View Full Version : G90 Cold Start V-Sync Issue

When I turn my projector on after its been off for a long time it has a little bit of a rough start. It appears that there is something not right with the vertical sync or vertical hold that takes a few moments to warm up and stabilize.

When I first turn it on the all white warmup screen (which is set to just go for a minute and usually dismiss anyway) blinks and the text appears to jump in vertical position every second or so. If I bring up the menu, the text jumps in position with the same frequency.

If there is an external input that signal appears to roll vertically and then snap into sync at the same time the on screen menu text jumps. But the behavior is the same regardless of whether there is an external signal or not, or what resolution/refresh rate that external signal is.

After a few minutes (usually less than five) the frequency of the pop/roll slows down, the external image stays sync'd and all appears to be well after that for the rest of the time the unit is on. If I turn it off for a few minutes and turn it back on, it comes up solid. It seems to need to be cold for the phenomenon to present itself. But I'm in southern california, so "cold" really means the low-mid 60's.

Its done this to me since the very first time I turned it on, and although it does not seem to be getting any worse it leaves me with a sick sinking feeling in my stomach. The previous owner tells me he's never seen this behavior, so my hunch is something either got jostled in transit or there is something about the temperature/barometric pressure/humidity/sunspots/whatever thats different in my environment from where it was before.

I've gone through the normal steps of removing and re-seating all the major boards, checking the connections on the neck boards and HV leads. Nothing seemed obviously loose or damaged, and re-seating everything has not changed the behavior.

My hunch is that it is something on the DA Board that is just slightly out of adjustment for the VSync and as it warms up gets more tolerant. But I'm curious if anyone has seen this behavior before and/or has suggestions on how to go about isolating the source of the problem.

I've made a couple little movies to show the phenomenon probably better than I can describe it with words. The dark fast moving thick horizontal band you see in the video is coming from the camera - in person you don't see it.

Right click on the links and save the file to your system, then open it. For some reason media player thinks its trying to stream the avi file if you just click on the link.

The startup screen pops in position, the signal from the pc rolls after each pop.

Closeup of the menu twitch with the pc image rolling behind it.

As it settles down the magnitude of the twitch and frequency both seem to decrease together and then its stable.

My next step is to pack up most of the boards and send them off to get checked out. But if anyone has experience with this issue and/or suggestions on what I can try on my own, I'd love to hear about it!
Please help me.

Kris

People have reported that they cant get the movie files to play. It seems like if you have windows media player setup for AVI files it tries to stream them when you just click on the link and nothing happens. So if it doesnt work for you, try right clicking and save the file locally then click on it after it downloads to play. Sigh...

The problem has been resolved. I did end up packing the boards and sending them off to Terry, who was able to diagnose and fix it.

It appears that someone had messed with the V-Hold adjustment on the DA board (RV102). The pot had been chewed up a little, looking like someone had used a metal philips head screwdriver rather than a plastic adjustment tool.

Terry re-adjusted it for me and now the projector syncs up solid right from the get-go. And switching from one input to another the new signal snaps right into sync rather than rolling into position.

I would like to thank the people who did PM me with suggestions, but it does seem kind of sad that there was more communication off line than on the thread. But at least it has been resolved.

I'm glad to hear the issue has been resolved Kris. In my case the switch on V sync had been flipped by the previous owner. I'm just wondering if the pot moved a litte as I had never seen it roll while I owned it.

How close are you to having your theater done? I'm dead in the water do too a ton of travel.
