View Full Version : Blue LED Rope Lighting
Seafighter 03-04-07, 01:49 PM Can anyone point me towards some sources with good pricing on LED Rope lighting. I'm looking for blue that can be dimmed using X-10. Any words of wisdom on brightness, diameter etc? I want it for the soffit, stage and riser. I've read thru previous posts on the subject but was wondering if anyone had any recent thoughts or revelations.
Home Depot sells rope lighting in different colors for cheap. I believe they can be dimmed.
Patrick C 03-04-07, 08:08 PM Yep. That's where I got mine. It dims just fine. It's fairly warm to the thouch. Also, you will want to be very careful that it's not to close to the floor or wall or you will see the reflection of indiviual bulbs rather than a continuous glow. I was also able to cut the rope light from HD without a problem.
You may want to look at the halogen rope light which now available for just a little bit more. It has a much different glow than the incadescent stuff that's pretty cool. Target carries it.
Seafighter 03-05-07, 07:40 AM I would think halogen would be hotter. Has anyone tried it yet?
Cherokee180c 03-05-07, 05:54 PM Are you talking about the Hampton Bay stuff at HD? I am pretty sure that is incandescent and not LED. I am also looking for a good source of affordable LED rope light.
JohnVan 03-05-07, 08:03 PM For an inexpensive led rope lite, Costo has a 25ft clear for about $25.00, for a really nice
blue led rope lite ebay seller ledadvantage has a 25 ft one for about $60.00. Both of these
dimmed nicely on my Graphic eye.
chinadog 03-05-07, 09:00 PM I bought mine from noveltylights.com. I bought a roll of 150 feet in the frosted incandescent stuff and it can be cut every 18 inches. It was about 100.00 after shipping. You can also buy custom lengths. I used about 40ish in my HT room, then used about 30 feet in each of my three poster light boxes. The rest of it I'll use in my mini mylar box that I'm building now. Now I'm thinking about going blue in the HT room and using the 40 feet left over in a marquee I'll build.

I saw the Costco stuff the other day, but can you add onto the costco LED light to extend the length? I need around 38'.

Yes you can. I have two 25ft of the Costco LED lights connected. I believe it is .87 watts per foot. The nice thing about the LED that I like is it is cool to the touch. However, it does have a cool (as in color temp) blue hue to it. I previously bought a 150 foot spool of incandescent rope light that turned brown and broke down badly. It was pure junk. I think I had a UL recalled type.
dc_pilgrim 03-06-07, 09:02 AM How bright are these LED rope lights?
The reason I ask is I am looking at some under counter halogens in place of cans. They are pretty tight in there spot, I am looking at alternatives also. Anyways, I will have a couple of cans in the ceiling, but I really only want to use those for clean up. I expect the rope is mostly for effect, but I wonder how much light it puts out, and if that will help add incrementally.
How does the dimming with the grafik eye work? I have a 3104 uninstalled, do I need to specify anything in particular to electrician?
HeyNow^ 03-06-07, 09:22 AM They are pretty bright. Much brighter than my regular rope. I am using a Lutron lamp dimmer on the string. One problem that exists is that depending on where you slide the dimmer, the lights can pulse on low and high. Adjusting the dimmer eliminates this. One thing for sure, they have a very blue hue (cool) to them compared to my old incandencent rope. Mixing incandescent light and these rope lights may not look very good.
Borntobe 03-06-07, 10:40 AM I purchased my blue rope light from here:

It's 120v, 1/2" diameter and may be purchased by the foot. I have it hooked up to a Lutron 3104. A plastic track is also available for rope installation which allows for even light distribution. See attached photos.
dc_pilgrim 03-06-07, 10:42 AM Thanks Randy. Brightness isn't a bad thing, as long as they can dim. I figure I can set a scene where they are pretty bright for settling in, then dim down for viewing. Makes it so that the directionality of the soffit lights isn't a problem, and can be used as a lighting effect to emphize the walls (which is the idea).

Not sure if I 100% need to be above 40 watts or if I can cheat down a bit with my dimmer. What happens generally if you do not have the required wattage on a dimmer, does it just work poorly, or is there any other safety issue?

Borntobe,
You are THE MAN!!!!! That looks awesome. I have been bugging DC for a link to somebody else who did the crown molding below the ceiling trick and you nailed it!!! I was going to get white, but your post has me thinking blue now all the way!!! Do you have pictures of your theater on a site to view somewhere? I am doing a very similar color scheme and would like to see better detailed pictures on your paint job and trim work!!! I also live just north of Baltimore if you ever want to show off your handywork before I finish my theater construction.
Do you know the wattage of those lights?
I have not got mine yet but did some research a few weeks ago and found these sites

Seafighter 03-07-07, 06:01 PM Has anyone used the rope from CCL-Light? Very low price and looks like it would be x-10 dimmable.

Since you have it on a LGE, I assume its dimmable?

Same question. The price is so much less than the other places. Other than the cutting disclaimer it looks like a winner. Not sure how many watts per foot though.
Borntobe 03-08-07, 11:44 AM Cherokee180c - My pictures are only posted under a thread entitled "Dream Theater Finished - Thanks AVS". A search under my screen name "Borntobe" will get you there. The 120 volt, 1/2 " blue rope light I used are 5.52 watts per foot. The 12 volt model is 3 watts per foot.
Chinadog - Yes, they are dimmable.

what benefits does rope lighting add to a HT?
what benefits does rope lighting add to a HT?
Nothing really. Accent lighting. I don't turn mine on during a movie, but when I do it does look really cool.
Others prefer low-level lighting so it can be more than an aesthetic issue.
