View Full Version : So Confused about HD Disc Players!

I could not be more confused now than when I started my research on what HD disc player to get a month ago! Geesh you'd think this could easier and if it does not get easier and products are compliant with each other then how do these company's think this technology will ever succeed?

If this HD technology really worked you would think you could go out and buy a HDTV and a HD disc player and plug the 2 together and watch TV....BUT...NO....this player will not do this and that player will not do that and this TV only accept such n' such FPS, and that TV will not work with this player and this player will not play that and the other player will not convert this...it is all just a freakin' mess!

If anyone cares or could make a suggestion based on the equipment I have please do so:
Sim2 HT300 elink 720p projector
Da-Lite 116" screen
McIntosh MX135 a/v pre-pro
McIntosh MC2007 amps
Denon 5900 dvd player
D* HD/Tivo receiver

I want to be able to play HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs at the best possible picture that my Sim2 project will output. In the near future I will upgrade to a 1080P projector.

The only player that plays both BluRay and HD-DVD is the LG but it is missing lots of features on the HD-DVD side.

My suggestion, wait another 6-12 months.

No, it does BD interactivity just fine, but it struggles with the HDi menus and other interactivity that HD DVD has such as IME or U-Control.

Does your McIntosh pre/pro have HDMI inputs for audio? If not, you'll need player(s) that output multichannel audio via analog connections (RCA jacks). The first-gen Toshiba HD DVD players did this, but only the higher-end Toshiba's second-gen player (players?) does. The PS3 doesn't have multichannel analog outs even with a dongle, so you would need to get a standalone Blu-ray player that has analog outs.

Basically, high-definition disc formats will eventually drive you to upgrade your audio electronics just to get a multichannel digital connection between player and pre-amp/amp -- my least favorite "feature" of the high-def upgrade path.

There are currently NO BLU-RAY players that do BD interactivity just fine. PS3 is expected to be upgradable to whatever newest BD interactivity profile, but every current standalone BD players are crippled in this respect.

Price is not an issue Pany+ AX2
Price is a bit of an issue Sony+ AX2
Price is more of an issue PS3 + AX2
Price is more of an issue PS3 + A1 (+A2 if you can’t find A1)
Price is more of an issue but you have a 360 PS3 + add-on
Pric3e is more of an issue PS3 now and wait 6 months to see if HD DVD player is needed
