I have a 2001 Mitsubishi 50 silver series rptv, it has seen a lot of use in the last 5 yrs (on at 8am - off at 11:00 pm typically.) In last few months, it has developed a problem. After turning it on in the morning the picture will flicker for about 10 minutes before it stabilizes. Also I believe that the picture has steadily deteriorated, that or, I am just comparing it to the HD sets that I see at friends houses. Either way, I am considering replacing it, but would like to do so with another floor standing set, so I don't need to buy a tv stand to go between the existing entertainment center pillars.

I am also not against keeping this set for awhile, if repairing it can be done inexpensively. Has anyone had this problem on their set? Are there any HD RPTVs that are the floor standing style, that are recommended?

Thanks for reading.

In my opinion there are no currently produced crt based rptvs that match the quality of your Mits (when it was new). Closest thing would be the Hitachi 51F59, many folks are very happy with it.

I've been reading the threads about the Hitachi 51F59, and coincidentally I went to the local Best Buy to see it for myself. I have some credit card rewards that amount to about $600 in BB credit, and I was thinking that the 51F59 could be a great HD replacement for my Mits, on the cheap. Unfortunately the set looked terrible next to the DLP's, Plasma, and LCDs that were on display. Maybe my expectations were too high, but the set looked very grainy, and I dont' think any amount of calibration could make the set look as good as any of the newer sets on display.

they (BB) have every enhancement turned on on this tv and they usually have it set on the factory contrast and brightness which is 70%+ for both and washes the pic out bad. i was in a bb about a two weeks ago and saw the 51f59 setting in the upper corner all by itself. i then went into the menu (i have the 57f59) and turned all the enhancements off. turned the brightness and contrast down to respectable levels. just a few things i did in a two minute time frame made a big improvement in the picture. i was not able to get into the 117 point converg ,but i did hit the magic focus button. i then stood back and the pic was much improved. there was still to much light hitting the tv for my liking. anyway this is a good tv don't go by the pic in the store. if you can get your mits fixed for under or around $500 the i would keep it otherwise just buy the 51f59 or maybe consider a plasma? my step dad just picked up the 42in maxent plasma from bb for under $900 and he is very happy with it ( he went from a 50inch crt rptv that was not hd. anyway good luck in whatever you do. if it was me though i would see about getting the mits fixed first if thats to much get the 51f59 i don't think you will be disappointed once you got it home and got it setup correctly. good luck

My 7 year old Mits VS-60705 crapped out a few months ago (coolant leak on signal board, which is no longer available), and after much research I got a Hitachi 57F59A (for under a grand w/ free delivery @ CC).

In store they look bad, for reasons outlined above, but once you get it home and make a few adjustments in the user menu (others have gone into the service menu and made further adjustments, but I'm very happy with my PQ and don't feel the need to do any service menu adjustments), the PQ is outstanding.
