View Full Version : HDMI RGB or YCbCr
bloye881 02-28-07, 05:58 AM I have a HDTV and using HDMI hook up. Is there a different between RGB or YCbCr on HDMI? RGB brings out better pictures or YCbCr?
My 2nd questions is that what is different between bitstream/PCM? PCM is better or bitstream for blu-ray movies? If i pick PCM, will it stills work with current old dvds and ps2/ps games? or should I set it back to full bitstream?
ResOGlas 02-28-07, 05:59 AM YCbCr
Linear PCM
DaGamePimp 02-28-07, 07:24 AM Just different Video levels ( 0-255 vs. 16-235 ) and they can end up with the exact same result , it's all about the calibration ( keep in mind however that some displays do not handle RGB as well via HDMI , most are expecting digital component ) .

bloye881 02-28-07, 09:41 AM Does that means RGB has more range as in video levels? video level as in richer color and contrast?
One more quick question, I notice PCM seems to be uncompress audio or something and mostly will be handle by PS3 before output it out to optical, is that true?
Thanks again for the help!

optical doesnt have enough bandwith for uncompressed sound, so you can only get it via HDMI.

Oh really? I thought I read somewhere if output PCM to optical, PS3 will prcess it to some sort of form that can be read. (So far I tested it runs fine on my receiver via optical). I'm sort of confuse with this PCM issue(let aside the RGB deal). If it really uncompressed audio, how does it covert to be readable thru optical. /shrug
Slordak 02-28-07, 10:41 AM If you send uncompressed PCM audio to your receiver via digital optical, you will be getting two-channel stereo. You need some form of compression, such as a Dolby Digital bitstream, in order to receive 5.1 (and beyond) via optical. This is a bandwidth limitation of the SPDIF standard and not the PS3.

Protopet 02-28-07, 03:32 PM So what should users choose with HDTV's using HDMI?
YCbCr or RGB?
Please explain.
a5ayake 02-28-07, 04:21 PM PS3 outputs RGB over HDMI as limited range (16~235), which is correct according to HDMI specification. Full range(0~255) is supposed to be used with PC format only. But some display like my Samsung 4092D handles RGB over HDMI input as full range(0~255), and that causes wrong black/white level with PS3 since PS3 outputs 16~235. This mismatch between source and display causes wrong black/white level and washed-out color. Samsung recently fixed it. And that's why Sony updated PS3 firmware to support YCbCr over HDMI too.
Note that the YCbCr with HDMI option only applies to BD/DVD movies. With HDMI, PS3 uses RGB(16~235) for XMB and games no matter what option is chosen.
If your display receives full range(0~255) RGB over HDMI, YCbCr would be a correct choice. But I recommand to set the option to RGB and adjust black/white level because PS3 anyway uses RGB while in XMB and games. If you choose YCbCr, you need different black/white level settings for games and BD/DVD movies. (you should lower brightness for games and XMB)
If your display receives limited range(16~235) RGB over HDMI like Sony Bravia, RGB or YCbCr any option is okay.
Slordak 02-28-07, 04:22 PM It somewhat depends on what your television is expecting to receive in terms of colorspace for that input. If your HDTV has no problem accepting RGB over the HDMI interface, and understands that it should be displayed using the RGB colorspace, then this is probably the better choice. However, if your particular HDTV is expecting to receive standard HDTV/component color space information over HDMI, then YCbCr is the correct choice.
If this is configured incorrectly, you may have trouble passing "blacker than black" tests, or you may have issues with the set "crushing whites". If you've heard reports about the Xbox 360 "looking washed out" over the VGA interface, it's this same problem, i.e. a colorspace mismatch.

I have a Samsung 4692 LCD which I have my PS3 connected to (via HDMI).
I too was experiencing a washed out image (brightness was too high). I set the PS3 BD output to RGB, and calibrated my levels. I now have brightness set to 18 and everything looks good (games and blu-ray movies).
You also mentioned that Samsung recently fixed it. Can you explain or maybe post a link? Is there some firmware update for Samsung LCDs?
Thanks.

Samsung fixed this problem in their 2007 line-up released in Korea. It allows users to choose a color level for HDMI input. I'm not sure recent US models have this option or firmware update is available.
TwinTurboZX 02-28-07, 10:18 PM Anyone with a XBR960, which video color setting are you using?
