Where are the Twin Discs?
Have any Twin Discs actually been made for sale? Either dual or triple layer varieties?
Are the Twin Discs harder to produce than Combo discs? or just a newer spec?

That's what I'm wondering. Memory Tech had a PR that spoke on the cost of TD as being acceptable and the ability to make them on fairly standard hardware but to date we've heard nothing since TL Twin Disc was sent to the DVD Forum for ratification or whateva they do.

The only drawback with the first generation TWIN disc was its limited capacity: support for 15GB of HD DVD content and 4.7GB of DVD content. The new 3-layer disc meets demand from movie studios and software companies in North America and Japan for a capacity boost, and offers double the maximum capacity for each format.
The new disc also maintains two defining features of the HD DVD format: a low cost and highly efficient manufacturing process. Memory-Tech has developed a new disc manufacturing procedure that adds an additional process to form the third layer, but does so on the same disc replication machines that can be used for DVD and HD DVD mass production.
The newly announced disc is the latest addition to the DVD TWIN format, discs that support both DVD and HD DVD content and that are fully compatible with both formats. The new disc boosts capacity and expands versatility with a three-layer structure offering support for two HD DVD layers and one DVD layer or two DVD layers and one HD DVD layer. Memory-Tech and Toshiba will propose the new disc to the HD DVD Forum, the industry body that defines DVD standards.
These would be better than combos for a variety of reason. Disc Art, no need to flip disc and hopefully production costs. The A2 even has a menu selection for Twin Disc.
Costs forced on HD DVD owners?
I also have a hard time believing that they will even function properly(Consistently), considering the issues we already have with 2 layer discs/players
I think they'd be better off getting the format working better than it is B4 they try and add anything to it.... still too many bugs.

If they can get these to work in all existing SD DVD players this would be a great way to get everything to switch over to HD-DVD. You throw the disc in a standard player with art down you get the SD version. Throw it in a HD-DVD player and get HD version throw it in a Blu Ray and get SD. :p
No confusion and we get to keep the artwork. Studio could start release all movies in the twin format to phase out SD. If only...

I would be great if they could bring the triple layer version of the twin disc to market at a reasonable price.
Hopefully that what Universal is working on.
May be its HD-DVD secret arsenal for the future; kind of like the DVD forums countermeasure to a runaway PS3 success, if that ever happens.
