Hi all PS3 end-uers using optical cable !

Pls suggest which brand of optical cable you are using for outputing the digital sound ? and how much ?

Can I just use "cheap cheap" optical cable (e.g. I saw "Philips" optical cable just selling for US$6 !! )

As the "life" of this optical cable will be quite short (i.e. will be of no use if I replace my AV receiver to those newer one with HDMI input) I do not want to spend too much on this cable, but of course the sound quality still need to be good !

The $6 cable should work without any problems.

It's a digital signal (0's and 1's), so you'll either get sound or you won't.

Right. Unlike with analog signals, where every small flaw in the signal can directly map to a corresponding flaw in the output, digital signals are pretty stable. This is because an entire range of voltages maps to a "1", while another range of voltages maps to a "0". For example, a 5V signal might be defined to be value "1" from 3.4V to 5V, and value "0" from 0V to 1.8V. Even if there's some signal loss and the 5V pulse is received as, say, 4.8V, it's still a "1", and is exactly the same "1" as if the full 5V was received.

It's not exactly the same for optical transmission (i.e. not voltages), but it's the same concept.

Not exactly. Optical does suffer from signal degradation. To the point that it will cause service problems. Not that big of a deal for Home Audio but when you are talking OC-192 (any OC rate really) It can be a serious issue. The sayings "1's and 0's or the light is on or the light is off" isnt entirely correct. But for the OP. the 6 dollar cable should do him just fine.
