View Full Version : Nintendo trick works with HD-DVD's!
lemming75 03-10-07, 11:11 AM After growing tired of freezes, skips and complete lock ups; I decided it was time to try something new. I used the "old-school-nintendo-trick." Which means before I put the disc in, I level it to my lips and blow across the surface while spinning it. Currently, my A1 has been running 48 hours straight without a single glitch!
Anyone else tried this?
You know that actually can kill your player? The moisture from your mouth gets inside and gets on the components. Water + electrical devices= death.
All those years people did that on their NES was actually doing more harm than good.
Big Brad 03-10-07, 12:54 PM Actually I think he blew on the disc. It would be kind of hard to spin the player. :)

lemming75 03-10-07, 12:56 PM I'm not drooling all over it. But thanks for the safety tip. Knowing is half the battle.

Ripper64 03-10-07, 03:41 PM How about the old Xbox games trick by boiling the disc for a few seconds..LOL.
Geoff D 03-10-07, 07:09 PM My D1 has been fairly well behaved, but it's started to get pretty fragile recently, with Hulk locking up the player, Mission Impossible taking several attempts to load and Mi2 glitching like crazy during the first half hour.
Lately I've been cleaning my discs before playback in the manner the OP describes, and I've had just two minor glitches during the last 15 hours of viewing on my D1.

Why not do the toothpaste trick?
I heard it works for basic CDs...couldn't hurt.
hd nOOb 03-10-07, 07:56 PM Man that made laugh, brought back memories.
Green marker around the edges, anyone?? :D
NoThru22 03-10-07, 11:54 PM Why don't you boil the discs like the Xbox Magazine discs?
ricwhite 03-11-07, 12:14 AM A much better solution is to put the discs in the dishwasher (just slightly bend them between the rungs), and throw in some Cascade. Think of "pot scrubber" as "disc scrubber." They will be spiffy clean and will play flawlessly. But DO NOT put on HEATED DRYING!! I ruined 23 HD DVDs with that! They were all badly warped. I tried playing one in my A1 but it made a very loud screeching noise and, soon, smoke was coming out of the player. Luckily I bought the discs at Costco, and was able to return them all even though they didn't fit in the cases anymore.
ricwhite 03-11-07, 12:21 AM There is a much more serious problem with blowing on the disc and then inserting it into a player. About four years ago, there was that case of the teenage boy who did that with his game system discs and then a short time later got sick and died. Other members of the household also got sick.
When the haz-mat people went through the house, they discovered high readings in the boy's bedroom. It was later discovered that the moisture on the blown discs caused bacteria laden mold to grown within the game system and then be blown out into the household air via the system exhaust. That same year, it was estimated that over 4,000 people worldwide got sick from toxic mold from blowing on disc. They attributed 13 deaths to it.

ricwhite 03-11-07, 12:43 AM According to the British Magazine "SolutionZ 4U", one method that has proven very successful in getting slightly scratched discs to play is by peeing on them. Apparently, the acidic nature of the urine buffs out small imperfections and scratches on the discs and, in most cases, makes them playable again.
If you're going to try this with your HD DVDs, I would suggest doing this in the bathroom.

Wouldn't Vinegar be far more effective if a simple acid could fix things?
Not to mention far easier.
Chris Rein 03-11-07, 12:07 PM Oh, I thought you were going to say bang the top of the console (in this case unit) while the game is going and cause the cartridge to pop up and make the screen flash from blue to white.
:p

I always wanted to go that way! I'll stop steam-cleaning my discs right away.
nakedeye 03-11-07, 01:04 PM Best thread EVER
sean111 03-11-07, 01:21 PM how about uv irradiation after dishwashing? (make sure you avoid gamma rays around your hulk hd-dvd) or we could make the disks out of titanium and autoclave them. seriously, i wonder about accumulation of dust in the player, maybe i will spray some compressed air in there. of course, i have always been a fan of banging on things as well. :p i'll see if we can get some photo electro-micrographs of the disk surface to rule out bacterial infection, and i think a surface biposy is in order. someone call greg house. then let's cat scan it just for kicks!
ricwhite 03-11-07, 02:47 PM One solution that has worked in the past for me is the old mattress trick. Get all of your problematic HD DVDs or discs of any type, really. Have somebody lift the top mattress that you use. Carefully place the discs with the data side facing up on the mattress. Make sure you leave about six inches between each disc. Carefully lower the top mattress down on the discs.
Over the course of several days (nights really), the regular “motion” of the mattress causes a slight “buffing” action on the discs and buffs out slight imperfections and minor scratches. Deep scratches require a much more aggressive action. I usually tell my wife we have deep scratches in the discs even if we don’t. Then we go to town. :D Two to three nights for our last batch. Discs play perfectly now.
Urinating on the discs is the best way to fix them.
Anybody want to buy my Children Of men DVD?

One thing I forgot to mention -- rinse them off afterward.
Urinating on the discs is the best way to fix them.
I do that on every dvd I rent from blockbuster and netflix. :p
Have you tried cleaning your HD-DVD drive using a DVD Laser lense cleaner (It looks like a DVD with a small brush on it)
My Kenwood Sovereign 5700 DVD player I thought was dead... it wouldnt even spin up discs. Tried a DVD cleaner by maxell(no fluids)... and it worked. Took like 20 tries... but it worked. (apparently, the DVD would spin slowly to verify that it was a DVD, then it would spin up)

jrumpff 03-12-07, 06:41 AM I find it's best to iron the disk. Cover the disk in two layers of yellow tissues, (white will not work) then set your iron upon it (making sure its on a medium heat setting).. Leave it sitting.. Grab yourself a cuppa tea.. Come back, and wholoa! One smoking black parcel.... Don't let looks deceive you.. The tissues will now be infused to your disk providing a protection that money can not possibly buy..I do this to to every disk before I play....

tissues with or without lotion in them?
jrumpff 03-12-07, 06:52 AM Aloa Vera Tissues are a big no No... Also stay clear of any floral decorated boxes, they seem to overly emphasise the green colour..

Hmm, now it's actually literal and not just how I feel about the format/Sony

Weren't we talking about making these into shirts, and walking around BB, at one point?
:( and here I had my A1 remote control in hand ready to do the:

30 guys to start with in Contra?
Edit: I just had to look it up, and it is close but not exact: Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Select Start
SeanTPatton 03-15-07, 09:26 AM I do that on every dvd I rent from blockbuster and netflix. :p
hmmm i guess i should stop licking every dvd i rent from netflix to clean them... :(
Chicken blood and rum work well.
Especially if you light a candle to baba legba at the same time.
Sometimes it also makes your enemies sick and makes women fall in love with you.
oooooohhh baba legba.... ooooohhhh baba legba

:D :D :D OMG... I almost died laughing. I love that pic!
sharkshark 03-15-07, 12:09 PM I myself save up several weeks worth of my POE (Purity of Essence), dilute the seed with some distilled rain water (chosen to avoid floridation), and gently massage the solution into the mechanism of the player, the slots atop my receiver, the cones of my Center Chanel and Left Back surround speakers ONLY, and a lubricated coating on the outside of my power cord for good measure.
I never, repeat, -never- do anything to the discs. That would be foolish.
And, to confirm, that bird above is pretty spectacular. I'm going to print it out and use it in the production of my next batch of Formula 401.
