View Full Version : Would this work for uncompressed PCM? daUrbanVibe 02-28-07, 06:32 PM Hi im a newb and I was wondering whether or not I could get uncompressed audio from my ps3 if I had a set of Onkyo SKS-HT540 speakers hooked up to an hdmi receiver. Thanks. wishman35 02-28-07, 06:41 PM as long as you have an HDMI output on your receiver than you should be able to get the amazing PCM. Sadly i only have toslink so i only get PCM through 2 speakers but heck its better than nothing and for sure louder. BUT yes you can get it daUrbanVibe 02-28-07, 06:50 PM Thats wat I figured but apparently most hdmi receivers that come with htib's cannot output true uncompressed audio. Wats the difference? SirDrexl 02-28-07, 07:52 PM as long as you have an HDMI output on your receiver than you should be able to get the amazing PCM. Sadly i only have toslink so i only get PCM through 2 speakers but heck its better than nothing and for sure louder. BUT yes you can get it That's not necessarily true. Just because a receiver has an HDMI input or two, that doesn't mean it can accept multichannel PCM audio. Some receivers don't do anything to the signal and pass it on to the display (like Pioneer's non-Elites, for example). The only reason they have them in that case is so the receiver can act as a switcher. Then, you have receivers that have limitations. Some simply amplify the audio as is, without allowing any adjustments like speaker volume control, bass management, time delay adjustments, etc. when using HDMI. Some won't pass 1080p video. Some will convert component video to HDMI and some won't. The whole thing has caused me to give up for now and wait for some more options. The best thing to do is look up the users manual for that particular receiver and read it carefully for any "gotchas." Then, if you still have questions you can ask on the forum. ryoohki 02-28-07, 07:55 PM Denon is coming out, this summer, with HDMI 1.3 Amp that have DD Plus, TrueHD and full DTS HD decoder + full PCM support.. i think it's the 3808 + and in september the 2808.. I'am sure other CE will follow.. I'am sure other CE will follow.. Does it have DTS Master Lossless or just HD support? Then again, if the PS3 supports internal decoding, will it really matter since I can pass it as PCM? metalsaber 02-28-07, 08:54 PM ^^ That really is the big question. SetterP 02-28-07, 08:57 PM ^^ Yeah i'd love to have a firmware update to have the PS3 decode DTS-HD MA and pass it as PCM. Come on now Sony, if they can decode TrueHD I have hopes for the DTS-HD too! tlreddragon 02-28-07, 09:34 PM Why would it matter if a receiver is able to decode DTS-HD MA or not if the ps3 will eventually be able to decode it internally? SetterP 02-28-07, 09:50 PM That's what we're saying. If the ps3 can decode DTS-HD MA internally and output as pcm we won't need external decoding at the receiver end. Yeah, we'll just need a receiver that passes pcm without any hiccups, which hopefully the Denon will do. I swear this is more complicated than I was hoping it would be, so many reciever's with pcm issues, I just want to know how it sounds, the suspense is getting to me..... I'm dying to hear BHD in it's full glory metalsaber 02-28-07, 11:25 PM Well with my VSX82, it is close to the best as possible. I just need to get my firmware updated so that I can get the true LFE that should be supplied. thebigdaddye 03-01-07, 12:24 AM onkyo 604 and have had zero problems playing blu ray and listening to pcm audio off of blu ray movies. for the price on the onkyo 604($360 online) you can't beat it unless you want 7.1. plus as you guys have said and i keep hearing the ps3 will be updated to support the other hd audio like hd dts hd ma ect.. i just can't believe how nice and clear the sound is compared to dd and dts. if you can get a receiver that does hdmi/pcm then i would get one it doesn't have to be the onkyo 604 like me , just get a good one and enjoy the sound and image in all it's glory! tlreddragon 03-01-07, 01:25 AM for the price on the onkyo 604($360 online) you can't beat it unless you want 7.1. The 604 is a 7.1 receiver... thebigdaddye 03-01-07, 01:58 AM The 604 is a 7.1 receiver... sorry i ment if you want 7.1 pcm, pretty sure the 604 only does 5.1 pcm. otherwise yes it's a 7.1 MrB84 03-01-07, 02:23 AM sorry i ment if you want 7.1 pcm, pretty sure the 604 only does 5.1 pcm. otherwise yes it's a 7.1 Well since I only have room for a 5.1 in my room, can a 5.1 pcm receiver play 7.1 pcm tracks at 5.1? |
