Hi All,

(I originally sent this to the mythtv users list but got no response so I'm trying here in the hope that some of you gifted individuals will be able to give me some advice.)

I have recently been working on getting mythtv to output sound via Jack. I have
successfully got sound routed from Myhtv (and Amarok) into Jack and from there
to my soundcard. My long term aim is to do all sound processing on the
frontend box and remove the need for a surround sound processor. This will
allow me to perform digital room correction on the frontend box and not have to
spend a fortune on an AV processor that can do DRC.

However, I have no idea if it's possible to put a surround sound decoder
somewhere along the path from MythTV to the soundcard. At the moment I can
only listen to stereo sound from my recordings unless I engage the surround
sound processing in my AV processor. Is there a plugin I can use in MythTV or
Jack that will do Dolby Surround decoding?

Decoding Dolby/DTS 5.1 seems to be a different matter. I've read that Xine and
MPlayer can decode a 5.1 stream and route it to the sound card. I haven't
tried this personally yet, I'm concentrating on TV viewing at the moment.

My recordings are all via DVB-T in the UK and don't contain any 5.1 audio
streams, just plain stereo.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Hrm ...

I guess i don't quite understand what you are doing ... I Have a soundblaster live platinum w/ SPDIF and TOSLINK audio outs. My receiver is both DD and DTS capable. I have Myth setup to output all audio, digital and analog via SPDIf and get digital audio vid DD and DTS on the reciever.

So it's not that difficult to get digital audio via myth to a capable reciever. It's actually very well documented on the web as well. It's not perfect ... but it works.

EDIT: After re-reading what you asked ... i don't know if you can emulate Surround on myth ... i have my reciever emulate Pro-Logic on all analog content via SPDIF. It works decent.

Go to the alsa.opensrc org website, the page is /Playing_stereo_on_surround_sound_setup_(Howto)

To be honest, I didn't look too hard at this, nor do I know how to actually do it. I just know that this page describes how you can modify what sound goes to what speaker(s).

Hi,

I'm guessing you're trying to find something like this...

http://ac3filter.net/

Not sure if it works under linux though...Software such as this I think shows great promise for the htpc crowd, even meridian is using software to decode DD/DTS etc... Anyways, instead of searching for dolby digital decoder or similiar try searching for ac3 decoder instead and you'll find more possibilities.

Good luck,
Tristan
