I have a 1440x1080 or so Dish Mpeg4 file which after I've run it thru tsmuxer plays fine on my PS3 until it hits a glitch in the video stream.
That will hiccup when using MPC with core codec when running on a PC but after it hits the glitch on the disc, on the PS3, the audio is gone.
I can't seem to locate a program similar to videoredo for H264 files and I can't locate anything within Nero8 that will reencode this file either.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Larry
I don't know of any easy tool for mp4. You can scan the original .ts mp4 file with mpeg2repair, it only scans the audio track, but might find the exact time for the glitches. If there are only 1 or 2 found, then you can cut the file just before the glitch and just after using the splitting function in tsremux or tsMuxeR then rejoin the pieces using the append function of tsMuxeR. You will have a jump at these join points, but maybe the audio will still work. If it is something that is aired again, then a new recording might be easier.
As far as re-encoding goes I have used RipBot264 from Doom9 forums to re-encode to BluRay AVCHD format. Just be prepared for many hours of re-encode time.

The PS3 is fussy about compliant videos. Wish there was a tool like MPEG2Repair for MPEG4/AVC streams.

Anybody
Will PS3 play Blu-ray Rewritable 50GB Dual Layer and Blu-ray Write-Once 50GB Dual Layer Discs? They are very expensive and I want to find out before burning my SD home videos on them. BD burner MATSHITA BD-RE UJ-220 ATA on dell 1525 laptop.
Roxio creator premier blu-ray 10.1 which recommends BDAV RE format.
Is it mandatory to have 50GB free space to burn 50GB?

Yes, I've burned one 50GB Sony BD-R in my LG burner. It was an AVC movie w/o menus. Played fine on the PS3.
I have used a Panasonic BD-RE 50 successfully in the PS3 and Panasonic player (BD10).
thank you Brajesh and Phloyd. Is the free HDD space size of the BD a must requirement or a suggestion?

Hello, everyone.
Right now, I'm looking at the great guide of MozartMan.
This step by step guide is awesome!!
But I have some questions.
What I want to do is as follows.
I have HDV digital camcor (Canon HV30) and Blu-ray Player (PS3).
I want to edit my videos and add menus and chapters.
I want to burn it as a blu-ray disc (not as a data disc).
Then play it on my PS3.
But I wonder why making AVCHD over Blu-ray?
And what programs do I need? Ulead MF6+, Tsmuxer, VideoReDo and more??
I remember there were many problems about playing BDMV on PS3 at the beginning of this thread.
But I was away from this thread for a very very long time.
I guess you guys made it work finally!!

I'd think you'll need at least as much (if not more) free space on your hard drive to burn that amount of data to BD-R.
But I wonder why making AVCHD over Blu-ray?
If you're using BD-Rs, you don't need MozartMan's guide. His wonderful guide is for burning a Blu-ray structure w/menus on plain ol' DVD-Rs. The PS3 and BD players won't recognize a Blu-ray structure on anything but BD-Rs, so MozartMan's guide tricks the PS3 and BD players into thinking they're seeing an AVCHD structure and auto-playing it. AVCHD on DVD-Rs is allowed by Blu-ray spec.
And what programs do I need? Ulead MF6+, Tsmuxer, VideoReDo and more??
Since you have an HDV cam, not an AVCHD cam, your footage is MPEG2. You can use VideoRedo (MPEG2VCR is another option) to edit, then use your .mpg or .ts file to create a Blu-ray structure using MozartMan's guide on a regular DVD-R. If you don't need menus, it's even easier. See my sig for that guide.

Howdy,
I've been reading this thread from the beginning (has it been edited BTW, I see replies with posts I don't remember reading?) and it kind of reminds me about opening the wild west.
Anyway, I've only made it to page 33 so I've a ways to go yet, but I haven't seen this question posted.
Has anyone tried taking a 480 DV camcorder AVI file (about 12Gb for an hour) and doing a Blu Ray (on BD-R or BD-RE) yet? I can do DVD9's until the cows come home but it still compresses the file.
Would it even work?
I'm going to go back and see what happens in the next thrilling installment....

I was able to burn BD-RE 25 GB with no menu and it plays fine in ps3. But with menu I got format error after successfully encoding in Roxio MyDVDbluray. Maybe I need BD-R for menu bluray?
any advise on external fire wire hard drive or better to keep captured video for bluray. My Internal is 120GB and fills quickly in my 1525 laptop.

What is weird is, after the video comes to a finish, it starts right back up. Similar to being in continous play. Is this normal?
Or should video just stop?
Yes. This is how author of TSRemux programmed it.
Try tsMuxer: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=134104
So I finally get around to doing this. Using TSMuxer 1.84 on a different piece of video, but get the exact same result. Video gets to the end, and it loops back to the start. This is a no menu AVCHD.
What am I doing wrong?
And yes, title repeat is set to "off" on PS3

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I think TSRemux and tsMuxer programed the same way: video loops. It is probably because there is no menu.
When I author Blu-ray or AVCHD project in Ulead MF6+ I have options for the video:
Continue to the next video
Go back to the menu

