been waiting for this one thanks for the update :)
sharkshark 03-10-07, 12:28 AM it's a beautiful mess, this flick... This release should make some happy, others bored and annoyed. At the least, the macrophotography will probably look better at home than at the multiplex.

Have to agree. I'll be going for the BD on this one as I did with the Departed.
divianb 03-10-07, 01:51 AM Darren Aronofsky.
This is a blind purchase.
...and I do not think combos are the worst enemy of HD DVD.
It has been almost a year since we are seeing combos and they proved to be popular.
BassTek 03-10-07, 02:11 AM The only reason I would consider getting it is due to Darren Aronofsky. Might be a blind purchase for me as well, hard to say.

Combo  I will take the BD - thank you very much.
I won't since I don't have a Blu-ray player.
Every NEW (i.e. not catalog) title released from this day forward from Warner and Universal will be a combo, guys. You should stop getting upset every time it's announced.

I like complaining :)
btw Universal went from their initial plan to release 90% combos in 07 to all catalog on HD30 and "just" the new releases on combo. So there is hope after all.
I think it would be especially good for HD-DVD if they don't use combos for new releases - after all many (I suppose most) dual format owners will buy the cheaper BD version instead. I buy it to avoid the "flipper" - don't care about the $5.
TheCrackedJack 03-10-07, 03:49 AM BD for me on this one. Combos can burn in fiery pits of hell as far as I'm concerned.

Unfortunately, the BD versions are not always equivalent... (i.e. audio formats, etc).

I won't either, for the same reason.....
I'll just end up buying all new releases I have interest in, in SD instead, which is pretty sad really.. :(
BassTek 03-10-07, 03:03 PM I'm going to go out and spend $600 on a PS3 so I don't have to deal with these expensive combos anymore!!!

lol.
So really, it's only WARNER with a price disparity on combos between formats - they are favouring BD then.
TheCuze 03-10-07, 03:43 PM As much as I support Blu-Ray generally over HD-DVD, the BD disc is only going to be on a single layer BD-25, which causes concern as it pretty much rules out the PCM track I'm sure everyone is hoping for. Than again though, if Warner does go their usual route, that'd mean a VC-1 transfer and extra features in SD. Plus, it's a short film (under 90 minutes), so who knows, maybe it'll fit...

I'm not upset at all, it just makes the decision about which format to get easier. Any Warner release that is a combo will be a BD purchase if available. When it comes to Universal and combos, I just bite the bullet if it is a movie I really want or I just wait. At least I have the option with WB. Format neutral studios FTW!
I missed this in theaters so, it will be a blind buy. Even with all the mixed reviews, it always looked really intriguing to me.
It's amazing that you guys are crying over $4 (per the Amazon price). I guess Americans are truly cheap.
I guess Americans are truly cheap. Were did I hear that before. :D
ricwhite 04-05-07, 07:03 PM I always laugh as to which "reviews" they post on the "official" release information. Overall, it was considered a "rotten" movie (at rottentomatoes.com). However, compared with many other movies others on this forum raved about, this is much better. I guess it depends on what somebody considers a "good" movie.
At best, this sounds like a rental to me. But thanks for the information.
BuGsArEtAsTy 04-05-07, 09:09 PM ...and I do not think combos are the worst enemy of HD DVD.
It has been almost a year since we are seeing combos and they proved to be popular.
Well, in this thread alone, they lost four sales on the combos.
FatiusJeebs 04-05-07, 09:22 PM Netflix first. Gotta check it out before i buy it.
Tim Glover 04-05-07, 11:20 PM It is kind of strange how some find the $4 difference for the combo such a deciding factor when most of us have invested thousands of $$ into our movie collections AND thousands more for our Home Theaters. But $4 can almost get a Value Meal at McDonalds. :)...buy a coke at the movie theater....or can help support HD DVD. ;) :)
Done deal for me on HD DVD of course.
Let's make it nice and large so we can read the back. :)

