Just purchased a new plasma and I'm totally lost on what to do regarding an HD DVR. I currently have a directv setup with a beloved Tivo dvr but I've heard nothing but horror stories regarding their new HD DVRs (and their HD product in general).

Is there any consensus on the best route to go for HD DVR/Cable-Sat. service. Is there an faq or something someone can direct me to?

Compare different offers from DirecTV, DISH Network (offers by far the most HD content, but some of it is compressed), Verizon Fios (if it's available in your area) and your local cable company.

The new DirecTV HR20-700 HD DVR is actually one of your best alternatives to provider leased HD DVR equipment, as the most common cable and Fios HD DVR solutions seem to suffer many more bugs and discomforts than those provided by the Satellite providers. The DISH Vip 622, as far as i've seen, has probably the least amount of complaints towards it and arguably the most features, however i would say from what i've read lately, the new HR20-700 from D* follows closely behind, with cable boxes like the Moxi, and Moto DCT and SA boxes lagging behind. It's really preference, but compare service options and read reviews on the different HD DVR's you would be provided with through the different operators and make your choice.

All of these devices and providers have their own share of problems and quirks, so decide what features, options, and services are important to YOU, and make your decision based on that.

No problem. Also, if you REALLY like the Tivo interface that much, you can still pick up a D* HR10-250 HD DVR with Tivo at select retailers, internet stores, and i've seen PLENTY on ebay. The only problem with this unit is that while D* currently continues support for this unit, it is an MPEG-2 only box, meaning that it will be obsolete as D* transitions to MPEG-4 broadcasts, however i don't have a time frame as to when support for the HD Tivo will be officially dropped.