Woo-hoo! Got it to work using a slight modification to Tom's method. Tried 4 different TS files that previously resulted in stutters w/o audio on the PS3. Now they all play perfectly. Tried DVD+RW, DVD+R SL and a DVD-R DL.
Here's my workflow, which is very similar to Tom's.
Take your hi-def capture and run it through VideoRedo (VRD). MPEG2VCR also works according to MozartMan, but I find VRD better. Cut out segments you don't want. Click 'Save As...' and choose 'Transport Stream (*.ts)' for output. Before this, if you haven't done so just once before, after you open VRD, click 'Tools', then while holding down the 'Shift' key, choose 'Options'. This gives you extra setup options. Find the line 'Add GOP Timecode to all GOPs' and enable it to 'True'.
Run your VRD-generated TS through Ulead DVD Movie Factory 6+ with their HD Power Pack (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Content/1190954650114) plug-in. It costs $20, but Google "ulead coupon" and you might find a 10% off coupon as I did. Start the Ulead launcher w/o any disc in your drive. Click 'New Video Project' button, then click 'OK' to choose your drive, then choose 'Blu-ray' with 'BDMV' option and click 'OK'. Once you're in, disable menu option and don't add any chapters.
Run your Ulead-generated M2TS file (in the BDMV/STREAM folder) through TSRemux v0.0.18 with the 'Blu-Ray' output option to another folder on your hard drive. Set chapter markers to however many minutes you want.
Delete 0001.m2ts from the TSRemux-generated BDMV/STREAM folder and copy over 0000.m2ts from the Ulead-generated BDMV/STREAM folder. Rename 0000.m2ts to 0001.m2ts.
Burn the TSRemux 'BDMV' and 'CERTIFICATE' folders to any DVD media with Nero 7 or 8. Make sure you choose 'DVD-ROM (UDF)', then under the 'UDF' tab, choose 'Manual settings' and 'Physical partition' with 'UDF 2.50'.
Perfect playback w/DD 2.0 or 5.1 audio on the PS3 with chapters and smooth forward/reverse scan. No menus, but I don't need them.
Brajesh, thanks for the guide!
However, as I am doing this I have a few questions.
What you are doing - does it reduce size of the file so it can fit on DVD9 DL and then be playable on stand alone BD ? That's what I am after, can you please help me. I have a .ts file from HD PVR and I would like to convert it to DVD9 DL without loosing too much quality - can I do that or it method that you are describing simply leaves 15GB file that you can copy to BD disc and then watch on Blu Ray stand alone player. I am confused a bit - perhaps I am lacking some details within your steps ???
Please help,

No, the process involves no re-encoding. To reduce size, you'll need to use an encoding tool. You might want to look at the 'tools' section at videohelp.com. Good luck. I use Nero Recode myself these days to recode to MPEG4AVC, but it allows for MPEG2 as well.

I am after the best quality possible that can fit on regular DVD DL disc. I have a feeling that with AVCHD/Blu Ray/HDDVD formats you cannot really reduce size without loosing quality - am I correct ? Is MPEG4AVC any better and if so is there a guide to convert .ts or MPEG2 HD file to that format ? Are there any other alternatives that exist today for keeping 1920X1080 resolution that allow me to fit about 2 hours of video/audio on 8.5GB DL DVD disc ? Or am I dreaming ? I heard that there are such things as DivxHD and WMFHD - what tools can I use to convert my .ts or MPEG2 HD files into these formats ? How long does it take etc...

I've converted my 1440x1080i MPEG2 (25mbps CBR) camcorder footage to AVC at 1920x1080p (15mbps VBR) using Nero Recode, and they look virtually identical to me. I'm using front projection w/a 106" screen. This way, I can put more on a SL or DL DVD w/o spreading the footage over two discs.
With Nero Recode, if you set the priority to 'high' or 'above normal' (unsure what it's called right now), the encoding time isn't bad. I have a 2.33GHz Core2Duo PC w/4 gigs of RAM.

Great , thanks - I would try that. A few more questions - can you then play that AVC disk in Blue ray or HDDVD stand alone players ?
Any benchamarks on teh actual encoding times and what would the size be after conversion. For example , I have 15GB .ts file converted to MPEG2 and it is about 2 hours. How much time would this take with Nero Recode and what size of the final file should I be expecting ?

It supports .mp4, .mkv, and blueray structure.
If I want to create a single layer DVD5, I do following:
Choose Blueray output
Choose 2 pass encoding
Lock Size, and type in 4440 (4480 does not fit on my disc)
Hit Video-Properties. If it is a 1080i, I tell it to de-interlace (have not had luck with auto detect)
Burn output using Nero Burning ROM w/ UDF2.5
Thats about it. I start it at 8pm, and by 10am, it is done. That is for a 2 hour mpeg.
And yes, any of the 3 choices will produce an h.264 file that can play on the PS3

Let's see if I recall off the top of my head (not at my machine right now)...
Open Nero Recode (part of Nero 8 suite). On its start screen, choose 'Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital'. Click 'Import Files' w/the green '+' button. Once clip has been imported, choose the PS3 AVC profile (one of the preset profiles already there), then make any adjustments you want for video/audio/target size/etc., then click 'Next' and burn to hard drive. The re-encoding process will take hours, especially if you do a two-pass for highest quality, then you'll end up with an MP4 file w/AAC audio.
I take the Nero-generated MP4 file and demux it using Yamb. I also demux the original MPEG2 file and demux it using TSMuxer or TSRemux. I then use an audio encoder (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/audio-encoders) (like eac3to or ffmpegGUI) to convert the original MPEG audio to AC3. Finally, I mux the AC3 file and the h264 file (by Yamb) via TSMuxer to output a Blu-ray structure.

Hi, I've been away for a while and missed some posts here. Trying to reread again but I have some questions that I can't find the answers.
Since I have ordered the HDV Sony HC9 (mpeg2) camcorder I wonder if the Ulead DMF 6 plus with the HD plugin can make AVCHD DVD+DL working directly with mpeg2 (no recompressing to avc)? Is it possible?
I have played around with TSremux and works great for my PS3 with mpeg2 25MBs files.
Is there any other way to include some menus also in the DVD+DL AVCHD?

If you don't need a menu and have a single clip, use TSRemux or TSMuxer to create a Blu-ray structure out of your MPEG2 clip. Both programs will create an AVCHD structure around that MPEG2 so the PS3/BD players are tricked into seeing an AVCHD even though what's inside is really MPEG2.

