View Full Version : Canadian buying at BB - where to get a warranty that covers bulb???
jayjonbeach 03-07-07, 10:04 PM Hi There. Best buy in Canada does not cover the bulb in their warranty which almost renders it useless IMO although it would be nice to have for the right price.
I am looking at the 62hm196 Tosh or 72" DLP and I think I can get the warranty from BB for half price, $250 for 4 years. Not sure if it is worth it even still as bulb seems to be the biggest problem but there are some other expensive things that seem to happen too.
So is there anywhere else a Canadian can buy a warranty that is affordable and also covers the bulb on a DLP or should I be looking at a different store?
BTW the sets are on sale right now at a pretty good price probably because 07 models are due out ASAP. Also, I don't think Costco sells these models here or I would look there just based on the return policy I see everyone talking about).
Thanks in advance. Jay

daFlave 03-17-07, 07:23 PM I'm in the same boat with OP on this Toshiba model, it's the 62" ia $900 less the MRSP at BB canada. The only hold back I,m facing is the price of bulb replacement just in case I get unlucky!
Input will be very appreciated...please ...(have onlt 4 days left to take the plunge)
AKA BUD 03-17-07, 10:44 PM If you're asking about an extended warranty with bulb replacement, the link in my post above would apply to you also.
oscar67845 03-17-07, 11:05 PM IMO the extra warranty is usually a rip off anyway. But I understand that a RPTV with a bulb "might" not be a huge rip off if the bulb is covered. But I feel it is more than worth the gamble to not get the extra warranty anyway. At most the warranty is likely to replace the bulb once, but maybe the bulb wont go at all until after the warranty period. If it does blow then the money you would have spent on the warranty (if invested) would cover the bulb by then.

Yes, you just have to email them to set it up.
jayjonbeach 03-18-07, 02:51 PM Well I bought the 62hm196 from BB and got 10 months of free HD programming with the box included at 700 off the list, this week it is 900 off so I went back with my receipt and got 228 bucks back with the 30 day price guarantee! :D
The TV looks fantastic, especially on the HD channels and it is a STEAL at this price. I rented the movie 'Crank' last night over the digital network and it looked almost as good as the HD channels, better than regular DVD for some reason. I do have the option to order some HD movies as well albeit at a higher price and the selection isn't as good yet.
I do see a very infrequent rainbow and after watching the TV for about 6 hours yesterday my eyes did seem fatigued by the end of the night but then I usually never watch TV for more than an hour or two which will change now. I am about 11 feet back and at first I thought I might want the 72" set but now I think this was the right choice for my room and my eyes. Hopefully this won't effect my enjoyment too much, the fatigue could more than the tiny rainbow effect but I might adjust, I am used to watching a 27" at the same distance.
I did not buy the BB warranty even though they discounted it to half price (4 years 250 vs. 500) as it does not cover the bulb but it did look like a good warranty if not for that detail but 500 is way too much. That left 2 choices:
1. Purchase with visa and have 2 years of full warranty for free just paying the interest, this would of been a good option if not for the debt I have already and 2 years is kinda short.
2. Purchase a warranty from the link posted by AKA Bud (thank you) for 250 CAD and have 4 years total (1 year tosh 3 years extended) and be covered for bulb and potential expensive light engine problem, balast, etc for 4 years.
I chose the 4 year route for a couple of reasons, most being what I already stated and plus I have other debt so I took BB's 36 equal no interest payment plan for the 100 dollar admin fee. I was going to pay more than this in interest even paying off my visa with my creditline so for me it works out good.
Happy hunting! J

I've been looking at this tv and the hitachi 62vs69 at BB and FS respectively, Just this afternoon I asked for my 50% deposit I made on the hitachi @ FS and went out across the street to BB and put the cash on the 62HM196. I did asked about the 4 years extended warranty which BB reluntantly said 'No BULB' coverage to the $399 4 yeras plan. I try to swing extra $50 off but they are not playing for that without the extended warranty deal. but I got the Tv for $900 less than MSRP.
How did you got the $250 4 years warranty. The more reason purchased this TV today was because of the extended warranty mentioned above. i hope it will cover everything though !!!
How isthe QP and how are you enjoying it with Bell expressVu?
Thanks

Hi daFlave.
Best buy was trying to sell me a 4 year warranty for 500 dollars. I did not want it as it did not cover the bulb. I was negoiating with them on pricing re stand etc and one sales rep offered to give me the 4 year warranty for 250 dollars, I still did not buy it because the bulb is not covered.
I will be buying the warranty from Tapeworks Texas linked in the post above by AKA Bud, a 3 year extended warranty (1 year tosh, 3 years extended = 4 years total) for 210USD (about 250 CAD) and it covers the bulb for 3 years. If it burns out once the warranty is paid for.
The PQ is excellent on this TV for just about all formats, SD being the worst which varies quite a bit from channel to channel and some do still look quite good, I won't be watching a lot of SD however!
Good luck! Jay
daFlave 03-18-07, 06:31 PM Thanks jay.
I very sure i will get my warranty from tapeworks as well as soon as i get the delivary. Curious though, how fast is there service to canadian residence?
Did you BTW compare this model with the 62MX196 ? if yes, what's your thought? Merci encore mon ami!
AKA BUD 03-19-07, 06:09 PM The warranty from tapeworks uses local repair outlets in your area. From the Questions and Answers section of the Mack Warranty offered by Tapeworks.....
Q: Who will work on my TV if there is a problem?
A: What you should keep in mind about this warranty is that your TV will be worked on by the EXACT SAME PEOPLE as if you had no warranty at all and decided to call an authorized service center near to you to get your TV repaired on your own. The only difference is that Mack will be paying the bill instead of you, if you have the warranty. It will be worked on by the EXACT SAME PEOPLE that would perform service on the TV during the original manufacturer's warranty period as well. Mack uses the nearest authorized service center to you for the product you own to service your TV.
Use the link I provided above and check out the other listed links in that post...it should answer all your questions.
daFlave 03-19-07, 06:38 PM going...going...gone!!! TAPEWORKS IS IT !!!
Not only will I take them on, I will sure advertise 'em to friends in need.
