View Full Version : Is Conan (non-mmo) an answer to God of War?

There really isn't any God of War equivalant games on the Xbox 360! I almost wish someone would make a knock-off that borders on intellectual theft. :) Something like, a Roman soldier named "Sotark" sets out to "Change his karma"?

Thoughts on both topics?

Conan was in a game a long time ago, but it was called Rastan and it was fantastic

No, it isn't an answer to God Of War. You can't compete with God Of War, or even attempt to create a clone. God Of War is simply amazing. The fact that you could even THINK of cloning it is blasphemy.

And Mario was a continuation of Donkey Kong which was an answer to Space Panic.

But but but... I can't play God of War on my beautiful Xbox 360, which means I have actually purchased God of War II and will have to spend an overnight session playing with my "Playstation fanboy" friends when it's released.

I don't want to have to spend $130 on a PS2 for 2 games! Well, I guess it could be worse, it's not like we have to spend $600 to get a PS3 to play them. Heh heh.

If you want to play the game you have to get the system. Go where the games are my friend. Don't accept cheap imitations.

That aside, I have no idea if this Conan game will actually be good. I guess that maybe it has potential...but I'm going to reserve all judgement until we actually get more info on it. As a rule any game that had anything to do with or was in some way connected to Arnold finds some way to be bad.

There are now two Conan games, the newly announced one is a God of War clone, it's for the PS3 and 360.

LMAO @ answer to God of War II ... like IGN said ... probably the best action video game ever made.

No fanboy here ... I own 360 and PS3.

I remember when people said there was no way GOW could compete with DMC and Ninja Gaiden, look where those baseless statements got us and how quickly those who said them were eating Crow. Here is something that has historically been proven numerous times in gaming, any game at any time can be surpassed by the most unlikely of prospects. If you go to IGN, they have a video of Conan in action and it looks like it could compete with GOPW2 to me easily.

I seriously doubt it. Ninja Gaiden is just so overly hard. Good, but overly hard. I think it detracts from the overall game it is just that difficult

I thought the difficulty in NG was way overblown, maybe its because I,ve been gaming for damn near 28 years, but compared to games like Garies, Musha, Super Ghouls and Ghost, Battletoads, etc that I was beating back when I was around 12 I thought NG was easier than any of those classics. I seriously think the main issue with games like NG, is that gamers have had a serious lapse in actual skill compared to what we had in the 80'3-early 90's because games are so watered down and easy now.

I admit I'm very biased (have loved the NG series for many, many years) and I haven't played God of War that much but imho God of War wasn't better than the xbox 1 version of NG. I too think the difficulty 'issues' raised by some were way overblown. NG games always make you 'sweat' a little.

Well the game play footage on gametrailers was eeriely God of War like.
At least the first part was pretty much like Deja Vu.

- LOL. I was actually thinking the same thing. I didn't think Ninja Gaiden was hard at all. The only game I can think of on the PS2 that had any difficulty was Shinobi. The game itself wasn't particularly difficult, but the last boss almost made me throw my controller at the screen. Which is particularly bad, because I haven't felt that way since Blaster Master.

Like a smart poster posted above. If you wanna play the game ... then get the system. I bought a Gamecube just to play Smash. It was the only game I owned for that system. I rent a few other games just to play with my friends but if you wanna play exclusives get the system. I would never settle for a knock off. Its like going out and looking for the Halo equivalent. Come on seriously.

That shouldn't be hard considering God of War wasn't as good as Ninja Gaiden. Sure it was loads of fun, but was severely lacking in any kind of combat depth.

I thought the final boss was easy. In my opinion Alma was the hardest boss. The first time you meet her not the second time of course.

In terms of gameplay, to me it looks like Prince of Persia is the closest Xbox game, especially the Two Thrones, where the main guy even has a blade that extends out his arm! But alas, Two Thrones is not backwards compatible, only Sands of Time.