Hi All,
I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge of of the spec requiring BDMV discs to have AACS for playback on standalone players. From what I have read the requirement was waived for a certain grace period to allow playback without the AACS encryption, but new FW updates and possibly new players are supposed to restrict this, and AACS must be present.
I've been using tsmuxer to make BDMV and burn to DVD5/9, and it works great in the Samsung 1200, if the FW is 2.2 or before. FW 2.3 won't play any BDMV on DVD+/-R. A few of us in the 1200 thread have experiened this, but aren't sure if it's Samsuck's incompetence, or bringing the player up to spec and purposely removing the BDMV play ability???
In my case it also brings up the question why BD-r burned as BDMV won't play in the player, is it the lack of AACS, or that the 1200 doesn't like the BD-r media I'm using. FWIW, the 1200 plays from a BD-re, but begins skipping and stuttering after about 35-40 minutes, again it could be a media issue with the 1200.
Anyone have any suggestions so what I make today will be compatible with players down the road in a few years. Menus would be nice, but not required. I haven't been to successful with AVCHD and BDAV using MF6+, so I would rather stick with BDMV format.

MozartMan, thanks for your guide. I think I will go for the TSMuxer way with no menus as I need DVD9 media. Since you also use Vegas as I do, I will render the whole timeline using ac3 2.0 audio 384Kbs and for video the template BluRay 1440x1080 50i upper field mpeg2 CBR 25Mbs.
Then to create the avchd in TSMuxer options (General tab Mux VBR, Mux CBR etc) should I use any particular option to match my HDV 1080 50i 25MBs project? What are those options used for anyway?
Thanks in advance

In an experiment I took an MPEG-2 transport stream and used VLC to convert the file from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 (mpv4 setting) and mpga audio setting wrapped in a TS file. Renamed with an .MPG it played on my Sony BDP-300. With the same file I encoded again using the h264 (AVC) setting for video and it also played. There should also be a way to remux DivX files (h263) to look like MPEG-4 files. Correct me if I'm wrong but I would think that the h264 codec would be inclusive of the h263 methods. So far all I've found is a reference to a paper that infers that is possible.

Thanks once again - I am trying your method right now. I choose to burn AVC PS3 file to DVD9. Will Nero recode make it a compliant disc to play in stand alone Blu Ray player when I choose that option. I want to be able to play this disc in the stand alone BD player.
Is the AVC Ps3 format different then Nero Recode digital format and if so, what's the difference - could I play the disc in the BD stand alone player if I used Nero Recode digital format vs. AVC PS3 format.
Sorry about silly questions but I am very new to this.

Nero will spit out an MP4 file, which the PS3 will play as is off a USB drive or DVD-R, but to author it as an AVCHD disc, you need to demux it into separate video and audio streams using Yamb (freeware), convert the AAC audio to AC3, then mux the AC3 and video back into a Blu-ray structure using TSMuxer.

TSMuxer does not create an mpeg2 Blu-ray hybrid AVCHD structure that autoplays for me in the PS3. Has this changed?
Edit: I mean, "won't autoplay from DVD5/9 media." Of course it would on BD media.

Although it is slow, ripbot264 will copy the existing audio feed, keeping it as AC3. This removes the demux/mux step. While I would bet that the nero process is faster overall (even with extra steps), ripbot sure is easy.

TSMuxer does not create an mpeg2 Blu-ray hybrid AVCHD structure that autoplays for me in the PS3. Has this changed?
Edit: I mean, "won't autoplay from DVD5/9 media." Of course it would on BD media.
TSMuxer works for me on DVD5 w/ autoplay.
Have a burned DVD9 sitting in my laptop now to test, but am 2000 miles from home :(
Will pop it in on Wednesday night.
This is with PS3 and nero used for burning

Yup, TSMuxer's [v1.8.4] BD/AVCHD structure burned to DVD does autoplay for me.
Thanks GumboChief for suggesting ripbot264; I need to try it.

If TSMuxer author adds the ability to create a very simply/crude text menu as some (myself included) have been pressing him to do, it would be an almost perfect one-stop tool.

It will be an almost perfect one-stop tool for me if it will just eliminate the step of having to pass m2t thru Ulead MF6+ (to get rid of the stutters) before the TSRemux AVCHD wrapping step.
And being able to put in exact chapter points is a huge plus as well.
I downloaded the latest version, but won't get to test it until tonite. Does it author HDV to AVCHD hybrid without MF6+ or stuttering?
Fingers crossed. My ultimate goal is to author native XDCAM-EX, 35mbps VBR 1920x1080 24p to AVCHD hybrid without re-encoding, just like we do with HDV. Ulead MF6+ won't help here, because it wants to re-encode 24p, unlike HDV 60i which it smart renders.

Are your source videos from HDV camcorders that stutter? And how do you exactly do you pass the m2t thru MF6+? Do you create a BD project and then take the resulting disc image and extract the video back again?

I only work with 1080i/720p mpegs I pull via firewire from my cable box, but have not seen stutter ever, from that source.

TSMuxeR V1.8.4.88 did the trick! This finally puts me ahead of where I was with HD DVD, since I could not get beyond getting 60i streams authored.
With TSMuxeR V1.8.4.88, I authored native 24p (without pulldown flags) onto DVD/5 disk, at full raster 1920x1080 35mbps VBR, Sony XDCAM-EX. Flabbergasting motion video...
TSMuxeR is a bargain at twice the price :D

I have not seen any reports recently regarding TSMuxer/TSReMuxer menu-less avchd working on anything other than a PS3.
Are these working on other players, reliably? I know the Panny BD30 has not had much luck with this in the past.

I agree with you. Although I have not tried the latest AVCHD hybrid disk using TSMuxeR on any standalone BD players, my previous experience trying to play the TSRemux ones on the standalones was generally not successful, with one of the early Sony BDPS1? being the exception. But it would not play on Panny BD30 or the later Sonys like the BDSP300.

