Ok well we are setting up a home theatre in the basement and has a big long thin board for a DIY screen lying around but low and behold this thing is way bigger then I thought and almost spans wall to wall. The problem now lies in can I put the speakers behind the screen with about a foot space from front to screen and hidden behind a thin curtain? How will this effect the sound? They will be spaced away from the screen and into open areas surrounding except well forward. Anyone? Or do I have to cut the screen and mount em on the sides?

You would need an acoustically transparent screen to do this ($$$$).

Yeah, it'll muffle the sound most likely.

They make screens with perforations to let sound through, but as rynberg said, better have a flexible budget. On the plus side, the sound will really seem to come directly from the images.

If you're intent on using the screen you have, cut it down so the speakers have a clear shot to where you sit.

Google SmX Screens and find the link. There's a guy here on AVS that found an AT screen material that outperforms most commercial AT screens. It is very affordable and should cost much less than $500 for your screen size.

That way you can have a large screen size as well as have the speakers behind the screen.

Look for SMX which is a fairly cheap Accoustic Transparent screen material
