We are considering adding multichannel audio support (for video files) to PS3 Video 9 but we'd like to confirm that the PS3 can indeed support multichannel AAC 5.1 audio before doing so.
We do not have a HDMI/LPCM setup so we are hoping someone in the AVS Forum community can play a test file for us on their PS3 and see if they get discrete audio in their setup.
Since we're a new user we can't post the URL to the file directly. If your interested in helping out, please shoot us a PM and hopefully you can post the URL of the file to this thread for us.
If you have trouble playing the file on your PS3, please let us know what version you are using, since it works fine on our v1.10 PS3.

Well we hit the 5 post mark so we will give it another shot.
If you have the following setup which can play LPCM:
PS3 ----(HDMI)---> A/V Receiver -----> Speakers
And have 3 minutes to spare, could you please try playing back this file on your PS3:

and let us know if you get discrete 5.1 sound?

Did anyone try this yet? I don't have a receiver with HDMI, but if I could get 5.1 surrond sound from my MPEG 2 and MPEG 4 files through HDMI, I might look to upgrade sooner rather than later.
Downloaded it to my thumb drive..I'll give it a shot tonight when I get home. See if it works..and better yet how it sounds :D Mcallister..Cincinnati here..howdy Neighbor..

I'll also give it a try when I get home today (~3hrs).
My setup for it - PS3->Pioneer Elite 81txv->Paradigm 7.1 using HDMI of course.
I would love to see discrete sound from MP4's.... even if it means converting my 175ish AVI's for a third time (lost them in a hdd crash after the first :( )
I'll report back later.

After playing it a few different times with various settings I found it was only using 2 channels. Center was a blend of L+R and the surrounds went to L+R as well.

To videora:
If it's not too much work, put the 5.1-7.1 AAC capability on your program anyway. Clearly it's not that the file doesn't work but the PS3 firmware doesn't want to decode it that way. Maybe a future firmware will do it. Regardless of the PS3, having the feature as part of the software makes it a great conversion software for PC/MAC playback anyway.
Now if you guys could figure out how to change the .MKV container with H.264 video to an .MP4 container. That would be cool.
