My HSU Research VTF3MK3 sub *was* set to the auto position on the ON/OFF/AUTO toggle switch. My thought process was that the sub would only turn on when my receiver was on and playing a source.

The problem is that the Sub turns off or will not even turn on sometimes. I look at the back of the unit and the toggle switch's light is red. I have to manually toggle to ON and back to AUTO or just keep it on ON for the light to turn green and the sub to turn on.

My question is this....

Is it bad to keep the toggle switch on the ON position 24/7? (even when the rest of my home theater is turned off???)

Will the sub sit and suck tons of power in the ON position while the rest of my gear is off?

I dont want to have to turn the sub on everytime I want to run my gear....that would be a pain in the arse. I also do not want to send it back because it works fine other than the switch.

Anyone have suggestions/comments?

Shouldn't be a problem. I leave my VTF-3 HO switched to "ON" all the time.

The usual correction for this is to turn the gain down on the sub and up on the LFE or sub channel on the AVR. Too low of a source signal can have this effect on the Auto On circuit. If that doesn't work, contact HSU. That's the point of getting a good warranty.

Just an idea, I notice that my sub (3.3) wont turn green in the morning while just watching News or Weather channel ect... till some segment or commercial has some bass output to Auto turn it on. Ive seen it not turn on for 20 mins and sometimes its right away. But it always turns on when music/HT is on so im pretty comfortible that it works perfect and just waits for something 80hz or lower. GL im sure HSU will help ya out!

I pulled out the manual again last night and found almost exactly the solution you pointed out. Thanks! :)

I may just keep it on the ON position for now.

Thanks again everyone!

The HSU subs have a very sensitive gain. I have my my receiver subwoofer setting at -6dB and I still have to turn the sub down to around 25%. If I turn the subwoofer setting any higher, the bass would be too loud.

I have had 3 HSU subs....Origonally VTF-2's (2) and now VTF-3 MKIII. I've always had
problems with the auto/on. I had the VTF-2's auto /on bypassed, and leave the VTF-3.3
on all the time. I also have a Velodyne ULD sub in another room, and it has been in
the on position since 1992. Doesn't hurt the sub to leave it on and consumes a miniscule
amount of power.....vardo
