View Full Version : Klipsch RW-12d , Something better for the price?
Mathesar 03-01-07, 01:54 AM I received my Klipsch RW-12d today and think it sounds great, It's a huge step up over the stock Onkyo 10" that came with my Onkyo HT-S790 HTIB, but I dont have many other subs to compare it to and Ive never heard any of the popular subs mentioned around here (SVS / HSU etc.) Im just curious if I could have bought something better for the money, I have 2 weeks to decide if I want a refund.
What would you guys buy with around $750?, How would say the HSU VTF-3 MK2 compare to the RW-12d? I know its all subjective but Im still interested in others opinions, Thanks.
I mainly use my system for video games and movies so deep bass is a plus.
it is pretty well established that the internet-direct brand subs deliver more bang for the buck than those you can take home from you local B&M outfit. its just a matter of economics...no middle man.
at $750 pricepoint there are so many good ID options, the HSU VTF 3.3, SVS PC 20-39 or PB-12+ would be at the top of my short list, along with maybe something from axiom, outlaw, or AV123.
i'm sure you've got a decent sub on your hands, but i would be shocked if you couldn't get better performance for the same $$ from one of the brands/subs listed above.
Mathesar 03-01-07, 09:09 PM Thanks, Do you think it would be worth the hassle of returning the RW12d for a VTF-3 MK2? I could get the MK3 but im affraid it might be overkill in a small room? My room is a little smaller than the "Mid-sized room" rating on HSU's site ,the MK3 is rated for Huge rooms.

bear in mind that i haven't heard either sub in person, but from hanging around these forums for over a year and my own personal experience with B&M vs. ID subs, i would say without hesitation the HSU will likely outperform the Klipsch sub in every important way possible.
there is no such thing as "overkill" with subwoofers, just extra headroom. the taste for bass is quite addictive, once you hear reference level bass at 20Hz there is nothing else like it. the HSU will do that no problem, not so sure about the Klipsch. they are different animals, the Klipsch is engineered to produce adequate bass while looking sexy with some cool bells and whistles. Dr. Hsu engineers his subs for raw balls to the wall output while maintaining superior musicality and SQ.
do as you wish, but for me, this would be a no-brainer. just one man's take on it.

I am facing a similar decision, but am considering the smaller versions RW10d and VTF-2 MK2. Having now heard both I am keenly interested in your findings regardings the performance between the two...Thanks

I bought the VTF3 MK3 with Turbo and its definitely superior to the RW-12d! Even when testing without the Turbo attached and the sub set at 25hz its still capable of playing noticeably deeper bass than the RW-12d , The MK3 has virtually no port noise while the RW-12d's port noise was pretty noticeable in certain situations (especially the Darla taps aquarium scene in Finding Nemo). It's also worth noting that the MK3 is HUGE compared to the RW-12d and weighs almost twice as much.
The overall bass quality on the RW-12d was clean and didnt sound boomy which was a big plus, Same goes for the HSU except it does everything better and without the port noise ,So from my experience I would definitely have to recommend HSU over Klipsch, Hope this helped.

Yes very much - It's always good to get a users perspective.
