View Full Version : Here we go again
J.Mike Ferrara 03-08-07, 09:34 AM Now that folks are beginning to get the DLA-RS1, I predict the following timeline will take place:
> March 07: 100's of posts stating that this is the best projector ever. Films mentioned: Sin City, Star Wars (Sith), Dark City, to show off black levels, minor complaints concerning low lumens. Tryg has every 10th post.
> April 07: complaints begin to appear, some units mysteriously die after 100 hours, some are dead out of the box; folks start noticing panel mis-aligment, bright corners, uneven white, tints, etc. Tryg trys to explain all these issues away.
> May 07: full scale rejection of DLA-RS1. Lots of buyer remorse. Lots of deleted posts deemed flaming; Tryg no where to be found.
> June 07 Rumors start to fly about new Sony Qualia replacement, posts double, Tryg reappears. Everyone is planning for the next CEDIA.
The perfect projector is always one that has not shipped yet.
Catdaddy67 03-08-07, 09:53 AM You forgot to add the part where the two remaining Qualia owners, throughout the entire timeline, continue to claim that the Qualia still puts out a better picture than any projector, even the RS1 (even through they havent seen it yet), and most definitely the Sim2 HT5000 because of rainbows and dithering (even if it is a 3 chip.) And they know so because they paid $30,000 for their projectors just 2 years ago. They are still happy with their Deloreans. 8)
Will Binegar 03-08-07, 09:55 AM Heywith a flux capacitor, why wouldn't you be happy with a Delorean?
jspielberg 03-08-07, 10:05 AM The flux capacitor was an aftermarket option that unforunately had some expensive consumables... and you though nitrous was a pain to get!

You bet me to the punch ;)
Chris Dallas 03-08-07, 10:27 AM These posts (like the one started here today) always seem to rise from projector owners that paid (and now stuck with since selling is not an option..too much $$$ to lose) much more than other projectors of today that actually display a much better picture at a fifth of the price.

There is some truth to this. That is why I usually buy the penultimate projector of the day and not the ultimate. BenQ W9000 is my current PJ.
My Pearl is now officially my readheaded stepchild (no offense to redheaded stepchildren though).

Isn't that what keeps these forums alive :p
Phil_Johnson 03-08-07, 11:34 AM For the price of a couple of Qualia bulbs we shouldn't expect too much out of the JVC. But I do expect to see some improvement over the 13 inch sony that now sits in my theater. If the JVC doesn't work out I can always sell it and buy a used Qualia for about the same money.
Semisentient 03-08-07, 11:44 AM You know you are talking about the JVC RS1? The projector that is even making the CRT forum tremble?? ;)
Andrikos 03-08-07, 11:44 AM The RS1 is so yesterday.
I'm waiting for the RS3 but I've seen it slammed already on the Forum.
Something about "too low of a price", "too high contrast" and "lens has too much zoom".
Are people never satisfied?
:D
Alan Gouger 03-08-07, 11:48 AM The perfect projector is always one that has not shipped yet.
Thats not true. My perfect projector is slated to ship 2011 :)
Will Binegar 03-08-07, 12:43 PM The flux capacitor was an aftermarket option that unforunately had some expensive consumables... and you though nitrous was a pain to get!
Actually, consumables were almost free... once you ponied up the purchase price for a Mr Fusion
William 03-08-07, 01:38 PM Thats not true. My perfect projector is slated to ship 2011 :)
Doesn't that mean "it hasn't shipped yet"? :D
Jason Turk 03-08-07, 01:45 PM Ouch.

