Instead of paying $200 for one of those converter boxes, would this work?

1. Get a MS VGA cable for the 360 ($40)
2. Attach the VGA cable to a VGA (male) to DVI (female) adapter ($15)
3. Attach the female DVI end to a male DVI to male HDMI adapter or cable ($15)

$70...would this work, and would it deliver the 1080p output?

I ask because I have a Sony that only accepts 1080p via HDMI

thanks,
Rob

I doubt it. You would need a dvi-d connector, a dvi-a is for analog, and hdmi is digital, also dvi- d is digital. Somewhere you would need a converter to convert an anlog signal to digital, and by switching plug ends, it doen't do it. Your hdmi will probably not work with it.

The 360 outputs VGA which can only be converted to DVI-A.

Most PC graphics cards on the other hand support DVI-I which has both analog and digital.

DVI-D is the same as HDMI (excluding audio) only shifted in color space slightly.

Why people try to go to this great of lengths to get 1080p is beyond me. Most TV's are better at de-interlacing anyways, so just send 1080i via component and let your TV do the rest. I suppose DVD upconvert is one good reason though if you dont have a dedicated DVD player.
