View Full Version : How dark is dark enough?

My wife has green-lighted the painting of our family room, which will soon be home to an RS1 projector and 100" screen. The room has very good (but not perfect) light control, and I'm going to paint the walls and ceiling.

My question is, how do I know whether a color I like is dark enough and neutral enough and otherwise suitable to my theater? Is there a thread on this to which you can point me? Is there a rule of thumb? Are there a group of colors (from some common store like Benjamin Moore) that people really like in their theaters? I know that everyone is a fan of burgandy, but what about other colors like dark brown?

What's the collective wisdom of the forum on this?

Jeff,

Earth tones in a matte finish seem to be the most widely used. The colors really depend greatly on whether the room is going to be a dedicated space or a multi-function room (like a living room that becomes a theater when required). There are lots to look as far as finished rooms but I don't know of any thread that shows paint samples like your requesting it is just to subjective. I would just go as dark as your comfortable with and as long as you and yours like it that is the best color for your room ;)
Cheers
