View Full Version : Center Speaker Mounting Dilema
Hello,
I just purchased Martin Logan Frescos as my center channel, but I have no clue how I can mount it. I can't put it on top of my TV because it's a rear projection LCD with very little room on top. I can't put it on the stand because there's no room in front of the TV. I can't put it at the bottom of the stand because, once again, there's no room.
So I'm looking to mount this thing near the top of the TV using a speaker mount. But the problem is, I have my entertainment center in a corner, so a lot of mounting options won't work for me. I've tried searching for corner speaker mounts that extend its arms out (so the speaker won't be too far behind the TV), but I haven't found anything that I can use. Do you guys have any ideas? Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
And no, moving my entertainment center around is out of the question. ;)
Omnimount makes a shelf for rear projection tv's that sits atop the set. I am using one for my dlp and it works great.
Yeah, I have that same shelf.

Amazon has them for under $30 shipped. CC for a little over $40 if you want it today.
I've also looked into that option, but I'm afraid that it might damage my TV. It might not, but I just don't want to take any chances. These Fresco speakers are on the heavy side as they weight around 16lbs. If possible, I'd like to just mount it on the wall. Thanks for your input though.
Well, if you don't want to take a chance, I understand. I will say they're rated to 30lbs and I would believe it. It's mostly metal and pretty solid on my TV. They use adhesive pads to stay in place.

If you do mount it on the wall, try to get it as close to the screen as you can so there won't seem to be a disconnect between the sound effects/dialog and the images/characters on the screen. Nothing worse than seeing someone on TV seemingly throwing their voice to somewhere high above. :p
BTW, I'm just posting this so you can see it from all angles and have an informed decision. Good luck with your solution. :)

The frames for those RPTS that are thin at the top are thin at the top for a reason: The frame is not built to support much weight. Over time, there is a danger of the plastic of the frame sagging which will in turn cause the screen to sag. Not worth the risk IMHO.
I suggest either mounting a shelf (custom if need be) on the wall or suspending one from the ceiling. I understand this is a pain and a non-trivial expense as well. But some things you just have to do... The vertical angle of the face of the speaker should be directly facing the primary seating area or "sweet spot." A friend and an SPL meter can help you get it oriented properly.
Good luck.

Have you considered building a shelf yourself that would mount to the wall above the tv? Wouldn't be hard at all with a few simple tools and a couple trips to Home Depot. And you could make it look however you wanted.

My thoughts exactly. I'd rather not take my chances.

I've definitely thought about building my own. I'll do that if I can't find anything that'll work with my setup. But I just wanted to see if there was a mount that will meet my needs because I'm not the most handy or creative person. :o I just figured I'm not the only person that's had this dilemma.
Well, I looked at a shelf, too, before I settled on the Omnimount.
At Home Depot, in the shelving materials isle, they have premade shelves of various types. Some are just polished and stained boards that would require brackets of some sort, others are more elaborate shelves with their own mounting hardware.
As long as you can get the speaker to sit somewhere near the screen, it should work pretty good.
Maybe it'll help if I showed a picture of the room.

The distance from the corner to the TV is around 37 inches. Have you guys seen any mounts for this kind of setup? Or any ideas on a custom mount? Thanks!
Wow, that is a challenge.
You could use one of those TV mounts that swing out and have it hold up the speaker, but that's kind of pricey and tacky.
Only other thing I can think of is a speaker stand of some sort behind the TV. My concern would be making sure it's in the right place so it doesn't seem disconnected from the images on the screen.

We have the same TV. It's a 3LCD 46" Wega. I used the same mount shelf as Tulpa.
It's not hazardous whatsoever. Mine is supporting 19lbs of center channel right
now but it can handle 30lbs.
Megalith 03-01-07, 09:13 PM I have the same problem, and I've decided to go with a floor stand. Placing the speaker on the floor will allow me to raise it so the tweeters are aimed at the listener.
Anything else seems too dangerous.
digital desire 03-01-07, 09:48 PM Here is one I threw together to fit on a CRT flat screen.
I don't know what I am going to do when I get a panel, it will probably end up under it. The speaker weighs about 80 lbs.
From what I have seen in the RP forum, it is a bad idea to hang mass on the back as it will distort the reflecting surface inside.
My point here is if you make one, the rear part can be form fitting instead of the point loading that the omni presents, and will distort the shape of the back less.

Holy damn that's gigantic! How does it perform?
digital desire 03-01-07, 10:09 PM It is a *very* good speaker.
It is a product from this thread:
http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=15323
One of the most popular over there it would seem, at least judging by the length of the thread.
like.no.other. 03-01-07, 10:35 PM That's bigger than my LCD monitor :(
Bone215 03-03-07, 05:11 PM try running with no center, shouldn't be a problem with your set up
