View Full Version : Rainbow 6 Vegas: preferred weapons, GPS, general help
properbostonian 03-02-07, 01:20 PM I've been playing R6V more regularly and I need some help. I am now a Sargent but it's not getting easier for me. I hope you guys can offer some sound advice. :)
1) What is your preferred gun? Do you use a scope? If so, do you always fire through the scope?
2) Do you normally change weapons based on the map or do you pretty much stay with the same gun regardless?
3) Do you use GPS if it's not restricted? If so, does it help?
4) When do you show up on radar? Moving, firing your weapon, or both? Do you show up on the enemies radar if you are cruch walking?
5) Armor - do you use it? If so, it is effective?
6) Do you find there is an unbelievable host advantage? Even more so then the Halo2 host advantage? It's rare when I see a host isn't the leader in kills.
Thanks,
Danny

Put your x and y axis crosshair sensitivity on 10, and grab and MP7 with a rifle scope, and youll be unstoppable. No armor needed, just use cover every chance you get. Armor just slows you down in my opinion. I dont need armor, since I use the environment.
GhostRecon3 03-02-07, 08:25 PM whats up proper,
Personally, i like the submachine guns, MP9 and MP7, But it also depends on how you play and what map your on .. I usually try and use a scope unless its close range then i always stick with the reflex ...
As far as Assault rifles go, i like the MTAR21 and SCAR .. The AK is good in single shot with a silencer on it ...
Im not a big fan of GPS, because id rather not know where my enemies are, but if you know how to use it can greatly help your game ...
They really need to fix these Host Advantages because every FPS ive played in the past 10 years has ALWAYS had host advantage.. Just something the game companys have to get a clue about :D
I guess they could just run a billion dedicated servers lol
Im online everynight and we usually have good games going with cool people...... ( RainbowSix or GoW )
GT: PimpContourSVT
Keep Shootin, Keep ya head down
Ghost
i perfer the mp9 with only a vest for armor, any more and you slow down to much. skip the gps and have extra frags so you can lead with grenades when you enter a room.
UMP45 all the way, frag's and incendiary. Armor protection to mobility rating of 3/7, will try changing the X Y axis's to 10 to see if it makes a difference. I love this game, just made major will try out the new armor. Go with the sniper scope, also learn to use your on screen site (helps you learn to control the guns kickback). This game has the best cover mechanics, wish it was in GRAW2. Enjoy and good hunting.

I agree on the UMP45. I use it with th Rifle Scope. I only use the scope when I'm in cover. I don't bother with the GPS. Depending on the game type (and what is turned on) I go with Frag, C4, or Incendiary. If two of those are off I go with tear gas.
Whoady4Shoady 03-03-07, 03:05 PM I also forgot to put always remember to burst fire. Never hold the trigger down.
ThePrisoner 03-04-07, 06:06 AM I'm about to move up to First Class Sargent next. My current weapon is a MP7 with a rifle scope. I also like the MP9 with rifle scope. I normally get frags & incendiaries. I'll try the X Y axis on 10 when I get home today. Yeah, I'm one who always holds that trigger down, never tried 3 round burst before.

If you hold the trigger down, and you arent literally right on top of them, you will have a hard time hitting them.
performula 03-04-07, 04:05 PM Indoors: UMP45 w/burst or single
Outdoors: AK-47 w/ single
Armor: Three bars red

I've used GPS three times tops. All three times I was frustrated and had the Rambo mentality. People were either spawn camping exit points or four Elites were on a team (joke). When enemies show up on radar I believe a member of your team has spotted an enemy or was killed by them.
A negativity with the game is most multiplayer games are so lop sided. High ranks should split between teams. I'm one or two ranks after Master, but if there is a ton of silver on one team and Privates on another -I say something. Or switch myself.
PS. Definately want to try the X/Y Axix suggestion.