Well, I did the math, and in order to purchase God of War I and II, it would cost me roughly $250 for console, games, and cables, which splits out to be $125 per game. Shew! ... I'm seriously considering it though. I mean, $125 is only twice the cost of one Xbox 360 game right? :)

Why not just borrow or rent a PS2 if you are only doing for GoW2? The gameplay is probably under 20 hours.

Sloth I feel you on Rastan, that game ruled my world for quite a while. Heck it was even good on the Master System. Gimme that and Wonderboy III (itself a sequel to a Mario wannabe) and I'm good to go.

i beat ninja gaiden no problem.. i dont see what the problem is and what people are boasting about it's difficulty for.. it was a great game.. not easy.. but not hard either.. just average. :)

Some people find NG hard due to the fact they cannot mash and win. Coming off DMC and God of War you would certainly find NG HARD. Its like playing a fighting game char in an action game. You need to learn the moves and use the right ones (And blocking is very important) at the right times. It requires more thought than any other action game out there, so yeah its going to appear hard to anyone who just picks it up and wants to smash the attack button or two and progress.

I... I just don't understand. You guys seriously thought Ninja Gaiden was EASY? I nearly broke my controller trying to beat that Alma lady and never got it done! Maybe I am not the best gamer on here after all

FrankJ.Cone

There are two cheap bosses that make folks think NG is hard: The Mounted Fellow and Alma. Both require you to get the hell out of the way! With Alma you need to wear her down getting your hits in when you can and most importantly not getting hit yourself.

If you focus on avoiding her massive attacks and only attacking when you are sure your going to get away unscathed you should be ok.

big article on gamespy (sorry no link!) about this conan game. I think it has potential, but you never know. Why the interest in Conan all of a sudden by game developers? Guess they saw god of war and saw $$$. MMORPG conan game has serious potential to be special I truly believe that. I just don't want to have to pay a monthly fee here. By the way, Ninja Gaiden IS a hard game. You all need to find employment if you think that one was easy :p

It's worth it because I'm pretty sure that after you've played the first one you'll want to continue on with the second. I see it kind of like Gears of War. It doesn't really do anything too new, it just does everything really really really well.

I agree completely. Both GOW's (Gears vs God sheesh) evoke a similar emotional response from me when I play them... a kind of "This surpasses anything I ever dreamed about as a child"... a sense of both awe, and sheer giddy joy that can barely be contained.

God of War in particular impresses me BECAUSE of the platform it's on. It is a technilogical programming MARVEL. No other Playstation 2 game comes close to the realistic, dark, shadowy feel of God of War. If they were next gen titles, it wouldn't be as big of a deal, but they are not. I've decided that perhaps Sony programmers resorted to black magic in order to get that level of performance from a 300Mhz processor. Simply insane.

And it really makes you wonder what these new consoles are really capable of, what kind of untapped potential do they hold? For us Xbox boys, Gears of War has been our first taste of that untapped potential. It makes it harder on developers because there is so much art involved. Piling on polygons doth not realism make. But bump mapping, correct lighting and texture simulations... /drool.

After all that to go off topic, Halo 3 has an incredibly high mark it has to aim for... I hope Microsoft pulls some aces out of its sleeves to beutify it.

Peace,

I never owned the PS2 so I never got to try God of War out. IF I ever pick up a PS3 I'll make sure to back and revisit that title. Ninja Gaiden to me was the best game I played last generation---hard as hell but I was thankful for that. I love challenging games---there were points, especially with Alma, that I wouldn't play the game for a week or two because I was so pissed and couldn't pass a part. The gameplay was so good, I always went back for more.

I don't mind dying over and over trying to get passed a boss. BUT, what I REALLY CAN'T STAND, is a save point that is a 2 minute run from the boss, or a save point that is a cut scene or conversation away from the boss, so that in order to get back to the boss I have to sit around bored for 5 minutes before I confront the boss that then kills me in 30 seconds.

I hate that.
