View Full Version : CompUSA Deals
mauricef 03-02-07, 01:31 PM If you have one of the many CompUSAs that are closing near you they have some good pricing on Blu-ray dics. All discs are currenly priced under $20. They are also lowering the prices each week on all remaining merchandise. I picked up a few discs that I did not have in my collection.
Special FX_45 03-02-07, 01:57 PM Which ones did you pick up? Did they have a decent selection when you were there? I'm thinking of swinging by one on the way home from work.
Fettastic 03-02-07, 02:07 PM CompUSA is going under? That's bad news for Apple because they were their number one retailer.
properbostonian 03-02-07, 02:12 PM Not completely but they are closing a boatload of stores (126 to be exact).

That was true here in Houston a couple of years ago. Although over the past 2 years, Apple has been opening a fleet of their own stores at quite a few malls here and they seem to be pushing some serious volume.

Have you been in those stores? Pretty much the height of snobbery. As soon as I walked in, I wanted out.
Was just in one and a lot of their stuff has the 10% off signs on them. The few DVD's and Blu-ray's they had were at 20% off, but they're still marked at retail, so it's still cheaper online.
DavidHir 03-02-07, 02:31 PM Years back when I was in college, I worked at a CompUsa as an inventory manager (I quit after three weeks --- the job sucked!). I use to listen in on regional management conference calls --- you would not believe how cut throat those people are... I mean it was beyond just being a total A**hole (and since then I've worked with executives in several large corporations...nothing has still come close to that).
I'm surprised they lasted this long. It's always been a ghost town there whenever I've been in one the past five years or so.
TwinTurboJosh 03-02-07, 02:34 PM I can't believe both stores in my town are remaining open. I was hoping for a liquidation sale.

When you can buy a full set up at Wal-Mart for $468 and anything you can possibly want can be ordered online from highly competitive etailers, it does not pay to specialize in computer sales anymore.

I picked up Rambo First Blood, Underworld Evolution and XXX. They had most of the early releases but I think they are going fast. So for the best selection I would get there soon.

I can kind of relate to your experience in some way. I've been to 4 of the locations in Houston and I've been treated fairly well except at one of the stores.

Actually i think CompUSA only accounts for about 2% of apple's income.

You're probably right. I'm assuming the vast majority of their sales are over the internet.

Apple store or CompUSA?

It wasn't that I was treated bad, it's just that the place looked like a china shop or a museum. I felt completely out of place there and I've been a Mac man for 12 years. And the service people are dressed like they're at an art auction or something.
My impression was that the atmosphere was completely non-conducive to what makes Mac a great brand. It's not hoity-toity just because it costs more. Mac is colorful and fun and versatile. iPod is in the hands of youth the world over so why does Apple's store look like Gimbal's jewelry section?

The Apple Store. CompUSA is just the red-headed step-child of Best Buy.

Apple has always branded itself as a upscale computer maker, so that they attract a diffrent market than PCs - and they succeeded. That's why the stores are built and decorated the way they are, and for the most part, you'll only find them in upscale malls or shopping centers.
Here is the list of stores that will be STAYING OPEN. If your store(s) are not on this list they are going bye-bye.

Hmm. Kind of suprised mine is closing, but since Best Buy went in and there are two Staples and an Office Depot close buy it's not so much so. I think I've been in there 3 times over the past 5 yrs.
infinitespecter 03-02-07, 06:48 PM I was just at my local CompUSA (Montclair, CA), and most everything had 10% off. Movies, however, were 20% off. Unfortunately, the only BDs they had were Memento, Saw II and III, Into the Blue, and something else which was somewhat lame. I decided to hold off until I can check out another stores selection. Even at 20% off, most prices weren't even as good as Amazon.
bimmerguy288 03-02-07, 08:00 PM I believe CompUsa is controlled/owned by the Mexican billionaire Slim something. Read it in some paper few days ago.

