...what am I hearing through the analog outs with Total Recall? Is it possible to add DTS HD MA decoding through a firmware update? All of Studio Canal's imports use it from what I can tell, and it'd be nice to actually hear it.

Most likely you are hearing the core DTS track.

No announcement has been made regarding a DTS HD MA firmware update for the G1 players. It's not known if this is due to technical reasons or other. One more of those 'time will tell' situations :).

What about the G2 players, like the Toshiba HD-A2? Will that have DTS HD MA with a firmware update?
Robert mentioned, that the G2 players were going to get DTS-HD MA in a FW release.
Whether or not it actually happens, is still to be seen, but he stated that they told him it was coming.

Seems to be a much bigger deal for Blu Ray anyhow. Are there ANY available or announced HD-DVD's with DTS-MA? I've only seen Dolby True HD. Blu-Ray OTOH seem to have quite a few coming out with DTS-MA.

My count: Globally, 39 HD DVDs have DTS-HD MA tracks.
In the U.S., only 2 so far:

Here's my guess. They haven't released the DTS-HD upgrade yet b/c they want to release it simultaneously for both gen1 and gen2 players. I believe they have had it written for some time for gen2. I believe this b/c DTS demonstrated DTS-HD MA at CES using a Toshiba player (can't remember which one, but either A2 or A20).
With as much versatility built into the 1st gen models I'm very confident that DTS-HD can be added via FW upgrade until somebody tells me different. I'm guessing another thing putting it on hold cold be DTS. On their website when they unveiled the DTS-HD varieties they used to have 3 listed (MA, High Resolution Audio, Encore) as well as generic DTS-HD (same old DTS as higher bitrate). Now they only have 2 listed (MA, High Resolution Audio) as well as general DTS-HD. Maybe its b/c they keep changing things? Not sure why they need more than 2 anyway. It would make perfect sense to have 1 that is very similar to Dolby Digital Plus (maybe DTS-HD) and then one that is very similar to Dolby Digital True HD (DTS MA).
That's my 2 cents, but I'm hoping it IS possible for gen1 players b/c that's what I have :)
