Hi, names Michael, and I'm new to the whole home theater game.

Heres quick specs to start:

Mitsubishi WD-57731 Tv

Yamaha HTR-5930 AV Receiver

VIP 622 DVR HD dual tuner

Xbox 360

Home PC- Amd athalon 64 x2 4400+ with a NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO w/256 MB video card

Connections are :

HDMI from dvr to tv
DVI from pc to tv
Component from 360 to tv
Digital coax from tv to AV receiver
Digital coax from pc to AV receiver
Fiber optic Toslink from 360 to AV Receiver

Problems:

tv is inside a black box all the way around images, unless I switch the format to stretch view on either the satellite or the tv itself. In stretch mode picture loses quality and becomes pixelated.

Picture is not as sharp or as clear as it was in store, this includes the HD channels

Picture from pc to tv is inside the same black box (kind of like wide screen black bars on top or bottom, but all the way around) unless I switch to a movie then the screen automatically goes to full screen, but again the picture quality isnt that great, but you would think with the video card, and the type of movies I dl that it would be a lot better.

Sound is great on the 360 but not so hot on the satellite or pc...kinda noobish with this explanation...the receiver has options like movie mode than within that you can do spacious or dramatic etc...or music, like concert hall etc...and then there the 5 channel one, which sounds the best over all but not like the 360 which has a picture of all 5.1 speakers on the display, but when I switch to the satellite it only shows 2 speaker picture L and R....

I'm not sure what else to put, so anything else needed just let me know and I will gladly post it....I know its not the best there is out there lol but its great for what I could afford, I just want the best possible picture and sound I can get, and it's not even close to what it was in the store...

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Michael

Is this for HD channels or just SD channels what res are you outputting from the satellite box?

Picture is not as sharp or as clear as it was in store, this includes the HD channels
Again it may have to do with the resolution you are outputting, make sure it is 720p or 1080i. Mine looks way better than the store setup.

What resolution are you running from the PC? I have it set to 1920x1080 and it goes past the screen so I cannot see the taskbar because of overscan. If I lower the res it does not fill the screen.

Sound will depend on the show, most shows are just in stereo but some HD shows and movies will be surround sound.

Also I changed my setting from brilliant to natural and color temp is set to low, that helped make a better picture than the store setup.

Edit: Oh yea and the TV will not pass Dolby digital sound from the HDMI through its digital coax so if you want dobly digital form your sat box you need to run an optical cable to the receiver.

Well I adjusted some of the settings as found in another thread in here, and the picture looks a lot better...I also did optical from the dvr sat box to the a/v receiver but its still not giving me the 5.1 speaker showing that my xbox 360 does, so I don't know lol...but another thing I am noticing, is that the a few of the hd channels seem to have a lot of artifacts and pixelating on fast moving scenes...so not sure if that is a result of the tv or the satellite itself...

See if there is a way in your cable box to set it to "pass through" for audio. On my Mot 3412, this gives me the best result.

If you're seeing a lot of large pixels, chances are it's in your signal. Most, if not all, STBs can correct transmission errors - to a point. I've been going through weeks of Comcast delivery problems, large pixels, and they have just about re-wired the neighborhood.

In my MOt box I can get to various menus that show the errors and their counts. If you can get access to your stsus menu, I'll bet you'll see transmission errors.
