Please vote.....I figure this forum would have more folks with more experience with Lossless sound.
Thx,
Claude
ResOGlas 03-01-07, 09:04 PM Uncompressed PCM sound is a very big deal. Optical is low bandwidth, everyone knows you should use HDMI or at least analog if you have the option. This shouldn't even be a poll.
metalsaber 03-01-07, 09:12 PM Uncompressed PCM via HDMI is superior no questions asked. Every movie that I currently own on DVD compared to BD/HD-DVD is much better with the Uncompressed audio.

I don't think there are any HD DVDs with uncompressed audio...
Do you mean Dolby TrueHD compression?

Well, I believe TrueHD is actually compressed lossless, and apparently it can be upconverted to PCM, so I guess that would be uncompressed lossless?

TrueHD is basically PCM in a smaller file size. When decoded, TrueHD becomes PCM. The fidelity of the two is therefore identical.
metalsaber 03-01-07, 10:36 PM I should have said Lossless audio and that would have covered it instead of Uncompressed.

lossless audio found on hd dvds and pcm are identical
DasNiche 03-02-07, 04:29 AM Okay, so I use my Blu-ray player (PS3) with a fiber optic cable to transfer the sound to my receiver. How much better would the sound be if I were to get a receiver that used the sound from the HDMI?
Also, I am using the Logitech z-5500 5.1 surround system (Yes, I know it's not a fancy shmancy set, but it sounds good to me... I can't afford the ones most of you probably use) Is the receiver in this changeable? If so, could someone please show me some good ones that would work with my speakers and also accept HDMI inputs/outputs?

You'll probably never believe how much of a difference it is until you hear it yourself. Since I'm no audiophile I never really cared about all the talk of sound quality being superior with HDMI recievers but after spending countless hours on this forum, I decided to pull the trigger and get Onkyo 604 and after receiving it connecting it to my Ps3.....i played Resident Evil blu-ray and all I can say was WOW !!! .
There is a HUGE difference between using optical cable verses HDMI. HDMI is VERY VERY clear, life like and fuller than optical.
As for the reciever, get a refurbished Onkyo 604 from ecost.com for less than $300 and you'll be more than happy :).

Yeah. :p
DasNiche 03-02-07, 02:08 PM Alright, thanks man.. I'll think about it when I get the cash.

Yep, that's an awesome track, probably even better then the Black Hawk Down PCM, IMO.
metalsaber 03-02-07, 03:51 PM Both are great PCMs, but Silent Hill and Tears of the Sun are also demo PCM material.
Bunga99 03-02-07, 07:59 PM Thanks for voting guys....I thought it was odd that I kept reading here in the Blu ray section that PCM uncompressed was so much better but the original polls showed differently.
I also wanted to ask....If I get an HDMI reciever like the onkyo 604, what does standard DVD sound like over HDMI? Hopefully its the same as optical???
Thx,
Claude

Bitstream will be bitsream whether over HDMI or Optical for DD or DTS.
Differernce is when discussing the new audio codecs. The only question I have is who is voting on that poll. Do they even have the equipment necessary to listening to it? Plus what age demographic are we looking at? Being 27, my hearing might still be better than someone 50+. Just a thought.

but what is with all this 10db boost that needs to be applied to the lfe that I keep hearing about? Was your receiver set up easy and did the settings work for both bd discs and dvd? Some say that some receivers fix that automatically and others say that some don't. Can you use an hdmi connection for both blu ray and dvd or would you need a seperate optical cable for the dvd player?

Does this mean, I will have to switch the PS3 from PCM to Bitstream when watching a standard DVD on HDMI or can I leave it on PCM?
Thanks again,
Claude
metalsaber 03-02-07, 10:06 PM That is your preference. I dont' watch SD DVDs on my PS3. I use my A2. Personally they should have used an AUTO option for audio via HDMI like the A2 does. Therefore Bitstream for SD DVDs and PCM for BDs.
bosorio 03-03-07, 12:52 AM I guess im pretty much a newb to this stuff.
I was under the impression that optical connection from the PS3 to my receiver would be the best option.
The setup i have right now, is already phenomenal in sound quality, however it does seem like I have to crank the receiver up quite a bit to get it as loud as I like for movies.
I currently use the Yamaha HTR-5860 and all Klipsch speakers.
This thread has me wondering if I would better enjoy my movies through the HDMI port. However that would require a new receiver for my setup.
metalsaber 03-03-07, 08:21 AM I personally can tell the difference between the old DD and Uncompressed PCM audio, so to me YES it is worth the upgrade.
Lossless audio is just as important as 1080p as far as I am concerned.
Malcolm_B 03-03-07, 07:24 PM Just hooked up my Pioneer Elite 81, and am BLOWN AWAY by Uncompressed PCM! Black Hawk Down was an amazing aural experience. No going back now!
tbass2k 03-03-07, 08:17 PM I just picked up the Onkyo TX-SR604 and I put on BHD and the Prestige in uncompressed 5.1 and it was scary how crisp it was. I have been listening to my hd-dvds in 5.1 analog out so I know how good lossless can sound, but now having lossless BD on my PS3 makes my HD experience complete.
Amen, otherwise job half done