Thanks for the info. I guess if my friends want to see my shows, they'll just have to buy a PS3 :)
I dont have the patience to make the menu discs.
Now I just capture via firewire, edit out commercials with videoredo (10 min), run through TSMuxer (4 min) and burn.
It really is easy.

GumboChief, wwen you say that you burn - do you actually burn the captured .ts file to BD disc or do you convert it to some other formats that will fit on DVD-+DL disc without loosing any quality. I would like to do just that, I do not want to waste blank BD (they are still expensive)
Is there a way to convert to the size that it will fit on DVD-+DL disc without loosing any quality. I tried the Nero Recode and while it works and gives me 8.4 GB mp4 file I cannot make it play in my stand alone Samsung 1400 Blu ray player. I do not need any menu, I just need to put the disc into the player and auto play. I am trying to fit about 2hrs and 20 min on the DVD-+DL disc without loosing any quality - the original .ts file that I captured from HD STB via firewire (after edditing comercials in Videredo) was 15GB. The quality after the Nero Recode seems to be very good but it took 20 hrs!! to convert the file on dual core machine.
So to recap, is there a way for me to convert to avc/h.264 faster and then put this on the DVD-+DL disc to play in my stand alond BD player or do I need PS3 for that? Are you saying that PS3 will play that avc/h.264 mp4 file from the DVD-+DL disc ??
If there is any step by step guide available , could you please point me to it, I ahve been reading a lot and I am still so confused.
Thanks a bunch,

I burn to DVD-R most of the time. I actually just found some DVD+RL for < $1, so I bought a bunch.
I capture a .ts via firewire. I then save it as an .mpg (don't think that it is necessary to change wrapper, but I do). No loss of quality there. Takes 4-6 minutes to resave file. Then use TSMuxer to create the bluray structure.
If the file is too big to fit on a dual layer, you can run the file through ripbot264. Same thing as nero recode. Takes me 14 hours on a dual core T9300 w/ 4gig ram on Vista x64. ripbot will build bluray structure on its own.
Your bigger problem is the standalone player. These discs seem to work best on PS3.
You may follow the guide exactly right, and still end up with a disc that wont work for you.

I use Nero Burning Rom to burn. It is a standard data disc. Only difference is you need to use UDF physical 2.5.
I tried using DVD Movie Factory once, but their UDF 2.5 did not make a playable disc for me.
As for ripbot, it is pretty easy. Only thing I have trouble with is I need to manually tell it to de-interlace, if I have a 1080i file.
If I want to create a single layer DVD5 with ripbot264, I do following:
Choose Blueray output
Choose 2 pass encoding
Lock Size, and type in 4440 (4480 does not fit on my disc)
Hit Video-Properties. If it is a 1080i, I tell it to de-interlace (have not had luck with auto detect)
Burn output using Nero Burning ROM w/ UDF2.5

for DVD9, you are going to want that number a lot bigger.
Might take some frustrating experimentation.
I ran my first at the default of 4480, and found that nero said the file was too big for DVD5
I then had to wait another 14 hours to try 4460, which was also too big.
4440 finally worked.
You may want to try 8100 or even 8000 for an initial DVD9test.
4440 produced a set of files that are 4.36 gigs big (and that just barely fits on DVD5)
For 1080i, I set deinterlace to "top field first > 29.97 fps"
Finally, yes, it does create the structure if you select "bluray" as the output. Then you just drop BDMV and CERTIFICATES onto the Nero project.
One last tip
Test using a DVD5. These cost about 25 cents.
Also dont practice with your full movie. Only do a 30-60 second capture. Makes it a lot faster to figure out the process. Once it works, you can expand to a 2 hour show.
Also, you should use videoredo, or other similar program to resave the file from the original .ts
This will clean up bad glitches that can make the player choke.
Thanks GumboChief !

Some people have reported the 1400 as being unable and able to play the HD on DVD from our project. All I know is that when I tried Samsung players in store that they didn't work with AVCHDs from Movie Factory 6+. If TsMuxer or tsRemux (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=39) would be any more compatible I don't know. Anyway, my biggest point is that to this point there's only limited compatability for what works on different players for HD from DVD.

What I would do is use videoredo to split the original file at a natural transition point (so that it does not split in the middle of a sentence.)
Then just burn the 2 files as described above

Would you like to know if a menu-less AVCHD image will work on your standalone player? Read on.
1. Download this file (AVCHD.rar), containing a properly created AVCHD image. Decompress the file. This image plays PERFECTLY on a PS3 with firmware 2.35.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/a0p609
2. Download and install ImgBurn. You may also choose to use different software (Nero or other), if it is compatible with .nrg images.
http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
They don't allow direct linking, so please grab the file from one of the listed mirrors.
3. Once you launch the tool, select the icon in the top left, named "Write Image File to Disc"
4. By "Source", click the icon of the folder with a magnifying glass, and browse to the extracted AVCHD.nrg file.
5. Put a blank DVD into the device you wish to write with.
6. Make sure the DVD Recording device that you wish to write to is selected in the "Destination" drop down box.
7. Select the "File" menu up top, and choose, "Write".
8. When the writing is complete there will be a message box from ImgBurn stating it is finished. Simply click on the OK button.
9. Pop disc into your player. If your system is compatible with the process described in the next post, you are all set to author your own Blu-Ray discs, using cheap DVD-R media.
This image is a 30 second video of an MPEG-2 720p feed, digitally extracted from a cablebox. The video was not recompressed or altered in any way, other than to place it in an AVCHD container.

