I can, but will slow things down? My modem/router is upstairs, my HT and xbox 360 is downstairs. What are my options? Do I run cat 5 from upstairs to the HT or is there any other way to get my Xbox connected to Live?

thanks

Bill

how f'n big is your house? I'm sure you could cut it down to a quarter of that length if you could run the wire through a couple walls. Anyways at that length the biggest variable will be shielding on the wire. Just don't expect to get the most out of your router at that length.

Please. 200ft is fine. Cat 5 is good to 328ft.

You could use the ms wireless adapter.

My house is 5200 sq ft. My office upstairs is on the opposite side of the house than my HT. I am going down thru the floor and run cable above the tiles in the ceiling.

Thanks for the replies.

True, and you could throw a dumb hub in the middle if you were concerned.

If you can run cable that's the way to go. Just get decent quality Cat 5e cable and you'll be fine. Wired is always better than wireless.

No issues and less hassle imo than wireless. Unless the new "n" series pans out.

Can ppl tell the difference between wireless and wired? I use a wireless Linksys router & adapter @60' away. I really can't tell the difference between that and when I hook it up directly to the router. = wireless or wired. I'm thinking of buying a new modem and going direct to the xbox if it really could make a differnce.= the comparison. That being said wireless is really easy once you figure it out. The only reason I want to go wired since I can't tell the speed difference is the microwave shuts me down. But nobody uses it unless I'm in a good Gears of war match and I'm actually winning:(

Wireless is fine if you get a good router like a Belkin.

as long as no one tells you your lagging then wireless is cool. bad thing with wireless can be if something goes wrong then you have to go to the source (if its away like his would be) to reset.

I'd go cable though if its not a hassle. my 360 is up and computer is down so I ran a wire up and over since I had nothing wireless at the time.

go cable. wireless works decent at best, no matter what router you choose.

and yes 200 feet is fine. cat5 is good for 100m (or about 328ft like 5150 said).

i'm actually running over 100m, about 350 feet with shielded monster cable cat5e

I'm running 50 ft of CAT 5e with no issues. Rock solid.

Thats what ppl say but when I run a direct wire connection 3 feet ethernet to my router it plays the same. You would think there would be a noticable difference?? Dunno maybe I'll hook my modem up for a 16hr marathon see if my rank goes up :)

a lot of it depends on what you're doing and if you're in game, whats going on.

i know for me, streaming and transcoding high definition media files, over wireless, that takes forever, and i always get the "network congestion" error in media center.... over cable everything is flawless.
