macroblocking issues for me and the image just never looked crisp. By comparison, this new Blu-Ray of "Beside You in Time" is flawless. Zero artifacts. Stunningly crisp video. And the True HD sound is just stunning. "Only" and "Head Like a Hole" are going to be the new demo tracks when showing off my home theater. It's going to be extremely difficult for me to watch my old concert DVDs now that this is on the market.

Hmmm, I'm trying to play the disc in PowerDVD 7.2, and I get audio skipping every couple seconds when D THD is selected, but switching to DD 2.0, plays fine. I can play DTS-HD and LPCM just fine. Do I have a bad disc, or is it a PDVD problem? Seeing as how this is the first D THD for Blu-Ray, maybe they didn't test that properly. 7.1 for HD-DVD played THD tracks just fine.

I suspect it's a PDVD problem as the Dolby TrueHD tracks seem to be fine on standalone players.

Yepp... he quit the drinking/drugging and hits the gym daily.
If I remember correctly he went through therapy and rehab and the music reflects some of those changes (IMO).

I finally got a chance to watch most of the Winter tour - the visual quality was amazing.
The glass breaking effect on the curtain during 'Beside You In Time' literally lept off the screen, it was so 3-D.

That doesn't surprise me, but what's weird is, that PDVD 7.1 for HD-DVD plays THD tracks just fine. They're going to be releasing an update here for PDVD soon enough. I don't quite have the luxury of having an HDTV, BD player, and an expensive speaker setup; so I use my PC.

I am just getting ready to move out of a rental house into an apartment. I knew this was going to be a mistake. I guess I will have to get my sound fix in before I move. The SVS 16-46Pci needed a good workout anyway :). Too bad I won't have my projector until I move though. NIN at 80" or larger with awesome sound would have OWNED anything I have watched so far. Oh well, by the time I can actually upgrade to Dolby TrueHD I hope to be ready to buy a house. I will probably also buy a second sub for the system as well. Guess I better buy earthquake insurance. :)

Well I just read on Wiki that the rumor going around was that Trent released the DVDs but no one knows for sure, so download at your own risk. I also read at IMDB that there might have been some legal constraints between Trent and his former manager and Trent didn't want to release the dvd for fear the manager would profit off of it.

not to take this any further off topic, but just to clarify...trent definitely did release the closure dvd as a torrent. on the fan club website, this is made very clear. secondly, there is still a chance of a real release in a few years once he finishes out his current contract...they are treating him like a very low priority. he owes them one more new album and then some form of greatest hits thing and he is done with them and is going independent...this will probably happen in 2009 or 2010.

i'm not sure if an independently released album has ever debuted at the top spot on the billboard chart, but perhaps nin can do it in a few years.

He pretty well summed it up. The torrent releases were most definitely Trent, so there are completely legit. And I should know, as I have downloaded and burned them myself. They are both dual layer discs, so keep that in mind. They are also both very improved in quality over the VHS release. They also contain over 90 minutes of bonus features not on the VHS. Also, the same uploader (Trent) that released Closure released a DVD quality version of the Broken Movie, as well as soundboard recordings of Radio shows Trent did with Peter Murphy, complete with artwork. So again, it is safe to say that Trent is the mastermind behind all of this.

And now that the thread has gone completely off-topic, back to Beside You In Time. I must watch this Blu-ray atleast twice a week. It is just that damn good.