Been noticing that. Would you recommend 3 shot over single?
Thrillhouse17 03-04-07, 05:15 PM Been noticing that. Would you recommend 3 shot over single?
I would unless you're sniping. That way you're usually pretty sure that you've hit your target. I find that single shot is too slow, and if I don't get a head shot my target usually gets the drop on me.
properbostonian 03-05-07, 08:35 AM Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I appreciate it!
I only had a chance to play a few games over the weekend but your suggestions already made a difference. I used the MP7 for the first time with decent success. In fact, one game I had 21 kills. The most for me yet.
There are still a few more suggested weapons I want to try and I will this week. I don’t think I have the AK unlocked yet and I’ve noticed it’s a preferred weapon for some (i.e., it kills me a lot).
performula - you’re right. Most games are lopsided. In fact, I have only played in a handful of close games. It’s a shame there isn’t a “force even teams” option right before the game starts.
Seems like spawn camping on Kill House is common especially by the host. Also, being Bravo on Calypso Casino you are almost guaranteed to lose. There are only two ways to get upstairs and if you do not before Alpha gets into position, you are doomed. It’s a poorly designed map.
The good news is that you can choose the map so if you hate a certain map you can opt out of it. Thanks again.
Yeah, Calypso Casino is a terrible map for Team Sharpshooter. A&D it's pretty good.
PimpPenguin75 03-05-07, 11:46 AM Mp9 is good with a rifle scope and at long range put a silencer. 3/7 armor or 4/7 but light is the way to go x y sensitivity 7,8,9, or 10. And there u go your all set.
Whoady4Shoady 03-05-07, 01:19 PM Been noticing that. Would you recommend 3 shot over single?
I like to leave it on full auto, but I just tap the trigger.
ThePrisoner 03-05-07, 03:58 PM I played over the weekend and did pretty good. Last night and today I've been terrible! Do you guys ever go through ups & downs with kills.
poohead 03-06-07, 04:57 AM In general, go full auto - limits you too much to set to 3 shot - just use some self control in the right situations ;)
I used to hate the AK but now love it as a sniper weapon with the 6x scope set to single shot. Once you get used to adjusting for the bigger than average recoil, and using single shot properly it's a killer one shot bullet! MP9 is an awesome all rounder when fitted with a scope.
All in all gun choice depends on the sort of player you are. I hate the MTAR for example... but there's loads of people killing me with it ;)
Looks like the patch balanced out the weapons, at least that's what I'm hearing. Nothing from UBI yet but it sounds like the snipers and ARs were balanced a bit better.

A new Title Update for Rainbow Six Vegas X360 has been deployed. It can be automatically downloaded when launching the game. Find below the list of modifications and fixes:
Bug Fixes:
> Optimized the network replication of custom faces. You should see everyone’s custom face much faster in an online match.
> Fixed a bug where you can get stuck on a ladder in Border Town.
> Grenades no longer go through walls.
> Fixed the sound loop on weapons.
> Observers no longer cause a Team Unbalance penalty on experience points.
> Fixed a crash related to throwing an incendiary grenade and then quickly using your snake cam before it exploded.
> Leaderboards are now correctly updating results from ranked matches.
> Fixed a bug where you could lose your weapon.
> Killing terrorists with incendiary grenades now works correctly in Terrorist Hunt.
> C4 explosives are now properly seen by clients when placed on moveable objects.
> Players are now vulnerable to grenades when using mounted weapons.
> Fixed bugs related to the Survivor and Special Operations achievements.
> Host can no longer kick players once the match has started. Players can only be kicked in the lobby, or automatically kicked by excessive team-killing.
Gameplay Tweaks:
The weapons have been rebalanced based on the feedback you’ve given us. Thank you for your patience and continued support in making Rainbow Six Vegas the great multiplayer game that it is. Without further delay, here are the changes we’ve brought to the weapons:
Sub Machine Guns
o SMGs are now less lethal at long ranges. The damage they do at long range has been reduced in order to bring them more in line with how this type of gun should behave. SMGs remain very lethal at short to medium range.
Assault Rifles
o Assault Rifles are now where we wanted them to be. They’re more maneuverable than before and you can more accurately take aim at your target. The Assault Rifles excel at medium to long range when fired in short controlled bursts.
Light Machine Guns
o The amount of recoil when firing light machine guns has been significantly reduced, therefore making them much more accurate than before. This weapon excels when fired from a stationary position. It’s not meant to be a very manuverable weapon.
Shotguns
o Damage at long range has been reduced for shotguns. However, they’re still extremely lethal at short range.
Sniper Rifles
o Sniper Rifles have gotten the attention they deserve. Sniper Rifles are more accurate and benefit from an increase in damage. The key to being successful with a sniper rifle is to remain stationary when aiming at your target.
Gadgets
Frag Grenade: The explosive radius of the fragmentation grenade has been slightly reduced.
GPS Device: The scanning radius of the GPS has been slightly reduced, along with the number of uses it has.

Thanks for the post sbkfan.
These are all great. My only compliant is the shotgun tweak. Considering the number of one on one battles in close quarters, the shottie seems like it didn't get enough of a downgrade. Oh well.
Also, the sniper update looks like it may be a huge factor. Gotta keep your head down on streets and kill house. :)
I love the host change. I've been in several games when a host would kick a player from the opposing team just because he was kicking butt.