Panasonic DMP-BD30 v1.3: Success
PS3 firmware 2.35: Success

The AVCHD was created using the steps below.
1. Captured the *.ts video from a Motorola DCH-3416 on the Comcast network using instructions provided here.
http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/
2. File was cut to include only the exact frames needed by using VideoRedo Plus. File was saved as *.mpg. Trial version available
http://www.videoredo.com/en/Download.htm?download=plus
3. TSMuxer GUI was used to import the *.mpg file. I verified that the video stream, and only 1 audio stream was selected. Click the "Create Blu-Ray Disc" radiobutton. Choose a directory for the output. Click "start muxing"
http://www.smlabs.net/tsMuxer/tsMuxeR_1.8.4(b).zip
4. Launch Nero Burning ROM. From the "New Compilation Window", select DVD from the very top left corner. Now select "DVD-ROM (UDF)" from the left hand pane. Goto the UDF tab, up top. Set "options" to "manual settings". Set "parition type" to "physical partition". Set "file system version" to "UDF 2.50".
Click "New" at the bottom of the screen.
ftp://nero-mirror.com/software/Nero8/current/Nero-8.3.2.1b_eng_trial.exe
5. On the right hand side, browse to the directory you selected in Step 3. Drag & Drop the "BDMV" and "CERTIFICATE" directories to the left hand pane where the DVD is authored. Click the "Burn" icon at the top of the screen.
You should now have a working disc. Well, at least a disc that works on a PS3 :D

Thanks for the detailed instructions! Are these instructions only if you wish to keep a huge file that does not fit on the DVD9 ? I thought that in order to reduce a size so it fits on DVD9 , you needed to convert it to avc/h.264 in ripbot264 - isn't this correct or am I missing something ?
Usually about 2 hrs captured from HD cable box results in 15GB .ts file which will obviously not fit on DVD9 and besides blank BD-R media are still expensive.

This is for an mpeg that does fit on either a DVD5 or DVD9.
I capture a lot of 720p stuff (PBS in Chicago), so a 2 hour show fits on a DVD9, for me.
If you need to reduce the size of the file, you can use nero recode, ripbot264 (free), or other such program. Big draw back is that the recode is slow.
If you had 2 hours of 1080i material, you would probably have to recode it.

Brajesh,
I did everything above, except I ran into 2 snags (highlighted above)...
My BDMV/STREAM was named "00000.m2ts", not "0000.m2ts" (5 zeroes instead of 4 zeroes like you documented). When you say "Rename 0000.m2ts to 0001.m2ts" should I rename to 0001.m2ts or 00001.m2ts?
I was going to try it both ways, but then I ran into snag #2...
My Nero 7 DVD-ROM(UDF) only has drop down choices for UDF 1.02, 1.50, 2.00, or 2.01
How do I get UDF 2.50?
Thanks,

I have no idea, but there may also be patches or newer revs of the nero 7.x stream that include UDF 2.5
I would check their support site.
Also, your post says you have DvdMF. I had no luck with it, but it also includes a UDF2.5 burn feature.

use free imageburnYeah, I already tried imgburn... I get this error:
"Failed to set L0 Data Zone Capacity

Let me pull down the updates to Nero 7 (388Mb  ) and/or the trial for Nero 8 (185Mb). I was hoping to avoid that... last time I installed a trial, it was a huge pain to go back to the purchased version (v7.0 Ultra) that I already had.
Last year I finally had the tools and workflow down pat for making HD-DVD demo discs with slick menus... now I'm trying to replicate the process/results for Blu/PS3 on DVD9.

Well, I have to admit, imgburn is working just fine. Watching a RadioHead concert I captured last week.

Ok I have read a lot of this thread and I am more confused that when I started.
Is there any sep by step instructions like GumboChief made but for backing up Blu Ray to hard drive? If so will these files play on a PS3?
I admit that I only read the first four and the last four ends of this thread because it is a lot of information. I don’t really care about the special features or anything like that, I just want high def movies and high def audio. People are talking about a million different programs and a million different ways and it is really confusing. I know there is nothing like DVD Shrink for blu rays but anything even close to as easy.

Clarence, you can skip the Ulead DVD MF6+ step now. Just use TSMuxer only. The latest version does the trick. You can download the UDF 2.50 drivers/files; I don't recall right now, but someone posted a zipped file on AVS recently. If I find it later, I'll post a link. And, I agree w/others about ImgBurn; great, easy tool.

This thread is not really focused on the extraction of commercial BluRays. As such, I don't think there is a step by step guide for that on this (long) thread. Of course some of the methods talked about here, can be applied to what you want.
I don't have a bluray PC drive, but I think most people use this to do their bluray extractions. I am not aware of any free tools, but then again, I have never looked.

For this, you guys should look at the doom9 forum, and secondarily the SlySoft forum. Creating 'back-ups' is a controversial subject. IMHO creating Blu-ray back-ups isn't worth the effort, but it's fairly easy to do if you're so inclined.

Reported Compatibility for Following Players:
PS3 firmware 2.35: Success
Samsung BDP-1400: Unknown (should get a report from Nikonowski this weekend)
Hi GumboChief,
I am happy to report that after burning this file to DVD-RW 4.7GB it played flawlessly in my stand alone Blu Ray player Samsung 1400 :) Excellent quality (however it showed resolution as 1920X1080 on my display)
Thanks for letting me try this method. It worked like a charm.
Additional question/clarification:
GumboChief, you mentioned that you captured a lot of cable shows in 720p and that about 2 hours of that stream seems to fit on the DVD9 disc. Is there a way from me to force (or change) broadcast from my cable box to be 720p instead of 1080i ? That way I would not have to re-encode to fit on DVD9 as I would simply follow you instructions (the same nes that you used when creating this clip)
Thanks once again,

Awesome!
Your player must be scaling it up, as it is for sure 720p.
Unfortunately, there is no way to change what the cable box captures. In the USA, ABC is 720p, while CBS & NBC are 1080i. Luckily I watch zero shows on CBS or NBC.
Your best bet is to use ripbot264. As long as you go overnight, it isn't that bad. It is REALLY hard to tell the difference between the original MPEG2 and the H.264 file.
And that is on a still image which I paused :)

The file size is ONLY a function of average bit rate and time. Lowering the resolution is done to make the compression artifacts less noticable for low bit rate files. So the only way to make the final file size smaller is to reduce the average bit rate or reduce the play time. If your file is mpeg2 then you can usually reduce the bit rate by about half when encoding into H264. As mentioned Ripbot264 is a pretty simple GUI for doing H264 encoding.

