darkjedi664 03-01-07, 08:44 PM Is PCM worth $48.91?
GamerGuyX 03-01-07, 09:01 PM Is PCM worth $48.91?
It's worth a lot more than that actually.
It's worth a lot more than that actually.
Maybe he was asking about this movie specifically. I actually liked it.
It's a good movie, I don't know if it's worth that much though. Probably one Warner will reissue in a "Deluxe" set here in the US with PCM tracks eventually.
I don't have a HDMI receiver yet anyways so it's much less of an issue for me.
GamerGuyX 03-01-07, 10:24 PM Maybe he was asking about this movie specifically.
Yeah and that's exactly what I was referring to.
Dan Hitchman 03-02-07, 02:27 AM If they released Superman and Superman II with uncompressed PCM tracks (because I'd be buying them all over again!), I sure as hell would be pissed. Superman Returns was "eh" in comparison. It was definitely missing the heart and chemistry of the first two Chris Reeve movies.
Dan
I can now buy this one and sell my HD-DVD version because I have PCM via my Sammy but not TrueHD (A2, no analog).
You will be able to get it cheaper than that but not necessarily to the US:
http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/4-/3317766/Superman_Returns/Product.html
If people here in the States want it badly enough Amazon.uk has it HERE (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Superman-Returns-Blu-ray-Marie-Saint/dp/B000NDM40S) ~$38+shipping.
teiresias 03-02-07, 11:14 AM That's good, now get a PCM track on the US release of "Happy Feet" dammit. This whole PCM fiasco with them is ridiculous.
ToEhrIsHuman 03-02-07, 12:45 PM Anybody think Sony/WB will honor the $10 PS3 rebate on the import version?
Me neither...
hassoon 03-02-07, 12:56 PM That's good, now get a PCM track on the US release of "Happy Feet" dammit. This whole PCM fiasco with them is ridiculous.
I sure hope they deal with that one before they release it.
As for Superman Returns...
Why can't they just reissue the release and get it over with  ?
Why can't they just reissue the release and get it over with  ?Because it was a relatively big seller and they don't want to start a precedent?
WriteSimple 03-02-07, 02:13 PM Because it was a relatively big seller and they don't want to start a president?
I think you mean to spell "precedent". :)
I believe it's high time Warner, IF and when they use BD50, maximize the space that's already there. The 5GB difference between BD25 and HD-DVD30 makes a huge difference only when it comes to SD extras but may not amount much for HD.
Let's hope that from here on out, they change their ways.

Fettastic 03-02-07, 02:44 PM I would not be surprised if Warner decided to release an HD box set to promote the next Superman film. Then perhaps we'll get all the films in PCM (and the documentaries too).
Before everyone gets too worked up about this, consider the possibility that DVDActive may just have the specs wrong.
I know UK releases run at 25fps instead of 24fps, making it compatible with their SD 50hz PAL standard. Does their HD standard have any compatibility issues with our ATSC standard?

BDs are released in 1080p24 here, so no worries in that department. The only HD content I know if in 25p is Planet Earth (but that was filmed in 25p, without any speedup, I think) and some Studio Canal HD DVDs had speedup.
It would be awesome if this turned out to be true, not that I like SR, but it could set a general trend for WB in the UK to use PCM for their releases so a film like 300 would be legendary!

I don't think Warner is gonna skimp with a high-profie release like 300 :) (Not a good idea to mess with Mr. "RED SAUCE ON PASTA!!!" :D:D:D) .
Hopefully all future releases will include PCM as standard (or TrueHD if they magically figure out way to do it).
Damn...sorry but 50-60 smackers just to get the PCM track is a bit too much. I think it's cheaper to extract the PCM from the HD-DVD version's TrueHD track, and remux/re-author it into a custom made Blu-ray disc :D !
I suspect Amazon.co.uk will quickly mark this down a bit. They usually do - as do many other online retailers. (Delivery to the US will bump it back up a bit though)This has been covered already. It might be helpfull to read through the thread before posting.