jason10mm 04-06-07, 08:44 AM I thought it was pretty decent. It gives you the distinct impression that there is more going on than you realize. So you can choose to spend a lot of time trying to figure it out, or just sit back be moderately amazed at the visuals and the acting. It doesn't quite pack the gut punch I think the director intends, but it was a good flick. I saw it in some trashy theater lit by a 20 watt bulb, so I am very excited to finally see the movie in all its glory.
rover2002 04-24-07, 11:28 AM I get the feeling this will be a double dipper. Here is what IMDb says about the rating: "Rated PG-13 for some intense sequences of violent action, some sensuality and language. (edited for re-rating; originally R) "
IMDb The Fountain (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414993/)
So i guess at some point later this year we will get the Unrated version also?

Same here. Hell, D-Nice, I'd pay more for a non Combo (or Blu-Ray) version. I find that I get more scratches on those combos than anything else. They just bug me and many other people.

Its not about being cheap, its about being smart. Those who do want the combos are thinking about the long term. Eventually, that $4 to $5 adds up. If it weren't for the combo prices, people would probably buy more. (A $19 movie sounds a lot better than a $27.99 movie)
Thats why I don't like the combos. There too expensive, we're paying for something we don't want, and (if we only have a HD DVD player) we only have one choice for high definition movies.
By the way, I don't think it is a good idea to make a blind purchase with an artistic movie. Artistic movies have a niche audience. Now the visuals may look amazing but don't be surprised if you are mixed about the story. I personally liked it but people I saw it with did not like it. It was too slow for them.
stevenjw 04-24-07, 12:20 PM Like the man said earlier, the extra money charged by WB for the combo sucks and I don't support it. Universal got the message (thanks to Amir for presenting our dislike of the extra costs). Unfortunately, WB did not. I pre-ordered my BD copy a while back. $4 saved is, well, $4 saved to put towards something else, not a DVD side that I'll never use.

Aronofsky has stated on multiple occassions that the PG-13 version is his final cut. It was originally slapped with an R, but Aronofsky pleaded to the MPAA to give it a PG-13. So what you'll see on May 15th is his official cut.
That being said, I can't wait for this. I've seen it twice in theaters and it's a very rich and dense experience.
TheCuze 04-24-07, 02:05 PM I don't think that Universal yeilded to consumer angst so much as practicality. For new releases, it makes sense to release it as a combo, but for catalogue discs, chances are that early adopters who love those films already own them on sd-dvd and are double-dipping, so why would they need the version of the film that they already own.
That said, the pricing does suck, but I also kind of like that these new releases are combos. Universal day-and-dates are primarily what I buy for HD-DVD, and I like the fact that they are future proof, just in case HD-DVD does end up losing the format war.
stevenjw 04-24-07, 02:10 PM ...and I like the fact that they are future proof, just in case HD-DVD does end up losing the format war.
Huh? So, if HD-DVD fails, you're going to start watching the SD-DVD side?
Maybe someone should make a separate thread for the combo discussion. Or is there already one?
tbass2k 04-24-07, 02:19 PM A bunch of friends watched this with me and we all hated it, the ending was horrible. Be very careful about preordering this if you hate sucky endings. I think a bunch of hippies voted this up on imdb.
HIPPIES RULE! :p
The Warner combos work fine for me, although I prefer NON-COMBO WB!!!!!
I pre-ordered it from WB with the 28% discounts. If it sux, I'll dump it. It really looks like a hit or miss movie. The visuals part alone should make it worth checking out.

Did they switch to printing the "Combo Format" phrase on the cover and not the case or is it just a mistake?

