View Full Version : Please help with purchase of new HDTV
Obi Kwiet 03-02-07, 06:35 PM Hello all,
I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this question as I am new. I hope you guys and gals can help out me though.
I am in the market for a new HDTV that will be used primarily for gaming. I hope you can help me narrow down the choices as the current amount of HDTV's on the market is staggering to me.
I will be primarily using the HDTV to play games on the 360, PS3, and the Wii. I will also be using it to watch TV (obviously). I would also like to be able to hook it up to my PC if so desired. I am not opposed to any kind of HDTV (Plasma, DLP, LCD) as long as the price is reasonable compared to the image quality.
The TV will sit in a room that is lit primarily from the right side (but I will most likely be playing and watching in the dark). For the most part, I will be sitting directly in front of it (but it would be good if I had a TV that was viewable from all angles with decent image quality).
I would also like a TV that has a good refresh rate (response time, whatever the correct terminology is) for playing games.
Thanks in advance, I look forward to hearing your responses,
Obi Kwiet

C'mon people. Please?!!!!
oilisgold 03-03-07, 11:38 PM $5,000 will get you whatever you want, almost literally. I have an Olevia 32" LCD (232V). I love it, and it cost $600.
Since you have a much bigger budget, you can go with something more sophisticated, obviously. My brother-in-law has a 120" Sony projector in his basement, and it is gorgeous, so if you have the room I would personally recommend something like that.
I would offer more advice but I am not kidding when I say you can get almost anything for $5,000. The only question is whether you need to spend that much to get what you want.
Obi Kwiet 03-04-07, 06:15 AM OK, budget removed. I am looking for a tv that will meet aforementioned criteria, any suggestions?
mindoculus 03-04-07, 10:42 AM you can try the new 120mhz Sharp D92U (52 incher).
How about this year or last's Sony SXRD ?
Or Sony's new Bravia XB3 line ? The 46 incher has 1080P, 8ms response, and 7000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.
But for 5000.00, you may want to hold off until the summer or early next year when more of the advancements that were featured at this year's CES come to market, particualrly the Pioneer's new plasma and probably the OLED.
the difference between everything that is on the shelves now and what will soon appear seems to be . . 'noticeable'. ;)
Trebuken 03-04-07, 05:47 PM What sort of size do you want?
I would second the Sharp, but would probably go with th 42". More cost effective, espeacially with the thought of the new technologies that are coming.
I have a 72" Toshiba DLP and am very happy with it. There are sets with a better picture, but the extra size gives the Toshiba an added punch. My 360 looks fantastic on it, while my PS3 is soso ntil the firmware updates are in line.
Playing Wii golf on a large DLP is pretty wild...
Obi Kwiet 03-06-07, 11:36 PM What sort of size do you want?
52"-56".
I am most impressed with what I have read about the 52D92U so far. The only thing that concerns me is talk of "banding". Should I be concerned about that or not? I am sorry if that is a stupid question, I dont know alot about HDTV's.
I have also looked at the Sony Bravia 52" XBR, how would the viewing angles be on that TV? The other two TV's I have looked at are the Samsung HL-S5679W, and the Pioneer Elites (but those seemed a little pricey compared to the Sony and the Sharp). How would the viewing angles on the Samsung be and how can I tell the response time (I tried posting links but couldn't).
I actually think the DLP is lowest on my list right now as it has the lowest contrast ratio. The Sony and the Sharp seem to be pretty close price wise and feature wise. I think I will go take a look at some stores tomorrow. What do you guys think?
Thanks for your help!
Trebuken 03-07-07, 07:02 PM I have never seen the Samsung, but it gets great user reviews. There are some complaints about black levels, and it seems to require a good deal of tweeking to get the best image.
You can't go wrong with any of these choices. The Bravia is looking good to me after checking it out.
The 70" Bravia would be nice....did I read that price correctly, $32,999?
poohead 03-08-07, 04:59 AM If you can get a Sony x series without the cloud issues (search if you aren't sure what I mean - alot of info around...) I would get one - especially for gaming. I have had one for just over a month now, and although I have some cloud problems (which will be addressed via replacement) it is a very impressive gaming screen IMO. Great colour, wide variety of connection options, quick response... and a few of those other game friendly goodnesses.
Never been the biggest Sony fan in the past, but it is an impressive gaming device. I have the KDL46X2000 which I think in the US is known as an XBR2 or XBR3.
I love my 52xbr3.

Seems like the clouding issues are limited to the 40" and 46". Has anyone heard of clouding issues on the 52"?
The Sony is my primary focus now. Once I am confident the set probably wont have any issues, I'm sold.
ValkyrieStation 03-11-07, 07:34 PM It's possible to get clouds on a 52.

Thats comforting. I hope mine doesn't have them. It should be arriving in 7-10 days. :)
