View Full Version : I hate the 360...

These are my wife's words.

Based on what I've read from various threads here, I'm not the only guy whose wife feels the same way.

I've heard some good rebuttals to this common rant, and I thought it might be funny to have a thread where we can all share our stories and maybe share ways of softening up our women so they don't cringe when they hear that wonderful white box powering up!

I've recently been successful in diverting her attention away from the xbox to things she actually enjoys doing, like reading. So we went to the library and got our library cards and she checked out a book! Now I'm gonna perform some jedi mind trick action and suggest she read a little Sherlock Holmes while I deftly power up my white box! :D

I think I've got the opposite of your problem...
Mine spent all my Marketplace points on arcade games and played them all weekend while I worked on my HT. :D

My wife probably spends 10 hours/wk on Zuma alone. She's also beaten Hexic and Jewel Quest.

These are my wife's words. Why does she hate it? The fact that it steals you from her? The noise? The aesthetics? The cost?

Oh, I know. I bet she just hates playing an FPS without a mouse and keyboard. ;)

Give her Viva Pinata. I don't understand the game, myself, but my wife loves it.

I can't get mine off my machine. Zuma, Hexic, Bejeweled, UNO, Lego Star Wars, and Viva Pinata.

She completely hogs it.

I 2nd the Viva Pinata suggestion, my wife loves that games and she also plays 4 or 5 live arcade games. Of course now that my wife likes the 360 she never would get off of it. So, I now have 3 360's in the house :D To top it off, I spent several hours this weekend playing PC Games while my family played the 360's.

My wife hates how loud it is when playing a game disc, or a movie, but I can't pull her away from Bejeweled, sometimes its hours at that game. In all honesty it really is a loud sucker, and I just got it a few weeks ago, o well love the games and no crash or freeze yet.... :)

i tried that, but the game ended up sucking ME in, she played it a couple times, but not nearly as much as i have.

i also got uno for her, with the camera, but i found myself using it more than her... i dont know what it is about uno that gives people the urge to get high on camera though....

Hedonist,

I've only been able to do this by mapping my game time to a time that my wife does something else. Whether this be calling her parents, working on one of her hobbies, etc., I do my best to game only when she's otherwise engaged. It sounds like you're doing the same thing. :)

The times when she's not, I just ask her (even though I can't imagine she'd every say no). I do it out of common courtesy and will even give her a time. For example, "Hey, I'm going to game with Ken for about an hour, is that cool?"

:)

Looks like someone may need to buy another 360. :D

AJ, just give her your headset and let her listen as you frag your own team to death. I'm sure that will give her countless hours of quality entertainment. :D Personally, my wife enjoys my playing. It gives her a few moments of solitude as I yell obscene things at the screen while I watch my head blow apart in Gears.

My wife hates Gears of War....she'll fall asleep watching a movie, so I'll pop in GoW and do some online fragging...she ALWAYS wakes up when the chainsaw revs, so she sees the bloodcovered screen...

My ex-girlfriend used to bitch about the 360 all the time too. Then I had her sit down and watch/listen to an actual session on Halo 2. She was a collegiate athlete and loves to compete no matter what (including Ms. Pacman), so I figured if she listened and watched, she'd see how real the competitive factor was. Until then, she just thought it was stupid. She got so into the action and trash-talking she decided to take it upon herself to reward me every time I went on a killing spree and shut somebody up. Since then we've tried to come up with a term for video game...well...if I was driving the car on the highway and we did the same thing it has a specific term. So give that a shot maybe, and you might be a surprised as I was about the results.

Well... you might want to consider NOT starting a thread like this on a public forum for her to find...

Could work tho... if she sees it, you might get to play all the white box you want while she "isn't talking to you"

My wife is 7 months pregnant. The 360 keeps me and our son out of her hair while she rests and bakes the baby.

My wife split the 360 with me for Valentine's day a few weeks ago. She wanted to play Viva Pinata. She also plays Hexic, and I got her Uno online.

She prefers the Wii though. Honestly I do to, as we can both play Wii games. I just end up starting late and staying up way too late after she goes to bed playing Gears of War. I get a lot less sleep now thanks to the 360.

Overall she likes it but I don't think she likes Gears of War very much. I've been playing it at least a few hours every other day or more.

The 3D graphics in Gears make her a bit queasy though, especially so when I'm doing the duck/running thing. She gets that from some 3D games. I got her Buffy for the original Xbox and she ran to the bathroom to throw up about 20 minutes after she started playing it. Weird that games like Mario Kart don't seem to be a problem, but the occasional 3D platformer will make her a bit queasy, and 3D FPS games generally make her ill.

She actually found this thread amusing and I will admit that during my last GOW session on Saturday she actually enjoyed watching me and even trash talked a bit.

Granted it only took her 3 cosmos and a glass of pinot grigio to loosen up. ;) My prediction for the night was upheld...she passed out quite soon after watching a few rounds and I was free to continue drinking and killing my teammates (accidental FF of course).

....oh and I did manage to enjoy her alcohol induced increase in libido prior to her passing out. Purely consensual, I assure you. :)

I confine my gaming time to later in the evening or when the wife has got something else going on.
I also started calling my Tuesday night gaming 'League Night' and told her to think of it like if I were gone golfing, bowling or some other league event, only I don't have to limit intake due to having to drive and don't smell like smoke when I get back. It seems to have worked as she now always assumes I'll be playing on Tuesdays and doesn't seem to care.

Hasn't been a problem so far, guess as long as I don't spend all my waking hours (and hours I should be sleeping) playing she doesn't seem to mind.

My gf doesn't mind me playing at all. In fact, she plays gears with me and I LOVE her for it. She really does love me.......but.........she has no idea what shes in for when Halo 3 releases. I've told her how much I played Halo 2 multi-player but she doesn't seem to believe anyone can play that much and sacrifice so much sleep over a game. I'm just hoping it wont be that bad this time around.

It still seems strange that your wife put the kibosh on your headset, but allows you to have sound....or do you play with headphones so that no sound escapes to disturb your youngling?

I have two suggestions for you -

Long baths with books and/or magazines (EW is my wife's favorite)

Girls night out - My wife belongs to the 'So Happy Its Thursday' club, goes out to eat with her friends every thursday night.

We have small children (3 and 5) so generally as long as the kids are already asleep (after 8:00) and I don't stay up all night, she usually doesn't mind.

Plus I play a lot less now than I used to when I played WoW, so she knows how much I could be playing and is thankful that it isn't quite so frequent.

I play with headphones on so as not to disturb the others. The real problem is not my wife... it's trying to keep our 7yr old away from violent games. If he knows I'm playing, he will try to sneak down and watch. We let him play games, but we strictly monitor what he plays. He's not allowed to see or play games where people get killed. Someone else let him play Medal of Honor and some 007 game on a PSP once and he had bad dreams for a week. So he's definitely not ready to see or hear anything like GOW yet... I wish he was old enough though. "Mute & Son" would be a formidable team. He's only 7, but he could probably kick my ass in GOW.

"Mute & son".......Damn, that's funny! I applaud your efforts to keep him away from violent games. I stop playing if my 3 year old daughter walks in the room, because she imediately stops and watches the screen. Not that Gears has any blood or violence in it.........