Isn't the RS-1 next years paid to much for it last year item?
Enjoy what you have until it breaks... Sometimes it might need a little help, just don't tell my wife :D
Pultzar 03-08-07, 01:56 PM Every 5th post :)
LOL!!!
Alan Gouger 03-08-07, 01:59 PM Doesn't that mean "it hasn't shipped yet"? :D
True but its in the pipe line. I was told 2 more weeks :)
fretman 03-08-07, 02:22 PM With highly elevated/inflated expectations, there is only one way to go, and it ain't up! In my experience, many things I have been in the stratosphere over have not panned out.
There are a few exceptions. The birth of my son, getting my drivers license, my first car (it was a P.O.S.) but hey, it was my first! I'm trying to keep my expectations earthbound for my RS1.
That "Two Weeks" thing was a long time ago and I can't remember who the heck it was that was promising two weeks over and over anymore.
Sim, Marantz ?? Second thing to go :) and it's driving me nutz.
mark haflich 03-08-07, 02:37 PM Dwin, you moron. :) If you ever play the FP HT trivia game and expect to mount a serious challenge to Darin, you need to know this. DWIN
Alan. Your problem is that you believe everything you are told. :) OK OK Cows can fly.
Alan Gouger 03-08-07, 02:44 PM Mark

Thanks smartass :) just wait untll you can't remember shi t that means nothing and have drool running down your chin. he he..
So what's this thread about Mike ? Is the sky is falling on the JVC RS1 ? Is so, probably because one self appointed expert "reviewer" made a cockeyed comment I'd bet. I better catch up my reading.
J.Mike Ferrara 03-08-07, 03:16 PM So what's this thread about Mike ?
1) Overinflated expectations
2) Perfectionism
3) Never being satisfied

5) Petty jealousy . . .
Oh, have I just described requirements for AVS membership? :p

Hey Art, thanks for reminding me:
6) Black level fetish ;)
PS - Let's put together a power buy - your 2 G90s and my 004, all for one low price.
Thats not true. My perfect projector is slated to ship 2011 :)
Mine too !! And I'll buy it from you !!!
:D
Art Sonneborn 03-08-07, 04:29 PM Interstingly, if you think about the rate of change, what is on the horizon ,etc 2011 is about right for when we will get what we think about today as the ideal projector. The problem is, by then, we will have raised the bar dozens of times. :(
Art
millerwill 03-08-07, 04:32 PM Well, my RS1 arriving tomorrow will be my first ever projector, so I will obviously be impressed. Seems like a great time to be entering this game, but I agree with all above that this will not be the last word.
mark haflich 03-08-07, 05:13 PM I wonder if Art has a black negligee fetish? He is into perforated screens and a really big stack set or a G (ninety) string if you will.

The list should be bumped down a month,
April should read:
Calibration workarounds and excuses will begin to surface. The forums divide into 2 camps: Staunch Loyalists/ Told you so's.
Capitulation occurs the following month.
Let's not forget:
"Mine is defective"
"My unit has the XYZ problem"

DanHouck 03-08-07, 07:16 PM Mike, it is clear that you have spent waaay tooo much time here. You have the place figured out. I guess the only thing left for you to do is go climb Mount Everest or something on that order.
BTW, we bottom feeders will be waiting here to buy those discarded projectors at 20 cents on the dollar.
LOL :D
santellavision 03-08-07, 07:47 PM Let's not forget:
"Mine is defective"
"My unit has the XYZ problem"
Are you guys reading the "Owners Thread' at all? Forget next month, it's all happening right now. The XYZ problem has already started.
I would only be surprised if:
a) A projector as popular as the RS1 is and will grow to be DOESN'T have a reasonable number of users with problem units given the large population of RS1 owners.
or
b) The ratio of RS1 problem-report posts : 'normal' discussion/tweak/praise posts is even higher than the HD7100 / H710.
Statistically, I expect that it will fall in-between the two extremes.
Joseph Clark 03-09-07, 03:30 AM Are you guys reading the "Owners Thread' at all? Forget next month, it's all happening right now. The XYZ problem has already started.
This problem is mis-stated. It's not an XYZ problem with projectors; it's an XY chromosome problem with the male of our species. Every projector on the market today has achieved the same statistical level of perfection. That is, on a scale of 1,000,000, each projector has achieved a level of perfection that lies somewhere between .001 and 3. It's the tiny Y chromosome of the male that allows him to see 999,986 when there's only a 2 in front of him.
BTW, I am from 200,000 years into the future. We have projectors then that are 37's.
Mark Petersen 03-09-07, 04:04 AM You forgot to add the part where the two remaining Qualia owners, throughout the entire timeline, continue to claim that the Qualia still puts out a better picture than any projector, even the RS1 (even through they havent seen it yet), and most definitely the Sim2 HT5000 because of rainbows and dithering (even if it is a 3 chip.) And they know so because they paid $30,000 for their projectors just 2 years ago. They are still happy with their Deloreans. 8)

Good job.
baileyler 03-09-07, 01:02 PM Mike,
Call me when you are ready to give me the same great deal I got for your old 20HD.