All European "HD Ready" displays have to be compatible with both 50Hz and 60Hz HD 1080i and 720p sources, as well as 480i/p 60Hz and 576i/p 50Hz SD stuff. this is a requirement for them to carry the European-wide "HD Ready" logo. (It also mandates HDMI/DVI+HDCP and Component analogue inputs to ensure connectivity)
European BluRay and HD-DVD players can therefore play 1080/24p material at 1080/60i or 720/60p as a minimum, and it is guaranteed to replay on an "HD Ready" display. (Just as in the US and Japan)
This means that HD pre-recorded releases can be made of 1080/24p stuff at 1080/24p - just as in the US. This means no speed-up on these releases, but can also mean 3:2 rather than 2:2 pull-down (so we get better sound but more juddery pictures than we're used to - unless we have 48/72/96/120Hz displays rather than 60Hz)
European TV productions made in HD are likely to be 1080/50i or 1080/25p originated (possibly 720/50p and including 720p material shot at other rates and converted) - and these are likely to be released in 50i or 25p. (If 25p is actually supported ...)

Thanks guys! One more dumb question. Are there any region-free Blu-ray players yet?
Thanks guys! One more dumb question. Are there any region-free Blu-ray players yet?No.
GamerGuyX 03-03-07, 01:01 AM No.
If I remember correctly the Samsung BD-P1000 with the original firmware has no region protection.
If I remember correctly the Samsung BD-P1000 with the original firmware has no region protection.Yes, and I suppose if you want an eternally buggy player and have no plans on ever updating your player and being able to play all titles anyways you will always have a region free player. So, realistically, I think the answer remains, No, there are no region free players.
I guess there will eventually be a region free players if the format ever becomes popular enough (players proliferate, cheap, etc).

P.S. Your signature is hilarious. What movie is it from?
mgoldsmith 03-04-07, 11:48 PM Hi All,
I have just confirmed with Warner Australia that the versions we are getting here in OZ for Blu-ray and HD DVD are the USA disc images, so there is no PCM soundtrack on our blu-ray release based on this information.
Also, the catalogue code for the Aust release is the same as for the UK release, which should mean the discs are identical in every way (otherwise they'd use a different code to ID it).
I think you'll find it's just an error on the PR front.. but i hope i'm wrong.
Sincerely,
Matt Goldsmith

Some UK online stores are listing a PCM track. Importing to Australia would cost $50. Not taking that option.
Any further confirmation on PCM for Superman Returns, or even the previous 2 movies?.
Ive got all 3 imported from America waiting for the PS3 to hit. Will stay shrink wrapped until this is confirmed
JBlacklow 03-11-07, 11:22 AM Amazon.co.uk doesn't mention PCM in their listing. Did this change, or has it always only said DD?
Dave Mack 03-11-07, 05:18 PM interesting

Dave Mack 03-12-07, 12:39 AM that is very true.
JBlacklow 03-21-07, 08:57 AM So, any confirmation one way or another? Reviews, updates, e-mails to Warner UK?
JBlacklow 03-29-07, 10:17 AM Bumping for anyone who may have actually received this. My Amazon.co.uk order now reads May 14.
Again, any confirmation of PCM 5.1 on this title?
My copy turned up today, bad news I'm afraid no mention of PCM on the case, I'll give it a spin tonight and check for sure.
It's going back if it hasn't.
Just tried it, there is no PCM track.

Bender907 05-15-07, 08:51 AM Just got my Australian copy today at JB hifi and no PCM track. An exact copy of the American release by the looks of it even with FBI warning and American rating pg-13 before the movie starts. Am not overly wowed with it to be honest both audio and video quality (video mainly cos it was shot on digital, i work as a projectionist and on film it wasnt overly sharp). Special Feature wise its fantastic.
