I use a 120 mm fan running at 12v using AC->DC wall wart adapter ($10 at Wallyworld) with 120->80 mm fan adaptor on my front air intake grill (R side of lens) of my HD1000u to lower the exhaust temp from 143'F to 108'F when measured with digital indoor/outdoor thermometer wilth wire as pictured above at the exhaust grill on the L side of the lens. This is in low lamp mode. The fan noise is not noticeable over the baseline fan noise of the HD1000u in low lamp mode. The 120 mm fan is Yate Loon D12SL-12 and fan adapter were bought at Nexfan website ($4 for fan and $2.25 for fan adapter+shipping):

Without fan adapter, 120 mm is too big and overshoot the air intake grill wasting air flow (temp. only dropped to 128-129'F without adapter and 107-108'F with adapter). It's placed at a slight angle to allow air flow even if I forget to turn on the fan (minimal temp change with fan in place and not running (144'F) compared to no fan in place (143'F)--suggesting that fan placement does NOT impair airflow that much even when not running).

I just lay a bag of ice on top of mine. Works great at least once.
