View Full Version : Are we getting the BD shaft?
2husky1 03-02-07, 05:25 PM Does anyone else feel like we are getting shafted on the poor release titles coming out on BD. Where are all the BLOCKBUSTER MOVIES that we all love? What are the studios reasons for holding out. If they are to promote BD and HD DVD for that matter, why not release those classic titles we enjoy watching over and over again. Would that not help sales of hardware and software too. Just like to get others impressions and comments on this.
It's been talked about -- it's the same reasons we didn't see all the back catalog blockbusters immediately when DVD was still gaining popularity.
Studios don't like putting their highest profile titles out right away, as the install base is too small to make much profit (and since release week is generally where a majority of the sales come from, they don't want to sacrifice the title just for format adoption -- they make money on DVD still).
It's a juggling act. Slowly we'll see the blockbusters come, but some will take a few years even.
Nope--couldn't disagree more. There are an incredible amount of quality titles coming out IMHO. I remember the early days of DVD and this is light years better.

How could you possibly feel "shafted" by Blu-ray. We have quite a few Blockbusters coming out between now and June. Some of these include:
Casino Royale
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Master & Commander
Cars
Con Air
Crimson Tide
The Rock
Platoon
Predator
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Rocky Balboa
Gangs Of New York
Pursuit of Happyness
Dances With Wolves
Night at the Museum
Cast Away
Independence Day
I, Robot
Donnie Brasco
Dirty Dancing
Edward Scissorhands
Ronin
To me there are GREAT movies on this list considering they will be released in less then 100 days. Certainly a much more impressive list then that of HD-DVD.

rlsmith 03-02-07, 06:43 PM Formats are built with NEW TITLES day-and-date and quality releases. Customers need to get into the habit of buying the new format.
The blockbusters of the past do not play the significant role that people think they do. The studios are well advised to keep titles like Star Wars until there is a critical mass and then to make a serious marketing effort. Just releasing these titles doesn't build the format to the extent that people think.
i was lukewarm to early adoption until I learned about all the awesome titles coming out this year on BR. Since then this forum has been my most popular and I bought my PS3 last week. Shafted? Not a chance.

NEW TITLES and quality releases. Talledega Nights, Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, Dude, Where's My Car. Quality releases? Don't get me wrong. I am fully supporting the format. I currently own 30 titles. But buying titles purely for PQ and AQ, as many on this forum are currently doing, wears thin after a while. It seems to me that a lot of titles being released are ones that bombed at the box office and the studios are releasing them to recoup revenues. I think many are looking for just that, Quality releases.

I own a HD DVD only at this time... But I see 15 movies on the list that I like. That is to show that I am unbiased and call it the way I see it. But to also throw a curve ball in here, you are my least favorite poster in this whatever you call it we are in the middle of here at AVS, yeah again calling it like I read it. :)
LOL..With your thread I thought you talking about shaft the movie on bd..anybody else wanna see some blaxploitation on BD..I watched willie dynamite on universal hd and it looked good!
Sorry, off topic.
WriteSimple 03-02-07, 09:55 PM NEW TITLES and quality releases. I think all BD studios, even Warner and Paramount, are releasing new titles and quality releases.
But if quality you mean titles you love that are catalog titles, like Predator or Aliens, I believe that's not quite in the scheduled dates just yet. From Disney's and Sony's release list, I surmise that both studios have found out that people tend to buy new titles more than titles already out UNLESS it is a KNOWN blockbuster for a wide demographic - of which they would rightly delay the release.
Why rightly? Imagine releasing Finding Nemo now. It won't have the numbers to even decently compete against DVD.

I wouldn't, no reason to. That doesn't mean I wouldn't consider buying a BD, but no reason to sell a $200 add-on. FWIW the guy with both is the winner. Or the guy that never read any of this... yeah he's the real winner! Lol

Speaking of your example with Finding Nemo. Why do you feel they would have to compete? Two separate formats, just that much more of the overall pie.
Slim GoodBooty 03-02-07, 10:33 PM About 5 movies I'll buy, just like the HD-DVD list.

Not sure what your taste in movies is, but you have to realize that BR pretty much equals PS3 at this point in time, therefore that is the market they will want to target 1st. As far as we know, 8000 units moved in a month for a new release is considered a hit on HD optical, not exactly earth-shattering numbers to the movie studios who are used to sell well over a million DVDs of a good title in its first week.
When the market grows, so will the choice, until then, they have to release what they think will appeal to the BR audience, which consists mainly of pop-corn flicks. Not that there's anything wrong with those, it all depends on your personal taste.
hmurchison 03-02-07, 10:52 PM Hell no...you do have some crappy filler but man Casino Royale, Cars and PotC series are some studly efforts coming.
I'm green with envy. Don't know how long I can... hold ...out.
Rachael Bellomy 03-02-07, 11:20 PM Imagine releasing Finding Nemo now. It won't have the numbers to even decently compete against DVD.
Yeah, but it'd be easy because you'd only have to press 10,000 to blanket the puny markets.
Why isn't this thread just pointed at Fox? They're the worst of the lot, IMO. Besides they charge the most per pound too for golden oldies. ;) Atleast Uni has an excuse, they had no hitz....just a big monkey on welfare.... ;)