Let's see if I recall off the top of my head (not at my machine right now)...
Brajesh, I don't think I understand these last instructions after Nero Recode creates mp4 file, can you provide a bit more details i.e. step by step please ?
Also, why would you to convert the original MPEG audio to AC3 and how do I do that ? Doesn't Yamb create 2 files already (audio and video streams)
Can I not just use TSMuxer to mux those 2 files that Yamb created to output to a Blu Ray structure. Once again, I am very new to this and I would really appreciate some detailed instruction as I don't even know these tools .
Thanks a lot!

OK - my files are more like 15GB so perhaps I can wait a bit longer like 15min. What should I see once it loads up the file ? I am unable to pick Blu Ray output while the file is being loaded. Initially the CPU spikes up and them maybe 2-3 minutes after that the CPU load goes down and the program looks like it is hang. I am not really sure what I am waiting for. I want to use the ripbot as it does everything else in one step (including creating BD folders )

Hey guys-
I recently got a blu-ray burner. I burnt up a BD-RE after converting a file using TSRemux to create the folders. I pop it into my PS3 and it plays. However, my ability to fast forward and review is fairly limited. For example, it will fast forward at 1.5x no problem, but at 10x it freezes stutters and so forth. Is there anything in particular to look for?
Also, I've run these files through VideoReDo and it is not showing any errors. However, if I use Ulead MF6+ w/ the HD pack to make the disc, I'm getting a lot of "error in the DVD engine" errors with the video and audio are being mixed. Any tips?
Thanks,

Well, I've been away for a while. I was waiting for my new Blu blanks to arrive along with the LG GGW-H20L burner.
I used the PowerProducer4 included in the box to pull in 4 480i mini DV tapes I had taken in Disenyland and the UK, plugged in my new 25Gb LG BD RE and produced my first BDAV.
Took up about half the disc, and whilst it'll never be mistaken for full HD, it does look pretty good.
I'm also about to demise my old Sony PC 100E miniDV camcorder and replace it with a Cannon HF100 AVCHD and a couple of cards.
I do have MF6+, but I haven't got the HD pack yet, so no BDMVs so far.
The whole process took a couple of hours on my 2Gb Conroe 6600 PC.
I hope that the BDMV is just as easy to do.
Just for the record, I'm not planning to burn BD on DVD5 or 9. I'll use something else to render those. I do admit to wondering how a AVCHD file will look when it's rendered down onto a DVD9.

Hi Brajesh,
The above steps do not work for me after I get the Nero Recode mp4 file I cannot load it into tsMuxeR - I get error "Can't detect stream type. File name..." and the same things happens when I try to load AC3 file as well.
So I am not sure what is wrong but I still cannot get all these tools to output to Blu Ray structure after the Nero Recode process. I have a 8.2GB mp4 file but I cannot do anything with it ???
Help please - is there a guide step by step somwhere ? Ripbot does not work for me either. Once I load mpeg2 file converted (via VideoRedo) from ts file, the whole process completes very quickly i.e. it says all jobs have finished but there is no output files. And besides it should take about 20 hours for 2 hours of source. I would prefer Ripot because it is all-in-one tool , supposedly once I load MPEG 2 file I will comeup with BD structure - except this does not work either for me :(
Help please - I am so frustrated!

So I dl'ed the MF6+ HD pack and added it in.
I tried to pull in the same 4 files and found that it turned a previous 12.5Gb disc into more than 25. So I cut it down to 2 files and added in a basic menu and tried.
The project blew out 4 hours later when there wasn't enough room on the BDRE (in all fairness, it did warn me up front).
So I cut it down to a 10min clip and tried that. Naturally, the output doesn't look that much different than the BDAV, the menu was cute. I have to check the sound out between the 2 clips though.
I may have to look to upgrade the CPU, it thrashed it to within an inch of its life. Doing ordinary DVD5 or 9's did the same, but for a lot less (150fps rendering). More money, or just go back to my PII rendering days and do it over night.
So far I like what I see, although I haven't gone quite so deeply into it as others on this forum.
As an interesting side note, I currently run a PAL camorder. The BD output was a lot smoother than the DVD5/9. I originally put it down to the PAL to NTSC frame rate. I now wonder if it was the sw that I used, so I've burnt a quicker DVD5 with MF6+ and I'll try it in the PS3 later.
For my money, MF6 appears to be just as useful as other DVD rendering software that I've used.

Do H.264 files work on your PC? You may be missing a codec or something.
If you still have my image, try to play the mt2s file from the dvd, on your pc.
Just click on the file directly. If it fails, you have a codec issue

Sorry for the cross post:
Thanks for this great information! I’ve successfully burned the sample AVCHD and it IS playable on my 1500, but when I attempt to mux a saved .mpg (converted .ts of my own, using VideoRedo Plus as instructed) using TSMuxer GUI, I get an “Errors” Message (after the Mux)) “Unsupported Media Type 4 for Blu-Ray Muxing”.
I continue, using Nero Burning ROM to burn the BDMV & CERTIFICATE files (step 4 & 5) without any problem, but when I attempt to play the disc in my Samsung 1500, it goes into “Stop” Mode after loading.

Where did you get the .ts file from? What cable company do you have? What cable box? if it is a 1080i capture, try doing a 720p or vice versa.
Also, I suggest you do a short 1 minute capture, for testing purposes.
If it still fails, upload the 1 minute raw .ts to that same hosting service I used, and post the link. I will try it on my side.

