I could not think of any other forum to post this question and did a few searches without any success. So here goes:
How can I send audio from a PC to home theater receiver ? I know there are several FM transmitter for mp3 players which work mostly in cars. I would like to hook a similar device to my PC, use AC power and be able to transmit any audio from the PC (CD, online radio station etc.).
Any suggestions ?

A cable of course would be best, but if that is not an option...

I would advise to stay away from the AC power transmitters, I have never seen anything good from them.

A simple FM transmitter, like you might use with an mp3 player in your car, would work, but the quality would not be the best.

There are IR and RF transmitters that can be had pretty cheap. Some do both audio and video. RCA sells a pair of units, one has a usb connector, the other a stereo jack. This is bundled with a remote control. It works pretty well. Buy.com had it for about $20 before the new years. Excellent for the money, and the remote is a nice bonus.

There are many media players for your AV system which use your computer as a server for mp3s, videos, etc shared across your network. You can get wired or wireless ones. Some of these can get expensive, but will work the best.

I guess it depends if you are wanting to do with or without wires.

I use Xitel's Pro HiFi Link (http://www.xitel.com/product_phfl.htm) to send all my my audio from my laptop to my receiver. It's a pretty nifty product. USB to the HiFi Link - from there you run either TOSLINK, coax, or RCA to your receiver. It'll passthru DTS and DD if you need it to (works well for me using Intervideo WinDVD).

You can read more about it from the link I gave above - but I recommend it if a wired setup will suit your needs.

Thanx for all replies. A few questions about this Linksys product. I currently have a (really) old PC connected to my wireless router. This PC sits in my basement and I really don't use it for much. The second PC is connected wirelessly to the router through a USB adapter. This second PC is the one I want to stream audio from. Will this setup work with the Linksys system or does it need the software be installed on the PC connected to the router ?

I can only say that I have wireless cards in my PCand laptop, and a separate wireless router: that's my basic wireless network. The Linksys Music Bridge software is installed on both, and start it up on whichever computer I'm using to play music at the time. It connects to my wireless network and then I use foobar2000 to make playlists and actually play the files, which are stored on a portable hard drive which I connect either to the PC or Laptop. I can also leave it attached to just the PC, and access it over the wireless network via the laptop, but there's a bit of lag time between song selection and playback when I do that, and there's occasionally issues with keeping the extrenal hard drive visible to the wireless network (even though it's supposed to remain 'shared' at all times, the way I have it set up).

This is good information. It looks like the Linksys product cares about the network and not a specific computer. I will do some research on all the options above and let you guys know what I decide to buy.

Update guys - I wimped out and took the easy way out. I bought a USB powered Griffin RocketFM from the online auction site. IT works just fine for what I need. The best part is that it took me just 5 minutes to set up and get it working. I am now streaming audio from 'My Station' on Yahoo messenger.
