You know its odd…just bit the bullet on a hdd2 from Costco, I’ve been meaning to get one but as usual, I kept putting off the decision due to the FUD that lives here there and everywhere. Even considered an XA2 that they let me play with at Fry’s although my older DLP really only takes a 1080p signal at less than full screen. I guess Costco is the last bastion of the risk averse.
Watched Babel to see what Iñárritu would do after having one of my kids getting me to watch a ripped copy of Amores Perros. Watched Departed to see if Scorcese has matured. Watched the godawful Criterion version of Seven Samurai on DVD.
A couple of observations:
HD is enjoyable…but as we used to say in the 80’s when discussing networking technologies, what passes for discussion at times here is highly reminiscent of the 8th and 9th layers of the OSI stack; the political and the religious. You will notice I didn’t say HDDVD or BD…HD is enjoyable.
Babel was excellent, Scorcese hasn’t grown up yet. And the godawful Criterion version of Seven Samurai is still godawful, but probably the best story of the bunch.
The audio is better, the video is better, but it is still effectively telling a story that creates value.
Maybe I’m a fool. But I’ve always enjoyed seeing what technology could do, so I guess the Toshiba will stay. The way I look at it, for less that 500 out the door, I can see if Netflix performs as well in the next month as it does in the first.