The .ts files that come off of the cable boxes in most of the USA are mpeg2 files. I have no idea if the linked process will work for you. Search in this thread, as there are many posts regarding camcorders.

I do have access to some (short) commercially produced .ts files and I'll try converting one of them as you suggested.
Thanks again for your help and kindness,

Ahhh. I have zero experience with camcorder files.
The .ts files that come off of the cable boxes in most of the USA are mpeg2 files. I have no idea if the linked process will work for you. Search in this thread, as there are many posts regarding camcorders.
The commercial .ts file worked perfectly, so I'm sure there's a way to convert my Camcorder files (raw .m2t) somehow to the correct format.

Ben,
HDV format has audio in MPEG format. Blu-ray specs don't support MPEG audio. You need to demultiplex your .m2t file into elementary streams, video (.m2v) and audio (.mpa). Then re-encode .mpa into Dolby Digital .ac3 file, then multiplex them back into .m2ts file with tsMuxeR.
Commercial .ts files have no problem because audio is in DD format.
Why some of my AVCHD burnt on DVD 5 show 1/3rd GREEN SCREEN on bottom once played back on PS3. I did not select subtitles while creating BDV with TsREMUX?

Thank you for your help. I downloaded two different (tryware) encoders in an attempt to convert the .mpa file to .ac3, but neither one would work. Can you suggest a suitable program for this application?

You said in your previous post that you had Vegas 7. Just use it to convert .mpa to .ac3.
I used Vegas 7 before, now I use Vegas 8 Pro.

Look at the resolution of the file in tsMuxeR. It should be 1920X1080 or 1280X720. If it is something like 1920X800 then it is cropped and that is why you get the green. The only solution is to re-encode to the proper HDTV resolution.

thanks a lot, I think, you are right! But when I remux it to .ts files and then play via tversity or downloaded to my ps3 HD then it is not cropped? only in AVCHD though?

I have hv20 and Sony Vegas Pro 8. In Vegas I render my footage using the mainconcept encoder 1440X1080. I customize this encoder and under system tab I check save as seperate elementary streams which creates a .mv2 video file and .mpa audio file since Bluray does not accept mpeg audio. The bitrate is set as constant at 25,000,000 bps. Then I separately render an audio file as .ac3. Then I open up tsmuxer 1.3.6 and select the .mv2 file and the .ac3 file and create a .mt2s file which I then load into tsremux v.0.0.21.2. Output to bluray and then burn these folders using imgburn to DVD-R. This will then autoplay on my ps3. However, I noticed when playing the video, there is a very slight stutter every few seconds. Am I doing this right?

kitzj0,
1. You don't have to use TSRemux. tsMuxeR 1.8.4 has Blu-ray disk output.
You can download it from here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=134104
2. Stutter may be from TSRemux.
Thanks MozartMan. That did the trick. When reading through this post, I googled tsmuxer and downloaded an older version where bluray was greyed out. This works perfectly!
Now on to figuring out how to do menus which will probably be impossible to figure out.

TSRemux and tsMuxeR don't do menus.
If you want menus, you need to invest $100 in Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6+, or wait until DVD Architect 5 comes out.
You can download my guide for MF6+ from this post:

MozrtMan: I'm patiently waiting for DVD 5 architect to come out. I have Ulead VS11.5 plus. I may try to use your method using your tutorial for moviefactory with videostudio. I don't want to have to buy another program right now.
Will DVD A 5 solve these problems and create a disk playable in the ps3? Also this week I am getting a bluray burner, but I suspect I will have the same problem with menus using VideoStudio 11.5.
I have tried burning a Bluray disk to hard drive in VideoStudio 11.5 and using imgburn to burn those files to DVD-R. However, the ps3 only recognizes that disk as a data disk without menus. I have been successful using Vegas to create an AVCHD file whick I use Ulead VS 11.5 to author a menu based avchd disk, but this doesn't look as good as the 25,000,000 bps mpg using the mainconcept encoder.

Hmmm. ImgBurn may not solve your issue. If you can upload a 30-60 second sample to something like Rapidshare & send a link, I can test it for you.
hi, i did a small "scenarist ps3 patch", to adress the "CopyPermissionIndicator" value for scenarist v4.3 users...
by default, it start a project with "0", so its not necesary to adjust project anymore.
put in "Sonic\Scenarist HDMV\AuthoringApplication\dll"
this patch is based on the "dvdit ps3 patch", that only change the initial value. nothing else.

Additional Information:
Following the procedures that seemed to work and allow me to successfully burn my converted .ts files to DVD-R (Blu-Ray), I’ve hit a ROAD BLOCK.
I don’t know what happened, but now, after burning a disc using Nero ROM, the disc won’t even play correctly in my Computer. The Audio stutters along, and the video is just still images.
What’s puzzling, is after muxing the video and ac3 audio files, the .m2ts Stream File, within the BDMV folder, plays back flawlessly, both audio and video in the computer.
I would guess that something must be incorrectly set in Nero ROM? I’m going to try a re-install of Nero 8.
Any advice would be deeply appreciated.
Thanks,
Ben

What application do you use for muxing?

Usually burning application has nothing to do with video playback.
P.S.
Stutter usually comes from bad muxing and/or wrong filed order (in my experience).

HDV converted to .ts (HDVtoMPG2). Then processed using VideoReDoPlus.
Audio .ac3 extracted (per your advice) in Vegas. I also tried using Vegas to extract both an .mpg2 (from the raw .m2t files) and a .m2v. Also attempted to extract from the .ts file using Vegas 8Pro. Every combination that I tried to use failed to burn a playable DVD.