I am sorry I am your least favorite poster here. To throw a curveball your way, I actually like the majority of your posts and I think you are a good contributor to AVS. I do encourage anyone, you, Murch, whomever to get a BD player and enjoy all HD content. I own an HD-A1. Most people that "roast" me do not know that. Anyway.

hmurchison 03-03-07, 12:58 AM Hey I admire tenacity. Josh must have come from a family of "loving arguers" . You know the telltale signs of thick skin and stubborn determinism.
Eventually we will all have access to ALL movies in HD. If that means HD DVD dies then that's the way the ball bounces. Toshiba has to play out their strategy and see where the chips fall.

Well geeze now I'll have to reconsider! lol That is how you make a strong comeback!!!
Hey you have valid points but damn if you don't jump on each and everything. IMO and believe me, there are many threads I'd like to jump in on and there are several I have written and just click "cancel" instead of "send" when that moment comes to post. We do have a problem, but we also are fighting human nature here to. It's like one of those life lessons, that if you talk too much you become one of the least heard. Again you have a lot of points and think (and believe me I'm just throwing out a suggestion) if you were more selective you'd be more effective.
I'll own a PS3 before it's over unless something completely blows up in their face, as I'm a game player to. It just needs more games I want before making the buy and whenever I get excited about something I slow myself down, patience is how I try to operate over here. A PS3 does cost enough when you start to add up everything so Christmas imo makes a lot of sense to me as a family buy. I just got the 360 this past Christmas and just have been blown away, the HD DVD player has done me well to and the content at this time I'm content with. Till the PS3 shows me that synergistic game/BD player that is no longer deniable, I will buy it and then I will buy a couple BD's and put a lot in my que!
Anyways that was still a strong comeback and now I can’t cyber-hate you anymore. Damn you!

Thanks Horror :) I will admit I probably should not participate in as many threads, but you are correct, it is VERY difficult to fight human nature when it comes to these sorts of issues. Anyway, thanks to you and Murch and others for being among the best contributors to AVS. Heck, I might even send each of you guys a Blu-ray player for free. Lets see how this month works out financially with the business.

Yeah, this argument about not having good releases should be in the HD-DVD section. Wait a minute..it already is..

LOL :) That meager upcoming list of films is going to bolster Blu-Ray way past a 2 to 1 lead over HD-DVD. Especially with the list below that isn't 100% official.
HD-DVD list for 100 days from now...
March - ?
April - The Good Shepherd, Smokin' Aces, The Game, The Jerk, The Hitcher, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Nutty Professor
May - Alpha Dog, The 40-Year-Old Virgin: Unrated, Smokey and the Bandit, Hurricane, Skeleton Key, The River, Midnight Run, The Frighteners, The Big Lebowski, Dragonheart, Lost in Translation
June - Breach, Bruce Almighty, Liar Liar, Sneakers, Born on the 4th of July, Scent of a Women, Daylight, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, Meet Joe Black, Mallrats, Being John Malkovich, Mystery Men, American Me, The Watcher, Bulletproof
June is past 100 days but I still have to throw it in there to give them some hope.
HD-DVD has a lot to look foreward to the next 100 days... long Borat pause.. Not!!!

A good list and several that I will purchase, but there is a bit of a disparity between 'announced' and 'released' :p. Let's see when we can actually buy the titles on the list.

As did I... at this point, I'm unwilling to own a HD DVD player to simply support Universal. If they want my money, they had better start releasing Blu-ray discs.
KidNiki 03-04-07, 08:37 AM WTF are you talking about? I mean there are not to many recent BLOCK BUSTERS out there and what we have on Blue Ray is pretty darn good. There is a serious drought right now on HD-DVD, and later in the year it will go away (as far as I'm concerned) but BD is pretty strong at the moment. If with everything out and coming out you can not find something you like then you just don't like movies, and probably fail at the point of HD movies. Also, if you compare HD movies as a whole to DVD back in the day, OH MY GOSH IS IT SO MUCH BETTER! :)
theforce8686 03-04-07, 03:27 PM Oh man, I guess I misread the thread title. I was hoping we were getting the movie Shaft, with Sam Jackson. Oh well. Im sure we will get it eventually.

EXACTLY.
Supporting Universal is what keeps us from ONE format.
If support drops, they will start releasing BD.
Nothing personal...it's just business, folks.

I agree which is why I returned my HD-A2 after it starting giving me issues not bothering to get another one. I'm staying with Blu-ray.
