I'm looking at picking up either of these TV's, they are both in my price range, and they are what I have narrowed it down to for my Xbox 360 w/HD-DVD drive combo. I only plan on watching HD-DVD's, DVD's and playing Xbox on the unit. If I end up getting the Samsung, then Im sure Ill make use of the tuner but its not a big priority for me as I can get a seperate cable box if I go with the Westinghouse Model.

I will be using the Xbox VGA input as I prefer the razor sharp text and picture quality for both games and movies. VGA+HD-DVD+Calibrated picture=SLICK!

Anyway, any pro's or con's to each?

Does the VGA still wash out colors or was it fixed with a firmware update from Xbox on the Samsung, and what picture controls do you have with the Samsung over VGA exactly? Can DNIe be turned off completely on the 4095D? Any odd unresolved quirks with the 4095D??

As it is Im currently running a Westinghouse w4207 and I believe the Xbox is outputting a 16-235 signal over the VGA. Because if I turn the TV off and then turn it back on the contrast gets overblown and wont adjust(and using a THX video test disc shows that no matter how low I turn down contrast, the whites are all overblown and cannot be differntiated from one another), and from what I understand if you turn the monitor on first and then the Xbox 360 the monitor will automatically detect and adjust for the incoming input from the 360. The picture looks amazing over VGA in 720p, but the monitor must be on first before turning on other gear for proper picture.

So what should I do? Go with a slightly larger 47" 1080p LCD monitor with no tuner(and use a seperate cable box if I ever want to watch TV) or go with the 40" Samsung with possibly a bit better picture quality? I only sit 4-6 feet away from the screen.

Supposedly the Samsung has slightly better blacks and black detail. But Im already impressed with the current Westy w4207 42" 720p monitor which has good blacks I feel, and pretty accurate out of the box/user tunable color tones overall.

I'm in almost the exact same situation as you. It's actually kinda eeery how similar. Anyway, hopefully someone will provide some insight. In case it matters, I'm currently leaning towards the westinghouse, but I go back and forth almost daily.

to address the vga washing out issue... if you can adjust the picture on the vga input, you'll be fine. the washing out occurs because many tv's with vga inputs assume a PC will be inputting, and you can adjust the colors via the graphics card on the pc, rather than the tv.

the vga will help with blacks also, when compared to a component input.

either is a great choice.

heck, though, go as big as you can. if you can swing a 47, go a 47.

I am actually reviewing the Westinghouse 47w1 and the 1080p picture over VGA can look a little washed out initially but with proper picture adjustment the picture is stunning on gaming and HD-DVD. I've also hooked up the PS3 using a DVI to HDMI cable (handshake issue with HDMI) and once again the picture is stunning.

With the price difference between the Westy and the Samsung I would suggest getting the Westy

You say it was much better than the Westy, where did you see it displaed side by side? Did you adjust the picture correctly to ballpark it? And what input was used on the Westy and Samsung? The input alone can make a huge difference, especially on the Westy.

I actually didnt find any issues with "washout" before adjustments on the w4207(which I currently have)through VGA. And from what I understand the w4207 and 47w1 have the same identical processing, controls and user inputs.

Explain "reviewing" please. If you have the 47" in your possesion I assume the monitor auto detects(via EDID)and configures the VGA input to work correctly with the incoming signal correct? Please feel free to explain in detail, expand etc.

I am reviewing the Westy for my website in a feature we will be rolling out for HD gaming. Yes the Westy does autodetect on VGA, DVI and HDMI. The VGA signal looks a bit washed out initially but after adjusting the picture it looks just fine.

westy's beg for a good VGA signal. if you're primarily going with 360 and hd-dvd, it would almost be stupid to get anything else, especially at a smaller size.

get the westy 47.

Ive been very happy with the Westy w4207. So I am leaning towards another Westy product. Not sure if I want to get a 47w1 at clearance or wait and grab the new 52" model thats coming out in a few months.........
