Hey guys,
I just picked up the new SXRD 50A2020 set. The picture is great, but I've noticed a black spot towards the top of the screen in the center. I'm guessing it's a dead pixel, but I'm not sure.

I've tried to return it and they won't accept it - since they claim that's normal behavior from these type of screens. In the owner's manual it says this:

"Although the TV is made with high-precision technology, black dots may appear or bright points of light (red, blue or green) may appear constantly on the screen. This is a structural property of the panel and is not a defect."

So that sounds like Sony's way out of being held responsible for a dead pixel(s). Anyways, I've got a service call for this week, but is there REALLY anything that can be done with that spot? What is it? I've heard some pixels can just get stuck, but this is a black dot. Just wondered if anyone had any insight.

Thanks!

If it's a black dot, it's probably not a dead pixel. That would actually require three dead pixels, each in the exact same place on the respective color panel, which would be very unlikely. I'd guess that it's debris stuck on the screen, and the service guy should be able to get it out fairly easily.

Not sure where you bought it, but most retailers have a 30 day return policy (or at least 15 days). If it bothers you return it and exchange it for another set. I would. If you bought online, well, you may be out of luck as their return policies are usually no returns on televisions.

Okay...I'm as insane about quality as they come...

I have one 'black spot' on my KDS-60A2000 (In the upper right hand corner..about one pixel wide)...

And even with my insanity I'm not returning the set or calling for a repair.

It's 1920x1080! I can't even see it from my viewing position 8 feet away!

I had a 720p 3 LCD RP with 5-6 pixels stuck on green within a roughly one inch area that WAS viewable from where I sat so THAT set went back...but unless my SXRD gets worse I'll keep what I got...

Yeah, I agree. I'm having someone come take a look, but if nothing can be done, I'll still keep it. I can only see it when I get up real close to the set. I was just wondering what it was - if anyone has any experience with it. Sounds like I'm not the only one thank goodness.

I didn't even think about my set having stuck pixels until one day, I was on a pure black image and about 1 foot away. I managed to find 5 lit blue or green pixels in various places on the screen. They are undetectable from more than 3 feet away.

Bought my KDS-60A2000 on Saturday. I'm still monkeying with the thing to get a decent SD picture, but my set has a very small, definitely black, spot in the lower left corner/quadrant. It is maybe 1/16"roughly square with slightly jagged edges. It's location makes it undetectable during SD in pillarbox, but shows up on the channel banner that my cable provider has on the bottom of the screen when changing channels, or when the full screen has white or very light colors in that area.

I'm guessing it's some small foreign object either stuck to the inside of the screen, on the lamp, or on a projection lens????? I've yet to call Sony, but that is my intention to see if they'll send a service guy to access the inside of the set.

Yup, yours sounds exactly like mine - except for the location of my dot. It does look like a spec of dirt or something to me rather than a dead pixel. Let me know what you decide to do.

I guess for me it comes down to this...

If the retailer won't take it back and a repair guy comes out to clean it (assuming it is debris) will cracking that thing open in your living room actually make things WORSE? Who's to say that you won't get MORE debris in there.

But as I mentioned my decision was probably easier to make due to the location of my 'dot'.

I think that's unlikely. You'd notice it as soon as he put the screen back on, and you could just tell him to do it again.

Anyway, if it's a few dead pixels and you're out of the return period, you're probably out of luck. But other than what dcorban has, this all sounds like foreign junk somewhere in the light path, which is really easy to take care of.

So anyone else have any black dots or spots on their SXRD's screen?

Is it possible to have a black dot on top of a green glob?
