Hi Folks:
Last night the image died on my Marquee 8500, and I now noticed a strange choppy whirring sound (not that loud) that appears to come from the LVPS. I still get the green light at the back of the unit.

I plugged the projector off, plugged it in again and I get the LVPS fans going, and it sounds normal. Then when I hit the 'power' button on the remote I hear what sounds like typical initialization, although I never get the tubes lit up and I don't hear that 'crackle' that I normally hear before the tubes light up. Then (only after I pressed power) do I hear the slight whirring sound that appears to be coming from LVPS.

Any ideas on what may be amis? I only recently replaced my LVPS (about two months ago) as the last one died.

Any advice or guidance would be great!!

Hi, I'm not sure what is causing the whirring sound. That can't be good. But an easy "try" would be to remove the LVPS and HVPS and clean the contacts, then put them back in and try again. This has been a fix for me in various situations.

While you have the LVPS out, go ahead and open it's lid and check for any obvious signs of burned components or popped fuses. It's only three or four screws, then lift the cover just a tad and reach your hand in to unplug a couple of wire connectors that prevent you from opening the cover all the way. Very easy.

If it's a bad LVPS then you're in luck. You can either send it to Curt Palme to be fixed, or you'll find that it's a fairly cheap part to replace on the used market. Myself and several others have used LVPS laying around for $50-$200 on the average.

The HVPS is another matter and definately more expensive and needs to be matched somewhat.

Hi CZ Eddie:
Thanks for the good advice. I'll try your suggestion and see how it goes.

Thanks!

Hello

Look into the back of each tube and confirm that the filaments glow orange; a dark tube may have suffered a crack. Look with a light into each lens, check for weirdness. Pull the right side covers off (power cord side) and check the molex connections with a voltmeter for power on each connection so marked. If all is good then the HVPS is the next suspect, I have those here.
