View Full Version : Finding some Blu Gems, lower than SD price$
PioManiac 03-01-07, 03:33 PM Just wondering if anyone else is finding some titles cost less for Blu Ray
versions than the SD DVD version?
Maybe its just a fluke..
I first noticed when shopping locally (Canada) for a copy of The Worlds Fastest Indian...the SD DVD was $34 (canadian) at wally world,
no Blu Ray version to found here yet anywhere.
Here's the Best Buy add for $35.99 SD DVD
Click here (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFSM2114762&catid=20450)
I ended up ordering a Blu Ray version on-line for $21 ($25 canadian) from DVD Pacific..and will be getting it soon (along with Casino Royal)
Now today I'm looking at the pre-order prices for Happy Feet
the Local Best Buy has it advertised for $23.99 for Blu Ray (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFSM2127765&catid=24101&PCName=DVD%5FFUTURE)
...and on the very same site, its $25.99 for the SD DVD (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFSM2127762&catid=20455&PCName=DVD%5FFUTURE&logon=&langid=EN)
maybe its just a typo
Marc D Carra 03-01-07, 03:44 PM Not a typo. And look at the price of the HD-DVD combo! $34.99:

I've actually picked up the Blu-ray versions of a couple new releases that have been 2 or 3 dollars cheaper than the SD DVD version. Great, isn't it?? :)
Marc.
This is flawed logic. Just because they charge ridiculous prices for the DVD doesn't mean less ridiculous prices for Blu-Ray are good. BOTH prices need to come down.
PioManiac 03-01-07, 05:11 PM Well I tend to purchase movies I KNOW will be watched more than once or twice,
So considering seeing a single new release in the Theatre for two with Corn & Cokes is going to run me at least $35....
I have no problem paying $25 for a High Def Disc, that will see multiple playings
But for a low quality SD DVD to cost "more" than 2 Adult Tickets with treats at a BIG Screen Premier does seem a bit of a stretch.
Marc D Carra 03-01-07, 07:28 PM Yeah, $23.99 in Canadian Dollars is a decent price for a high def disc, be it Blu Ray or HD-DVD. Heck , I remember the laserdisc days of spending $75-100 for a movie. Those were the days!!
Marc.
ryoohki 03-01-07, 07:43 PM 23.99 for a new title is cheap. most new release are 27.99... 25.99$ and sometime 29.99$ (two disc edition)
eightninesuited 03-01-07, 07:58 PM I bought First Blood, Reservoir Dogs and American Psycho at Future Shop for $19,99. New releases like Descent, Crank, are $25,99. That's outstanding. I wish all others would price their catalog films for that price. Lionsgate is my fav studio in this regard.
lemming75 03-01-07, 09:03 PM I got House of Flying Daggers at the BOGO sell at BB, for $5 less than the SD.
invadergir 03-02-07, 12:49 AM Man that is an awesome deal for Happy Feet on Blu-ray in Canada if all places. I will more then likely pay the extra for the HD-DVD version over the BR just to enjoy my TrueHD track and the combo is kind of handy in my household. If i could of enjoyed a LPCM track on the Blu-ray if i a) the disc had the track and b) i had a HDMI receiver for playing the track. I oul dof for sure bought the BR version instead.
Also i have found a pretty great place for used HD-DVDs and Blu-ray movies to purchase from. I don't know if many Canadians have a BeatGoesOn (http://www.beatgoeson.com/) store in their area but i have found HD-DVDs for $16.99 and no higher then $22 for both Blu-ray/HD-DVD movies. Getting my copy of Monster House tomorrow for $20 :) Can use the adress above and they only charge an extra dollar for shipping it out anywhere in Canada or to the nearest store location near you. Just type in the movie name (minus HD-DVD or Blu-Ray at the end) and they will show what is possibly available DVD, HD-DVD or Blu-ray wise at their stores.
Chris Rein 03-02-07, 12:52 AM To be like beatboy...
That must be a sign that Blu Ray is folding!
:p
talbain 03-02-07, 02:21 AM This is flawed logic. Just because they charge ridiculous prices for the DVD doesn't mean less ridiculous prices for Blu-Ray are good. BOTH prices need to come down.
lol yeah. best buy is the worst place in the world to seek wisdom in the prices of dvd media...
donricouga 03-02-07, 11:02 AM $23.99 CAN is actually pretty good price for a blu-ray. Thats about $20.41 USD. So hopefully bestbuy here in the U.S. will have it for $19.99. I was also looking at that link for happyfeet on bestbuy.ca and it doesn't mention anything about PCM audio or any other lossless audio format. Is Warner pulling another Superman returns on Blu-ray ???