I was just at the 1960 and I-45 store and the Willowbrook store heh. Only impulse clearance buy i almost made was to pick up an iPod or a Nano, since those thing never go on sale and they were 10% off. Opted against it though since i'm still working on putting together my home setup first.
Picked up a copy of The Departed for $19.99 and 100 ft of 16 gauge Monster speaker wire for $24. Before i get browbeat, no i didn't buy it for the name. I bought it cause i was already up there and i'm going to need about 80 ft of speaker wire soon so i figured i should just pick it up now.
hassoon 03-02-07, 10:57 PM A bit off-topic, but it's funny that I just found this thread :) .
I just got back from a CompUSA here in San Diego. I had to go there to return a defective 1 TB external hard drive.
Pretty much everything in the store was about %20 off. Blank media, desktops, laptops, TVs, everything.
For some reason their system wouldn't allow me to return the device (something to do with the stores closing), so instead they I asked them to replace it with a bigger model (1.5 TB). With the discount, I basically got me an extra 500 GB for a difference of $37 :D !
So I highly recommend anybody who's a little short on blank media, or want to find a good deal on just about any PC accessory to give 'em a try.
I know I have :D !!!
pedrojunkie 03-02-07, 11:15 PM I went down there and the deals were okay, but not liquidation good... 20% off DVD's most else were 10% off, anything real big ticket (tv's, pcs, laptops) was 5-10%, the apple section looked like it was still price protected most of that wasn't discounted... They said the liquidation sale will get better as the time goes on but the big ticket items will probrably be shipped to the stores that are remaining open rather than taking a big loss, and the good dvds won't last through to the next round of discounts. Theres no official 'end date' announced yet to the store closing right now at least that they were willing to make public to their employees.
20% off most of the HD titles they had left were pretty much Amazon prices, ~20-25 for most Blu-Ray releases, mostly only release titles XXX, the Saw trilogy, Terminator, Into the Blue, First Blood, Fifth Element, Stealth a few select HD DVD, Departed, Superman Returns, Phantom of the Opera
Of course the store near you will vary
cawgijoe 03-03-07, 09:55 AM Got First Blood for $20 last night. Selection was limited.

Just FYI that is Walmarts regular price for the First Blood BD as long as young guns, reservoir dogs, and american psycho. 19.96 each.

Hmm, i've never felt that way when i've gone in. I've always enjoyed the atmoshphere myself and liked the customer service, but i also know that not every store is the same even if they want it to be. I also must say i've never actually gone in to buy anything, only look at stuff. I always buy from their only store, but that's because i get an education discount which, at least in the past, they don't offer in the stores. Have you ever let them know how you feel? I think apple takes opinions of customrs very seriously.
tracemhunter 03-03-07, 05:05 PM I have always been treated nicely when I go into the mac store, I can't say that about CompUSA. Every time I go into CompUSA, a million jerkoffs ask me if they can help me. However, at the Mac store, only one person at the front door asks me, which is acceptable to me. If I need help... I'll ask. I don't like to be bothered while I am shopping.

The Wallmarts in my area carry very few BD discs. They are locked in a cabinet and the last time I was there, the only title they had was the X-Men title.
So the few pennies savings does me no good.
MrD1sturbed 03-03-07, 08:33 PM Picked up The 5th Element & Into The Blue BD and The Last Samurai HD-DVD from the KOP store. Every title they had was 20% off. The rest of the sales sucked though.

everyone is different. some people really want to be asked.
ThumperII 03-03-07, 11:40 PM This is great news!!! Since everyone on the forum is tripping over PS3s in every store they walk into, I should be able to get a great deal on a 60gb soon!!!!!!!
Have you been in those stores? Pretty much the height of snobbery. As soon as I walked in, I wanted out.
I never got this impression. I hope you just got a bad apple.
Anyway, anyone have a list of some of the discs CompUSA has had when they've been? I might like to drop by for a couple specific discs.