As a happy Dwin HD-700 owner, I can relate to that! :o
But, my RS1 will be on its way... hopefully soon! :D
You guys just need to have my eyesight which has settled to the point that everything looks rosey, I can't see pixels from nowhere and can't tell the difference of any input anymore. Life is good. Maybe I should take off the red filters ducttaped to my eyelids?

The Dwin CRT was my last CRT. Brings back good memories. I loved it for its small foot print and silent operation.
Congrats on the RS1!

I have an ole 640x480 LCD projector your gonna love. Composite input only but Im telling you it looks just as good as HDMI. Who needs that new connector anyway. Thanks for telling me you can no longer see pixel structure, dont let the low pixel spec fool you, this thing is smooth as can be with no visible screen door, my great grand dad calls it like it is. I can let you have this for a little less then the RS1 but wait !! thats not all...Ill even throw in a Mac service waranty :) :)
Jason Turk 03-09-07, 08:16 PM Ah the ole' Sharp 37 LCD...many-a-bad memories with that thing. :)

You could add in the "pre-owners" and then "owners" thread to the standard forum model. Maybe even a "first user report" thread. Sometimes I think folks try and start some of these early just to get their names tagged on a long thread. :) I really like when the owner thread starts with folks who pre-ordered but really have nothing to report. Great stuff.... SJ
Swearengen 03-11-07, 11:21 AM I haven't got my RS1 yet, I haven't even seen a HD projector in function. I only once popped by a store, with a 37" LCD playing HD and it didn't look that great. Mind you, this is Denmark and HD is far away from most of us. Few can watch HD channels at all.
Yesterday I put on "16 Blocks" (a popcorn flick, I know!) and set the Z4 bulb on high mode for the first time ever. Always run ecomode. And I thought the picture was absolutely beautiful. Great spot on colors, free from edge enhancements, artifacts, whatever. Thorough enjoyment.
I realise I haven't got a clue, whatsoever, what the RS1 is all about. I can't pretend what the picture will look like, first time I put on King Kong or Casablanca. It is really the joy of expectation and hopefully, is is not the greatest ;)
Ah the ole' Sharp 37 LCD...many-a-bad memories with that thing. :)
I still have a Sharp 55 LCD kicking around... I can assure you your memories are accurate! :D
Adam Gutierrez 03-11-07, 01:19 PM Ah the ole' Sharp 37 LCD...many-a-bad memories with that thing. :)
Jason, the Sharpvision 37U was my very first projector too!!! Those HUGE diamond shaped pixels!!! And it stood up on it's side. Wow, haven't thought about that POS is a long time. At the time it was the most wonderful picture I had ever seen. I had it showing on some beaded glass Sharp screen and the beads were as big around as your thumbnail. But when I popped in my $80 dollar Terminator laser disc from Ken Cranes (are still around?), all was right with the world. Now to think back on it.... UGH!
In the year 2525, If projectors still alive, when Plasma and LCD monitors reach 120" and beyond in size . . . . :p :p :p
mark haflich 03-11-07, 03:31 PM There won't be plasma and LCD monitors in 2025! Sony has this new technology LED or SED )(I don't remember) they showed at the dealer line show. only showed an 11 incher. It will take 2 or 3 years until we see that in 60 or 70 inch, but look out. It puts everything else I have seen to shame. Very very thin and light. A 50 incher can be carried by a tiny person from room to room.

The invention brought to attention this week, a material with a refractive index of 1.05, indicating how material reflects light (air has a refractive index of 1.00), can help LED technology to become far more efficient.
J.Mike Ferrara 03-11-07, 06:24 PM I don't think I'll buy another FP. Too high maintenence.
I'm ready for 100" flat panel - with the next technology of course. SED, whatever....
larryep 03-16-07, 07:56 PM i still use my sharp 37. notice how it keeps the dust off the carpet in my closet. :D
