Many optical drives will play fine for many years without ever being cleaned. Many drives are very sensitive to dust. Example: Toshiba HD-DVD players, many SACD players, etc. The slightest bit of dust will cause these players to skip, misread the disc or in the case of the HD-DVD drives, the player will freeze.

Much of this drama can be avoided by taking care of your discs, keeping them clean, dust free, scratch free and also by regularly cleaning the drive.

I provide a new laser lens cleaning disc that has micro fiber cleaning brushes to all clients who purchase disc transports or optical media players from our company. We recommend to all of our clients to clean all DVD and CD optical drives once a week with the lens cleaning disc. Because some dust may have found its way into the player during manufacturing or shipping, I also recommend they clean the drive before ever placing a media disc in the player.

If you stay on top of it from the time the player is new, you may never need to have a professional, wet cleaning performed on the player.

If you don't know where to purchase commercial grade lens cleaning discs, Radio Shack sells a decent DVD laser lens cleaning disc.

I ordered a DVD Lens Cleaner disk from B&H and they sent a TDK CD Lens Cleaner. I haven't used it yet.

Any opinions or experiences as to whether this brand is OK for the purpose? Are they all pretty much equal?
