I 'recently' changed internet provider. My current internet is ADSL and it is PPPOA. Is this usable with xbox live? I know very little about these type of internet connections.

If this IS usable, what modem/router would I need?

You should have no problem. Hopefully your speed is at least 384k. I would think your provider would give you the router you would need. If not, look into getting the Netgear DG834G by Netgear. I know it is easy to setup and supports PPPOA. But then all adsl router/modems should.

what is PPPOA

PPPOA or PPPoA, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over ATM, is a network protocol for encapsulating PPP frames in ATM AAL5. It is used mainly with cable modem, DSL and ADSL services.

It offers standard PPP features such as authentication, encryption, and compression. If it is used as the connection encapsulation method on an ATM based network it can reduce overhead slightly (around 0.58%) in comparison to PPPoE. It also avoids the issues that PPPoE suffers from, related to having a MTU lower than that of standard Ethernet transmission protocols. It also supports (as does PPPoE) the encapsulation types: VC-MUX and LLC based

You will need a router that negotiates the connection for you, e.g. a router where you have entered your user ID and password. This may or may not be the device that the service provider provides, depending on whether they're giving out a basic modem or a full-featured router. If you're relying on software on the PC side to "login" to your always-on connection (yes, a stupid concept, but one which PPPoE is based upon), then you won't simply be able to plug the Xbox directly into the modem.