What was so horrible about the ending? I've seen it months ago, only once, but I remember really liking this movie, especially the ending.
MichaelHDDVD 04-25-07, 05:26 PM Huh? So, if HD-DVD fails, you're going to start watching the SD-DVD side?
Nope, if HD DVD fails.... and that is a big if. Then I can still watch the HD DVD in my HD DVD player
Now back on topic...
I didn't see this movie, but the visuals in the preview look real nice. However I am disappointed that the DD+ track is 640 kbps. HD DVD releases should be DD+ 1.5 mbps standard.
Did they switch to printing the "Combo Format" phrase on the cover and not the case or is it just a mistake?
That's always how Warner has done them, Universal puts it on the actual case cause it would get in the way of their 'swoosh' if it was on the cover art.
Dahlsim 04-25-07, 11:06 PM Same here. Hell, D-Nice, I'd pay more for a non Combo (or Blu-Ray) version. I find that I get more scratches on those combos than anything else. They just bug me and many other people.
Unfortunately a lot mainstream consumers are likely to be just as 'bugged' by the idea that they can't play any of these new format dvds on any of their many, many dvd players.
Sure this may seem not to matter to early adopters that want high def only but if mainstream buyers stay with DVD then high def disks will remain niche formats for a long time, which translates to a LOT less content on HD then SD for the foreseeable future.
People are still buying tons of standard dvd players and most content is going to follow those players. Sure the price is a problem, but "in principal" HD content owners would be wise to piggy back on the success of SD DVD rather than try to completely replace it.
MichaelHDDVD 04-25-07, 11:12 PM I'll probably grab this one. The visuals in the preview look really nice, if it gets a good rating on visuals I will definetly buy it.
shadowrage 04-26-07, 12:12 AM The Fountain gets an HD release but not Pan's Labyrinth. I didn't think the Fountain even broke even at the box office.
It looks like an awful movie, but the HD visuals are probably saweet.
Sunshine is my most wanted on HD.
I heard that the Fountain is a remake of Zardoz.
When's that coming to HD?
casper77 04-26-07, 12:23 AM A combo with only DD+ , That's a shame. I would have love to get this one if it had TrueHD :D

Unfortunately, Warner usually encodes at 640k, so it will probably not live up to its potential audio-wise. I don't understand why we aren't seeing mre lossless from HD DVD, especially WB. They have already proven they can pull it off quite well.

i thought since both version HD-DVD/BD have a DD+ plus its not worth spending more money on the combo... if the combo would have a tHD sound it would be worth the money... and yes DD+ still sounds great on my A2.... :D

yep, according to HighDefDigest this one is encoded @ 640 kbps
I wish DD+ 1.5 mbps was the standard

I wonder if one of these days they'll test a single release : no SD, only HD DVD/DVD combo, same price as a DVD...
bboisvert 04-26-07, 10:35 AM I get the feeling this will be a double dipper. Here is what IMDb says about the rating: "Rated PG-13 for some intense sequences of violent action, some sensuality and language. (edited for re-rating; originally R) "

My understanding is that there were NO cuts/edits to get the re-rating. They simply appealed and got the rating reduced.
And given the $20 million that Warner already blew on the failed Pitt/Blanchett version and the fact that final version only made $15 million worldwide... I don't expect to see a recut of this any time soon.
Giles37 04-26-07, 10:42 AM it's a beautiful mess, this flick... This release should make some happy, others bored and annoyed. At the least, the macrophotography will probably look better at home than at the multiplex.
catalog me under as one being 'bored and annoyed' with this film... I agree, the 35mm print I saw in the theatre looked simply hideous.
awmurray 04-26-07, 11:06 AM It has been a while since I saw this, but I'm not sure the soundtrack warrants a TrueHD track.
It would be nice, of course, to have the "best", but in this case I don't care. I loved this movie but it is very dialog driven.
Be very careful about a blind buy if you don't like Darren Aronofsky's other works such as Pi and Requiem for a Dream. This is not a film for everyone.
I remember people saying "what the hell?" at the ending of this in the theater. This is a movie where you'll pick up on things the second and third time you watch it that you didn't follow/realize the first time. It is somewhat ambiguous such that different people can interpret it in different ways. I don't usually like movies like that, but here it works (for me, at least).
Anyhow, I really enjoyed it and I've been looking forward to the HD DVD release ever since I saw it in the theater.