Yeah, I learned that one first hand last night on streets.
A good tactical sniper is a great addition to a team, and can freeze, or greatly slow the other teams movement. Even though I don't use it, I like the change.
ThePrisoner 03-07-07, 06:10 AM After the update I went back to AR's, used the G36 with Acog last night. Like it better than the MP7 now.
dankfoot 03-07-07, 08:28 AM Maybe someone can help me (well my dad)
I got him RB6 for Christmas and he is having a hard time with it, He has never played games but I thought a 360 and a few games might "give him something to do"
Anyway, one thing he is having a hard time with is when you try to aim up you press the stick up but that is really down. So it is kind of opposite. Can you reverse this?
Also, he has said he will be peeking around a corner or whatever and get shot only once or so and be dead. So I guess my question is do you find health somewhere or do you have to go through the whole mission on the same life/health.
I hope this makes sense.
Thanks

You can change the aiming in the options menu, under "invert aiming" I believe.

Good to know. Thanks. Curious to know if other's are changing their weapons because of the patch?
Ninjahedge 03-07-07, 09:53 AM Dank,
There is no "health" on these boards. You recover (based on how blurry your screen is) and sometimes when you get tagged, you need to just sit tight until you recover.
The fact that your father is being taken out with "one shot" may be from a sniper rifle, lack of any appreciable armor, or just teh fact that he may be less covered than he thinks.
As for the inverted vertical axis, you can change that in the menu. Most people like it inverted (me included) because it makes you feel more like you are grabbing the back of the head of the guy you are playing. So you push forward (mouse), you are roling the head "forward" making him look down.
It is less obvious with a control stick, but many FPS (first person shooter) people prefer it this way.
One last thing though, just tell your dad to have a bit of patience. This is not a blazing guns kamakaze kind of game here. There is no DOOM like armor, no super-powerups. It is more realistic than other shoot-em-up games.
But you get a good group of people to play with, especially on Terrorist hunt, and you can have a lot of fun as a beginner...
dankfoot 03-07-07, 10:02 AM Hey guys thanks for your help.
Right now Im playing GOW but I can't wait to finish so I can try RB6.
I have played a few times at his house and it is really fun.
Its kind of funny that I bought him a "top gamming system" and he wants to play old school games like frogger or something.
He just thinks Tiger Woods and RB6 are too hard.
One more question. Where do you get the armor? Are you always wearing it or can you change it?
formulanerd 03-07-07, 07:02 PM change your armor in the multiplayer outfitting screen
poohead 03-08-07, 05:13 AM thanks SBKfan - much appreciated!
CPanther95 03-08-07, 09:21 AM I heavily favored the UMP45 on burst, but just recently switched over to the 552 Commando. Much more kill power (single burst to the chest is a kill) - and if you aren't in full auto, it seems to have almost as little kick as the UMP.
Anyone have an idea how the achievements work in relation to being signed on to XBox Live? I completed the single player story mode on realistic, but didn't get the achievement. I remembered getting signed off of Live during one of the last sections while I was playing so I thought maybe you have to be on Live for the duration of the game. After replaying the final sections again, I still didn't get it.
Is it possible that if I was booted from live for one of the sections early in the game, I won't get credit for completion? That would suck if you have to replay the whole stinkin' game just to get that unknown missing level credited.

i know that the achievements i earned in Oblivion while offline carried over to the next time i signed into XBL. however, i did get the achievement when i completed the action (while offline). yeah it would suck if you don't get the achievement.
performula 03-09-07, 10:12 AM Someone explain invert look? Is this when you pull down on the aim the scope goes up? Confused.
agnathra 03-09-07, 12:46 PM Someone explain invert look? Is this when you pull down on the aim the scope goes up? Confused.
that's correct
CPanther95 03-09-07, 12:49 PM I can't even play a game without invert (normal ;) ) look.
Ninjahedge 03-09-07, 01:58 PM Think of it like this:
Your hand is on the back of your head. You "press" forward on your hand, you tilt your head down. Pull back, and your head goes up.
This was first done for the computer FPS games since it was more intuitive with the mouse.
It is less so with the controller, but once you get used to it, it really IS easier to control...

didn't it come from 1st person airplane controls? you pull back on the stick to ascend?
btw, i preferred inverted for years on PC FPS, but when i finally got halo on the xbox, i spent a very painful week changing to non-inverted. now i get dizzy just thinking about inverted on a FPS. strangely enough, a game like crimson skies is still perfect for me with its inverted controls.