Are sure it is HDVtoMPG2? I only know HDTVtoMPEG2 application.
If it is HDTVtoMPEG2, then I think this is where you problem is. HDTVtoMPEG2 doesn't handle HDV files correctly (per my experience). You don't need to use HDTVtoMPEG2 at all and you don't need to convert HDV (.m2t) file to .ts file.
This is what I do:
1. I load .m2t file (raw or edited) into VideoReDo, then save it as separate streams (.m2v and .mpa) (basically this is demuxing procedure, and VideoReDo does very good job)
2. Then I encode .mpa file to .ac3 file using Vegas 8 Pro.
3. Use tsMuxeR 1.8.4B to mux .m2v (HDV video stream) and .ac3 (DD audio) into .m2ts file.
That .m2ts file plays perfectly on PS3 from any media.
I didn't try Blu-ray output from tsMuxeR 1.8.4B to burn to DVD disk and play on PS3. I will try it tonight.

Given what we know today, if shopping for a camcorder, would it be better to get an AVCHD model, or an HDV model?

I would go with HDV camcorder that uses DV tapes.
1. DV tape is your instant backup media (more reliable than HDD or flash or mini-DVD).
2. Better quality than AVCHD (25 Mbit/s vs 16 Mbit/s)
3. Easier to edit (old mature MPEG-2 technology)
4. You can always convert HDV (MPEG-2) to AVCHD (AVC) (with Vegas or other programs) and it will be better quality than AVCHD directly from camcorder. On the other hand you will not gain anything converting AVCHD (AVC) to HDV (MPEG-2).

I bought an AVCHD HD camcorder, just so I could do away with tapes and the need to properly store them. I have an old Sony DV camcorder and have had to renew several tapes here and there.
HDDs are cheap, and you can splat backups of SD cards in various places. With the right size, you can also dump the raw contents of the card straight to DVD as well.

My error. It is, of course. HDTVtoMPEG2. Unfortunately, most of my raw .m2t files are no longer available, having been converted to .ts files for playback on my old AV/Link HD DVD Player, using DVHSTool.
This is what I do:
1. I load .m2t file (raw or edited) into VideoReDo, then save it as separate streams (.m2v and .mpa) (basically this is demuxing procedure, and VideoReDo does very good job)
Excuse my lack of knowlege, but I don't seem to find an option in VideoReDo to save a file in .mpa format. Are you saving in .mpg and then somehow splitting the file into .m2v and .mpa?
2. Then I encode .mpa file to .ac3 file using Vegas 8 Pro.
I've tried both the .ts file and the .mpg file to extract the .ac3 in Vegas, but not the .mpa. This may be a contributing factor.
3. Use tsMuxeR 1.8.4B to mux .m2v (HDV video stream) and .ac3 (DD audio) into .m2ts file.
So you DON'T use Blu-Ray Output? That may be the answer to my problem!
That .m2ts file plays perfectly on PS3 from any media.

No, you are not saving in .mpa format. You just de-multiplex .m2t or .ts file (save video and audio as separate streams). Audio file comes out in whatever format it was inside MPEG file.
When you load file in VideoReDo, click Save As... button
In Save As dialog box click on drop-down arrow Save as type:
Choose Elementary Streams (*.mpv)
Click Save button
This will de-multiplex your .m2t or .ts file into elementary stream.

I think PS3 is the only one Blu-ray player that will play bare files (.m2t, .m2ts, .mp4, .mpg) from any media because it is like multimedia PC.
Any other stand alone will only play authored disks (AVCHD or BD), not data disks.
2. Better quality than AVCHD (25 Mbit/s vs 16 Mbit/s)
Is this still the case? I would think that as AVCHD bitrates increase you should see better results from AVCHD with the newer camcorders.
Not making any claims, just asking - I would have thought that AVCHD at full res at 16 Mbps would compete with 1440x1080 MPEG2 at 25... just conceptually...
I would also think that the new cams that record direct to flash would be an improvement over tape...?

I based my statements on posts on Sony Vegas forum. Most of those posters are pros or indies. Somebody asked the same question regarding what camcorder to buy, AVCHD or HDV. Most answers where HDV.
Not making any claims, just asking - I would have thought that AVCHD at full res at 16 Mbps would compete with 1440x1080 MPEG2 at 25... just conceptually...
Yes, it is possible. I personally converted HDV MPEG-2 file to AVCHD (AVC at 16 Mbps) using Vegas 8 Pro. Quality almost identical. But what I've seen on Sony Vegas forum, AVCHD that comes out of camcorder is still less quality than HDV because it has to be done in real time, and AVC (AVCHD) codec requires a lot of horse power.
I would also think that the new cams that record direct to flash would be an improvement over tape...?
Probably yes in terms of convenience, because video file is the same, HDV or AVCHD, regardless the media.
Probably yes in terms of convenience, because video file is the same, HDV or AVCHD, regardless the media.
Well, conceptually the flash media may offer better peak bitrate opportunities, with a number of assumptions of course (live VBR being one of them).
Certainly the fact that these encodes are done in real time has a strong effect on quality.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I think this is the right thread, if not please forgive. I'm considering buying a blu-ray burner. My wife has bought me a "cheap" hd camcorder and for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the hd content (.mov) onto a dvd or edit them. Here's what i've learned so far....
1. I can convert (i use this term loosely) .mov file to avi by changing the file extension, this does not always work.
2. By changing the file extension windowsmoviemaker still does not see the file.
3. I can use a free dvd converter called "dvdclick" to convert the .mov to .vob file, still can't edit them and they loose quality (not what i want).
4. Various different programs, handbrake, super, etc. can convert these .mov files after some trial and error on my part, but all loose quality.
5. I have no software that can edit the .mov file like movie maker, I may have to just break down and purchase something. The problem being is that the video editor are quite pricey.
6. Regardless of what i've tried, i can't get .mov (hd content) to burn to a standard dvd and play in my ps3 or any other player for that matter (i assume standard players don't read hd content even on a standard dvd?)
So, perhaps a blu-ray burner w/ packed in software would help? If so, where's the cheapest/best deal on a br burner? Newegg?
Thanks,
MozartMan
