I see these names frequently mentioned. Can anyone tell me the pros & cons of using either one, or any other software for that matter? I do not have a laptop & thought about getting some long cables to reach from my computer to the AV receiver in the next room. I might need about a 30' cable to reach the receiver and maybe about 15' to place a microphone or RS meter at the seating location. I'm guessing the cable length will not be too critical since I would not be dealing with high freqs. Does this sound like a half-way reasonable way to get some measurements?

Depends, of course, on what kind of measurements you want. However, REW can tell you about the time dimension in ways that TrueRTA cannot and that is important to know for acoustical treatments and EQ.

Room EQ Wizard does more than TrueRTA. The main additional feature is being able to see modal ringing times. Most people consider only the raw frequency response, but excessive ringing is just as damaging.
