Hi, this is my first post on this forum. I Just recently won a $4000 BB gift card and are looking at getting a 37" LCD, a receiver and some speakers. Looking to get the front 3. the BP7002, 7004 and 7006 Def techs and the Klipsch Ref IV's look interesting. The 7002's are probably over budget. Any suggestions?

+1 vote for Ref IV - I love mine. I auditioned the DT's among others and chose the Klipsch.

But, those are my ears. Best thing to do is go demo them yourself.

I did audition both but I focused more on the Klipsch because with the Def Techs being bi-polar they are more placement dependant and were not set up ideally.

+1 for Klipsch, easy on the eyes and just a pleasure to listen to. Demo them both and see what you come up with.

Tough choice isn't it? Def techs are awesome for HT. Klipsch Ref midrange is more refined IMO. But those are my ears. I'd still give Klipsh an edge. By the way, is Klipsch Ref sold at BB?

I am a Klipsch owner and love them. If the gift card is for BB, I will bet you your card they will try to push the Def Tech. :D That is my experience anyway.

Yes, at BB/magnolia stores you will find the Reference Series.

Well, I brought home a pair of Def Tech bp7006 to try. The "cupped hands" honk of the klipsch horns were very noticable to me. Anyway, the 7006's were floor models with a 30% discount so I thought I'd try them at home. They are quite awesome actually but I think I will return them for the 7004's. The 7006's are rather short and seem lost visually in my large living room, despite their big open sound, and the tweeters are below ear level. My rear channel DCM towers are bigger than the 7006's. Besides, if these sound this good, imagine what the 7004's will sound like. My room seems ideally set up for the bi-polar design, with a huge soundstage emanating from the Def Techs.

Congrats. Sounds like you got what sounded better to you. Glad to see you are moving up to the 04's. Tell us what you think when you get them up and running...

What receiver did you go with?

I went with the yamaha HTR-5960. The comparable RX-V 659 received an awesome review on audioholics. So far I love it. Master and Commander was great in 7.1 Dolby DX

Thought I should give an update. I returned the def techs and got a pair of RF-82s along with a RC-52 center. After putting some listening hours with the def techs, I decided they were great for movies but not so great with music, which I mostly listen to. I was waiting for them to break in and the midrange to bloom out but it never did. I think I was getting some phase cancellation off the back wall with the bipoles. Am I glad I took the 3 hour trip to exchange them with the Klipsch. I am much happier now. The BB return policy turned out to be a very good thing. Now I need to find a cheap, musical sub.

I always thought that Klipsch speakers were to bright sounding. I bought my Def. Tech. 2000's about 7 yrs. ago and thought they were alot better in the mid and bass regions. Klipsch hurt my ears.

i couldn't stand Klipsch for music when i auditioned them. DT sounded way better for that, imo, and they both sounded good for movies, so my vote would totally be for the DT.

The new Klipsch Refs are completely different than the old Klipsch Refs. They got rid of the brightness, and replaced it with a very smooth, possibly overly-smooth, balance. A lot of people who liked the old Klipsch Refs are upset with the tonality of the newer ones. I wouldn't be surprised if they rolled down a lot of their experience and technology from the Ultra series. They possibly even overcompensated in an attempt to get rid of the 'bright' stigma they've had for quite a few years now.

That detailed sound is exactly why I chose Klipsch over def tech. To each his/her own :)

The new RF-82s are some of the least-bright budget speakers I have ever heard. Possibly the best overall value out there for the price point.

Actually, to my ears the def techs had the highs and the lows but no midrange.

If the klipsch's are too bright that may be an advantage as my ears are seasoned callused veterans, over exposed to rock concerts and loud motorbikes and bright is probably flat to me.

That is an interesting thought. It is assumed that well all hear things exactly the same but that is not the case. I have definitives and love 'em. You are happy with your klipsch set up. There is no right or wrong speakers, it is all in the ear of the beholder.
