I have a Sony 1031q projector I bought off of fleabay about two years ago . It was originally from tampa university. It has ran good as a family tv for the last two years . It runs for almost 10 hrs a day. I noticed about a month ago that the screen gets smaller (80%) when it is a mostly white image on the screen. Now it shuts off after about an hour of use and then if you turn it off and back on it works fine for several more hours. When it shuts off everything shuts off fans/lights/guns. I assume this is probably a power supply issue but I don't know. I seem to remember that these are not worth fixing once they start falling apart. I originally paid about $300 for this projector and That seems fair for atleast two years of service. I am using the composite imput from a cable box and the power is run through a surge supressor and I have a surge suppressor in the main panel in the basement.

If the screen got smaller and defocussed then it would be a high voltage problem. You might be able to find replacement parts, but the Sony 10xx series is not the most modular style of projector.

Yeah, they are cool little projectors but not worth fixing when they go down. The value of one with good tubes is probably ~$150.

Replace all the capacitors in the power supply board (under the lenses) especially the small capacitors. Or just sell of the tubes if they're really nice and toss the rest.

Nate, it most likely is the power supply that is located right under the green lens under the metal cover. I can repair it if you want to send it to me. Finding good used 1031 power supplies at this point is getting pretty tough, and if it's one of the custom chips in the supply then the supply is a writeoff.

If you've really been running the set for 10 hours a day for hte last 2 years, then I'd simply get another set, you've gotten your money out of that one for sure.

I have bought a nec xg-1350 to replace this unit. I will sell this unit or just sell the tubes. I will let you guys know how I make out. If I do part it out I will post the parts on here first. This unit will run sometimes for 5hrs+ without trouble and then sometimes it will shut off about once and hour. I do not have the nec unit yet it's in shipping. What can I expect with this new unit compared to my old clunky PJ? Thanks Nate

You can expect a WAY better picture BUT you will need to get a scaler and run RGB. Composite is not even a good signal for the 1031Q. You could have gotten a much better pic from the 1031 all along.

DONT run composite on the NEC because I can only assume you will be dissapointed. I think the NEC will look pretty bad with just composit video compaired to a "watchable" pic from the sony.

I have a vd-z3 converter to change from the Y Pr Pb to vga. Would this be an okay converter to feed this Pj. I am on a limited budget because we have a newborn and one of us is not working right now. What should I use as a setup? Thanks Nate
